South Africa launches ETA: who can use it now

South Africa officially launched its Electronic Travel Authorisation on August 12, 2026. The ETA moves an eligible short-stay application online: register, verify a phone number and email, scan the passport, take a live selfie, submit the trip details and receive the outcome electronically.

The system is already substantial. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber said the pilot processed 216,204 applications and identified 6,126 fraudulent applications. He also said an approved traveler should receive the ETA within 24 hours and can store it in a phone wallet.

The launch is not a blanket new rule for every passport or every South African airport. The current application portal does not publish a complete nationality list, and its airport list differs from the launch speech. A traveler should confirm both before applying or booking around the ETA lane.

The traveler decision: use only South Africa's official ETA portal. Confirm that your passport and arrival airport are eligible, apply with enough time for a delay, and keep the approval plus the usual border documents offline. A Roaming eSIM can supply data after landing, but it cannot issue an ETA, receive the portal's registration SMS or guarantee admission.

What changed at the August 12 launch

The launch moved the ETA beyond its G20 pilot and into the next phase of South Africa's digital immigration program. President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed the launch and the four initial source markets: China, India, Indonesia and Mexico.

The minister said countries will be added systematically over the coming weeks and their embassies will be informed. The next phase is intended to make the ETA compulsory for short visits from visa-required countries once they are added. Visa-exempt travelers have not received a blanket new mandatory ETA requirement; the official FAQ says they may continue through standard immigration procedures, while voluntary ETA access is part of the rollout.

This distinction matters. A formal national launch does not mean any passport holder can select any airport today. The application portal and the traveler's embassy remain the practical checks until Home Affairs publishes a complete, current eligibility list.

The live portal lists three airports, not four

The current ETA portal and its official FAQ list three supported arrival airports:

• OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg;
• Cape Town International Airport;
• Lanseria International Airport.

The August 12 ministerial speech also named King Shaka International Airport in Durban. The live application surface does not yet include King Shaka in its public list.

For an application being submitted now, follow the live portal. Do not assume a King Shaka arrival is supported solely because it appeared in the launch address. Ask Home Affairs or the relevant embassy to confirm if the portal has not changed by the booking date.

Land and sea ports are not part of the current public list. The minister said those ports will be added over the coming months as facial verification and the upgraded movement-control system are deployed.

How the South Africa ETA application works

The minister's launch address and the live portal describe this sequence:

1. Create a profile at eta.dha.gov.za.
2. Verify both the mobile number and email address with one-time codes.
3. Photograph the ordinary passport that will be used for the trip.
4. Take a live selfie so the system can compare the face with the passport image.
5. Add personal and travel information, including the intended port of entry.
6. Pay the amount shown when a fee applies.
7. Submit and wait for the result by email and in the ETA profile.

An approved ETA is linked to the passport. Take the same passport to the airport. A name change, replacement passport or emergency document should not be treated as interchangeable with the document used in the application.

The official FAQ sets a stricter passport check than many travelers expect. It says the passport must be valid for at least seven months from the intended travel or employment start date and at least 30 days beyond the visa expiry, including a renewal. It must be machine-readable, undamaged and clear enough for the system to scan its photograph and identity fields.

Plan for the phone and email verification before travel

The registration OTP is part of the identity process, not an arrival-data feature. Use a mobile number that can receive the code while the application is being created, keep access to the email account and complete the profile on a stable connection.

Tourism Update reported problems receiving the SMS code on some +86 numbers after an August system update. The same report described delayed Indian applications and airport booths that were sometimes offline, while another operator reported approvals in four to six hours with no technical problem. These are pilot experiences, not proof that every applicant will succeed or fail in the same way.

Do not pay an unofficial intermediary to provide a different phone number or to promise a faster result. If the code fails, retry through the official portal and use the official support or embassy route. Keep screenshots of the application reference and any error, but do not share passport images or login codes in a public forum.

A data-only Roaming eSIM does not solve the registration step because it does not provide the applicant's ordinary SMS number. Keep the home line available for the OTP and bank verification needed before departure. After approval, save a local copy of the outcome, passport details, accommodation and onward ticket instead of assuming the wallet or email will always load at the border.

The 24-hour processing time is not a promise

The official FAQ says most applications are processed automatically and applicants typically receive an outcome within 24 hours. The launch speech uses the same 24-hour figure.

"Typically" matters. A passport scan can fail, automated checks can refer a case for more work, an OTP can be delayed and support may not resolve a problem before a flight. The pilot report cited above includes both four-to-six-hour approvals and cases that ran beyond the expected window.

Apply before the final 24 hours and avoid non-refundable commitments when a visa or ETA is still required for the trip. An airline may need to verify the authority to travel before boarding, and an application cannot be turned into an on-arrival approval simply because a flight is departing.

The R500 processing fee is still a proposal

South Africa published draft fee regulations on July 27. They propose an R500 electronic-processing charge for each online visa or permit application. A traveler from a visa-required country who is not exempt from the ordinary port-of-entry visa fee could also pay the existing R425 visa charge under the draft table.

Public comments closed on August 11, and the draft names August 17 as its intended start. No final regulation was found in the government search on August 13. The R500 amount and start date should therefore not be presented as settled law yet.

Use the fee shown by the official portal for the actual passport and application. The live FAQ says all fees paid through the ETA process are non-refundable regardless of the outcome. Do not use an exchange-rate conversion from an older article as the amount to budget.

What happens at the South African border

An approved traveler presents the passport used for the application and follows the ETA or immigration lane at a supported airport. The minister said a camera checks the arriving traveler against the approved identity record. Dedicated ETA counters are operating, but the launch address also says further work is needed to connect the system to airport eGates. Do not assume the entire arrival is already an unattended eGate process.

Home Affairs may ask for:

• the valid passport;
• the ETA approval;
• a return or onward ticket;
• proof of accommodation;
• proof of sufficient funds;
• an invitation letter for an applicable work route;
• a yellow-fever certificate when required by the travel history.

The ETA is permission to travel and report to a port of entry. It is not a guarantee of admission. The immigration officer decides whether the entry conditions are met and how long the visitor may stay.

Where Roaming eSIM helps after landing

Ten questions travelers ask about the South Africa ETA

1. Do I need a South Africa ETA if my passport is visa exempt?

Not as a blanket rule from the August 12 launch. The official FAQ says a visa-exempt traveler may still use standard immigration procedures. Voluntary ETA access is being expanded, so confirm the rule for the passport before travel.

2. Which passport holders can apply now?

The government explicitly names China, India, Indonesia and Mexico as the four markets already used in the pilot. It is adding countries in phases but has not published a complete current list on the public FAQ. Check the portal and the relevant South African embassy.

3. Which airports currently accept the ETA?

The live portal lists OR Tambo, Cape Town and Lanseria. A traveler using another airport, land border or seaport should follow the existing visa or entry route until the official portal adds that port.

4. Can I use the ETA at King Shaka International Airport?

The minister named King Shaka in the launch address, but the live portal omits it. Treat it as unconfirmed for a new application until the portal or Home Affairs supports the actual itinerary.

5. How early should I apply?

The official figure is typically within 24 hours, not a guaranteed maximum. Apply earlier than the final day and leave time to resolve an OTP, passport scan, payment or manual-review problem.

6. How much does the South Africa ETA cost?

Pay the amount shown on the official application for the passport and category. The R500 online-processing charge is still a draft as of August 13, and the live FAQ says paid fees are non-refundable.

7. Can I submit an ETA for a child?

The FAQ says minors require an ETA but that minor applications will arrive in a future phase. A family should ask Home Affairs or the embassy for the correct current route instead of placing a child on an adult application.

8. Does the ETA allow short-term work?

Not by itself. The official FAQ says work requires an invitation from a registered entity and the Section 11(2) visitor-visa process. Tourism permission should not be used as work authorization.

9. What should I do if the mobile or email OTP does not arrive?

Retry through the official portal, confirm the country code and contact the official support or embassy route. Do not give an intermediary the passport or login codes. A Roaming eSIM is data-only and cannot receive this registration SMS for you.

10. Does an approved ETA guarantee boarding or entry?

No. The airline may verify the authority to travel, and a South African immigration officer makes the final admission decision. Carry the passport used for the application and the supporting trip documents.
