Sydney ferry disruptions 2026: fares and alternatives

Sydney Ferries may face cancellations, delays and route changes until Tuesday, October 6, 2026. The public network is still expected to operate, but protected industrial action can alter individual sailings at short notice.

There is also a direct conflict over fares. The Maritime Union of Australia says its members will not sell, collect or validate fares from September 11 to October 6. Transport for NSW says Opal readers remain active and passengers must continue to tap on and tap off. Visitors should follow the Transport for NSW instruction: carry a valid Opal card or contactless payment method and tap whenever a reader is available.

Sydney ferry disruption dates and fare rules

The fare disagreement is the part most likely to confuse a visitor. Union statements describe fare-free travel because members will not handle fare validation. Transport for NSW says normal fares still apply, readers remain active and passengers must tap. Transdev gave the same instruction when it cancelled F3 services on September 12 and 13.

An open gate is not the same as a published fare waiver. Do not decide based on a social post, an unattended wharf or what happened on a previous day. Tap when the reader works. If the equipment is unavailable, follow signs and staff instructions at that wharf.

Which Sydney ferry routes may be affected?

Transport for NSW places all ten public Sydney Ferries routes inside the affected network:

The network notice does not say every sailing will be cancelled. It says disruption may occur across the network. A normal-looking timetable viewed in the morning is not a promise that an afternoon service will run unchanged.

Is the Manly ferry running during the strike?

F1 Manly remains part of the Sydney Ferries network and is expected to run unless a live alert says otherwise. Overtime bans have already affected Manly services, so check the specific departure in the Transport for NSW Trip Planner just before going to Circular Quay or Manly Wharf.

Do not confuse F1 with Manly Fast Ferry. The fast ferry is listed separately as a private service. It has its own timetable and fare conditions, and a public Sydney Ferries industrial-action notice should not be extended to that operator.

If F1 is cancelled and the private ferry does not suit, route 170X links Wynyard and Manly. Road traffic can make the bus slower than the harbour crossing, so compare the live arrival time rather than choosing by scheduled journey time alone.

What to do if a Taronga Zoo or Watsons Bay ferry is cancelled

Taronga Zoo and Watsons Bay both have road access. For the zoo, Transport for NSW's planner currently returns journeys using Route 100 when ferries are excluded. For Watsons Bay, Routes 324 and 325 serve the city corridor.

That does not mean every visitor should memorize a bus number. Stops, directions and connections can change with road work or another disruption. Enter the exact attraction entrance and departure time in the official planner, exclude ferries, and save the result before leaving Wi-Fi.

For a timed zoo entry, add a separate buffer beyond the app's estimate. If the ferry is part of the experience rather than essential transport, move the harbour trip to another day instead of forcing a difficult connection.

Parramatta and Cockatoo Island need different decisions

Parramatta has a rail alternative from central Sydney. It is often the simpler choice when F3 is uncertain. September also has planned low-tide bus replacements between Parramatta and Rydalmere, so an F3 change is not necessarily caused by the industrial action. Cockatoo Island is different. The public F8 ferry is the normal transport connection and the island does not have a visitor road link. If the sailing is cancelled, a bus cannot complete the trip. Keep the booking and return sailing flexible, check the final service before boarding, and do not schedule the island immediately before a flight or cruise departure.

A safer plan for flights, cruises and fixed bookings

Do not use an uncertain ferry as the only link to a hard deadline. That applies to airport trains, cruise check-in, theatre tickets, tours and restaurant reservations with a cancellation charge.

Use this sequence:

1. Build the preferred ferry journey in the official planner.
2. Build a second journey with ferry mode excluded.
3. Save both routes, the destination address and any booking reference offline.
4. Check the ferry alert before leaving the accommodation and again before walking onto the wharf.
5. Switch to the land route as soon as the remaining margin becomes uncomfortable.

Circular Quay serves trains and light rail as well as ferries. A cancellation there does not leave every traveler stranded, but moving through a busy interchange with luggage takes time. Accessibility during Sydney ferry disruptions

Transport for NSW says all Sydney Ferries vessels can carry essential mobility aids, but some older wharves have steps. Tide conditions can also change ramp gradients at Circular Quay, Cremorne Point and Neutral Bay.

Use the wheelchair symbol in the official Trip Planner and check the wharf, replacement vehicle and connecting stop as separate parts of the journey. Staff can help with the gangway and direct passengers to accessible facilities, but they cannot lift a mobility aid or provide personal care. A private ferry needs its own accessibility check.

Every Sydney ferry has a toilet, including at least one wheelchair-accessible toilet. That onboard provision does not settle whether the starting and arrival wharves are independently accessible, so verify both ends.
