SPIEL Essen runs October 22-25, 2026, at Messe Essen. Saturday, October 24, is sold out, and there is no on-site ticket office. If you have not booked, check another day in the official shop before committing to travel. If you already have a ticket stored in the SPIEL app, check that it displays the correct visit date.

The organizer's latest Saturday notice confirms there are no remaining Saturday tickets. A separate app correction asks visitors to remove previously stored tickets from the app and scan them again. These are two different issues: one affects buying a visit; the other affects preparing a ticket you already own.

SPIEL is a board-game fair where you can try games, talk to publishers and buy releases or accessories. A good first visit needs a short list of games, not a plan to inspect every stand. Decide which matters most: playing demos, collecting preorders or browsing.

Choose a visit day before booking transport

Buy through the shop linked from the official ticket and opening-hours page. Admission is sold online only. The organizer points visitors toward Thursday, Friday and Sunday after Saturday's sellout; check actual availability at checkout rather than assuming those dates remain available.

DayPublic opening hoursPlanning note
Thursday, October 2210:00-19:00Check your preferred demo or collection arrangements
Friday, October 2310:00-19:00Confirm ticket availability before booking a journey
Saturday, October 2410:00-19:00Sold out when checked October 4
Sunday, October 2510:00-18:00One hour shorter; leave time to collect bags and purchases

Do not buy a train or flight on the assumption that a ticket will turn up at the door. Use the official seller, not a stranger offering a supposed unused QR code. For any legitimate transfer question, ask the organizer about its conditions before sharing personal documents.

Sunday is not a promise of empty aisles, discounted games or remaining stock. If there is one release you would travel specifically to buy, ask its publisher whether reservations, collection windows and your preferred language edition are available.

What SPIEL tickets cost

The official page lists a regular day ticket at EUR25, a child ticket for ages 4-12 at EUR16, and a family day ticket at EUR67 for up to two adults and three children aged 4-12. Children under four enter free. Prices were checked on October 4; confirm the selected ticket's conditions and final total in the shop.

Calculate your group's cost rather than choosing the family product by name. Two adults and one child cost EUR66 as separate regular and child tickets, compared with EUR67 for the family ticket. Two adults and two children cost EUR82 separately, making that same family ticket EUR15 less. These calculations assume regular adult tickets, not a concession.

For a longer trip, purchase admission for each day you intend to attend and check all dates before paying. Do not confuse a separately sold evening show or activity with admission to the exhibition halls.

Check the date on tickets stored in the SPIEL app

The organizer's app-ticket correction says a glitch hid the booked visit day on tickets already stored in the app. Its instructions are:

  1. Keep your original ticket and purchase confirmation available.
  2. Remove the previously stored ticket from the app, then scan it back in.
  3. Check that the displayed date matches your booking.

This means removing the app's stored copy, not cancelling or buying the ticket again. If the date still looks wrong, contact ticket support with your original order information rather than trying to repair it at the entrance.

The same notice says children's tickets and Werewolf Night tickets bought for other people currently cannot be stored. Service partners have promised a solution by October 12; that is a stated target, not confirmation that the fix has happened. Keep the original supported ticket format and recheck the notice after that date.

Plan demos and purchases around the current hall map

The 2026 hall plans cover eight halls and the Galeria. Use them with the official SPIEL app, whose 2026 update includes exhibitor and new-release lists, interactive maps and favorites. A publisher's stand number from last year's guide may no longer be useful.

Build two short lists before you arrive:

  • Games to try: choose a few priorities, check the language of the demonstration and ask whether booking is needed.
  • Games to buy or collect: confirm the edition, price, pickup day, deadline and what proof the publisher needs.

A preorder does not automatically book a demo, and an interesting listing does not establish that stock will last until Sunday. Ask the individual publisher. The same applies to accessories and older titles: check the exhibitor's offering rather than expecting every retailer's full range.

Group nearby stands together and leave gaps between timed activities. If a table is full, have another nearby demo in mind instead of spending the whole morning in one queue. Write down a hall and stand number as well as the game name so you can find it again.

Getting to Messe Essen by U11 or car

The organizer's travel page directs rail visitors from Essen Hauptbahnhof onto U11. Choose the stop for the entrance you intend to use:

EntranceUseful U11 stop
East, by Hall 8Messe Ost/Gruga
West or SouthMesse West-Süd/Gruga

Do not treat the short U-Bahn ride as your complete arrival time. Allow for finding the platform, the walk, queues and any stop or lift changes. Use Ruhrbahn's ZÄPP app for journey planning, service notices and tickets. It also reports lift and escalator disruptions, which matters when carrying luggage or using a wheelchair.

Check the outward and return journeys for your actual date. If staying elsewhere in the Ruhr area or arriving via Düsseldorf Airport, compare the whole connection to Essen and then the fair. Do not recycle a 2025 construction notice as this year's timetable.

For drivers, the organizer lists visitor parking at P2 and P10, with shuttle connections. Use its current approach instructions and check parking availability; finding a space, taking the shuttle and returning to your car all add time. Save the parking location before entering the fair.

Bags, purchases and shipping games home

Bring a bag you can carry without blocking people at demo tables. Under the fair's rules, very large board-game backpacks must not be worn on the back; handle them as instructed. That is not a blanket ban on ordinary backpacks.

The storage and shipping page lists bag storage at the end of the Galeria by Hall 3. The charge is EUR3 per bag, with EUR2 for each additional access; payment there is card-only. If you repeatedly return to add purchases, include those extra charges in your plan.

Mail Boxes Etc. is listed in Hall 8, stand 8A110 for shipping. Ask for a quote for your actual destination and parcel. The published terms use the higher of physical and volumetric weight, and some international prices exclude VAT. Each deposit is a separate shipment, so do not assume purchases from several days can be combined later.

Compare shipping with your airline's actual extra-baggage charge before buying a stack of large boxes. Keep receipts, protect purchases from rain and leave enough time before closing to retrieve stored items. A game available from a retailer at home may be easier to buy there; use the fair for the demo if that is the better decision.

Food, breaks, children and access needs

The visitor FAQ allows visitors to bring food and drinks. Bring something you can eat between demos and plan a proper break rather than filling every hour with appointments. Different exhibitors accept different payment methods; carry a working card and a modest cash backup. The bag-storage counter's card-only rule does not mean every stand is cashless.

Locate toilets and a meeting point on the map when you arrive. Do not assume that a crowded demo area will provide a quiet seat whenever you need one. Ask staff about a suitable place to rest, and avoid stopping in an aisle. If leaving and returning the same day, ask for the required reentry wristband before going out.

With children, choose games and demos suited to their ages and attention spans. Keep one or two priorities, leave room for food and toilets, and make the afternoon optional. Our Germany with kids guide can help plan the rest of the trip.

The accessible-arrival guidance identifies ground-level entrances, an elevator at Messe Ost/Gruga, and a ramp route from Messe West-Süd/Gruga. Wheelchairs can be borrowed with a EUR50 deposit and ID, with advance contact recommended. Confirm the arrangements you need and check current lift notices; an accessible entrance does not guarantee that every busy aisle or journey will meet your needs.

Add an evening only after checking the journey back

The Werewolves of Millers Hollow night takes place at the adjacent Grugahalle on Thursday, October 22. Doors are listed for 18:30, the show for 19:30, with an approximate finish at 22:00. It is a separately ticketed audience event, not a seat in the game, and can be booked independently of a fair ticket.

Check the show's language, inventory and return transport before adding it. An evening listing is not evidence that your last train will run late enough. If your accommodation needs an onward connection from Essen, save a usable alternative before entering the hall.

Keep tickets and your meeting plan available without Wi-Fi

The organizer provides free visitor Wi-Fi in the East, South and West entrance foyers, not in the exhibition halls. Do not make that foyer connection your only way to retrieve a ticket, contact your group or check a changed pickup arrangement.

Save your original tickets, publisher confirmations, accommodation address and a map before departure. Test which app screens still work offline. Bring a charged power bank and agree on a precise meeting place if messages stop getting through.

For visitors whose home plan charges extra in Germany, OpenSim's Germany plans offer a separate allowance at a stated price. The public catalog checked October 4 listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76, both eligible for top-up. Check the final checkout total, including any fees or currency conversion.

That can be a better fit than relying only on foyer Wi-Fi when you need train notices or group messages while moving around. If your home plan already includes enough Germany data, using it may be simpler. OpenSim cannot guarantee reception in a crowded hall, recover a sold-out ticket or replace offline preparation.

Check whether your phone supports eSIM, review when to install before travel, and use the travel data calculator before choosing an allowance.

When to recheck your SPIEL plans

The linked organizer, transport and product information was checked on October 4, 2026. Recheck the app correction after October 12, ticket inventory before booking travel, and the hall map and transport notices before visiting. We will update this guide for material changes to tickets, the app, entrances or visitor travel. These dates and arrangements apply to the 2026 fair; confirm a later edition separately.
