Charleroi Airport strike September 2026: flights and rights

Air traffic controllers at Brussels South Charleroi Airport began nightly strike action on September 16, 2026. Government travel notices place the announced window at 22:00 to 08:00 each night through October 10, unless the dispute is suspended or settled earlier. The airport's September 19 update lists 64 cancelled arrivals and departures across Saturday afternoon and evening, Sunday morning, and Sunday afternoon and evening. The airport warns that those figures can still change.
What to do now: Check the operating airline before leaving for CRL. If it confirms a cancellation, do not travel to the airport. Choose between the airline's refund and rerouting options before buying a replacement ticket, and keep receipts for reasonable meals, accommodation and transport when the airline should provide care but does not.
This guide was checked after the airport's 19:30 update on September 19. The strike notice can change, and a flight outside the overnight window can still be affected by an aircraft or crew that did not reach Charleroi the night before.
Charleroi Airport strike status at a glance
| Question | Current answer after the September 19 update |
|---|---|
| Is Charleroi Airport closed? | No. The airport is operating, but named arrivals and departures have been cancelled. |
| When is the strike action planned? | Nightly from 22:00 to 08:00, September 16 through October 10. |
| How many flights are currently cancelled? | The airport's 19:30 update lists 26 Saturday afternoon and evening movements, 12 Sunday morning movements, and 26 Sunday afternoon and evening movements as cancelled. The figures can change. |
| Which flights face the clearest risk? | Late arrivals, late departures and the first morning departures. Knock-on changes can continue later in the day. |
| Should passengers go to the airport? | Only if the operating airline still shows the flight as running. The airport says not to travel when the airline confirms cancellation. |
| Who handles a refund or rerouting? | The operating airline or, where applicable, the tour operator that controls the booking. |
The airport's live notice is the best source for the overall situation. The airline controls the individual booking, replacement flight and refund. Do not use the 64 current cancellations as a forecast for every later date in the action window.
Why an early flight can fail after the strike window ends
The action is scheduled overnight, but an airline network does not reset at 08:00. A late aircraft may be unable to arrive at Charleroi, leaving it unavailable for the first departure the next morning. Crew hours, ground handling and later rotations can then change as the airline rebuilds the schedule.
Use the flight number, date and operating carrier when checking status. A route running normally today does not prove that tomorrow's flight will operate. Equally, the 832 exposed movements reported for the full period are not 832 confirmed cancellations.
| Scheduled departure or arrival | Practical risk to plan for |
|---|---|
| 22:00 to 08:00 | Direct exposure to the announced action window |
| First morning departure | Aircraft may not have returned to Charleroi overnight |
| Daytime flight | Lower direct exposure, but possible knock-on delay, aircraft swap or cancellation |
| Arrival close to 22:00 | A delay may push the flight into the action window or lead to a diversion |
| Separate onward ticket | The second airline may not protect a missed connection |
A decision plan for your Charleroi flight
The airline says the flight is operating
Keep the booking and monitor it in the airline app. Check again before leaving for the airport and before a nonrefundable shuttle or train becomes locked in. Save the boarding pass and booking reference offline.
Do not arrive many extra hours merely because a strike exists. Use the airline's check-in and bag-drop times. Extra time can help with queues, but it cannot make a closed desk open earlier or prevent an air traffic control cancellation.
The airline cancels the flight
Open the cancellation message and compare the three choices before clicking:
- rerouting to the final destination at the earliest opportunity;
- reimbursement if the journey no longer serves its purpose; or
- rerouting at a later date, subject to seat availability.
Accepting a refund can end the airline's obligation to carry you on that ticket. If reaching the destination still matters, ask for rerouting first. Do not buy a speculative replacement and assume it will be reimbursed.
The flight is delayed but not cancelled
Stay within reach of the gate and watch the airline app and airport screens. Ask the airline what care it is providing. For a departure delay of at least five hours, current Belgian guidance says a passenger may choose reimbursement when deciding not to continue.
The flight diverts to another airport
Wait for the airline's confirmed plan. Do not assume the diversion airport will be Brussels Airport, Antwerp, Eindhoven or another airport discussed online. The operating airline decides the workable airport based on the aircraft, crew, airspace and its network.
If the airline carries passengers by coach to Charleroi or another agreed destination, save that instruction. If you arrange your own transport without first checking the airline's plan, reimbursement may be disputed.
What Charleroi passengers can claim after disruption
These terms are often collapsed into one question, but they solve different problems.
| Right | What it covers | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Refund | The unused ticket when you choose not to continue | Choosing it can end the duty to reroute you |
| Rerouting | Travel to the final destination under comparable conditions | Ask the airline before buying your own replacement |
| Care | Reasonable meals, refreshments, hotel and hotel transport when required | It can apply even when the cause is outside the airline's control |
| Cash compensation | A separate fixed payment under qualifying conditions | It is not automatic for an air traffic control strike |
Belgium's Civil Aviation Authority lists air traffic control strikes outside an airline's control as an example of an extraordinary circumstance. That can remove cash compensation when the airline proves the connection and shows the disruption could not have been avoided through reasonable measures. It does not erase the choice between refund and rerouting, or the duty of care while waiting.
Keep the original itinerary, cancellation message, reason given by the airline, replacement offer and itemized receipts. Expenses should be necessary and reasonable. Contact the airline first. If it rejects the complaint, does not answer or gives an unsatisfactory response, the Belgian authority provides an escalation route for eligible cases.
Late arrivals and early departures need a ground-transport backup
Charleroi Airport is not beside central Brussels. Its official access page lists Flibco shuttles to Brussels-Midi and other cities, plus the A1 bus between the airport and Charleroi-Central station. The A1 is published as operating from 04:30 to 23:30, but timetables can change during disruption.
The airport has no rail station inside the terminal. A rail journey involves a bus transfer. For the current route, use the airport page and a live SNCB or TEC planner rather than an old blog post or screenshot.
| Situation | Plan before travel |
|---|---|
| Arrival near the last shuttle | Check the actual flight and shuttle time, then identify a licensed taxi fallback |
| First flight of the morning | Confirm the first A1 or shuttle reaches the terminal before the airline's deadline |
| Delayed arrival | Recheck the booked shuttle before landing and save its change terms |
| Diversion | Wait for the airline's transfer instruction before abandoning its arranged transport |
| Overnight stay required | Ask the airline about hotel and transport care before self-booking |
Flibco's FAQ says travelers should allow at least one hour after a flight lands before a shuttle. Its Door2Gate service waits five minutes after the booked pickup time; the company describes a voucher process for a missed Door2Gate booking caused by a documented flight delay. Check the terms for the exact product purchased, because a regular coach and Door2Gate are not the same service.
Protected connections and separate tickets
A connection on one reservation gives the operating airline a clearer responsibility for the booked final destination. Separate tickets create a self-transfer. If the Charleroi flight fails, the second airline may treat the traveler as a no-show even when the first cancellation was caused by the strike.
For a separate ticket:
- add enough time to recover checked baggage and travel between airports;
- check whether changing the second ticket now costs less than losing it later;
- tell the next airline before its check-in deadline if the first flight fails;
- keep the travel-insurance policy and emergency number offline; and
- do not describe two reservations as a protected connection when asking for help.
A Brussels Airport itinerary and a Charleroi itinerary are not the same airport. Check the code: CRL is Brussels South Charleroi, while BRU is Brussels Airport.
What to save before leaving home
- The airline app with the booking added and notifications enabled.
- The CRL Airport app or airport flight-status page.
- The boarding pass, booking reference and cancellation message as screenshots.
- The last useful shuttle and train combination for the arrival time.
- The accommodation address and late check-in contact.
- A map of Charleroi, Brussels and any diversion airport saved offline.
- The travel insurer's disruption number and policy reference.
- A payment method that does not depend on receiving a text on the travel data line.
Keep medicines, keys, chargers and one change of clothes in cabin baggage when the airline's allowance permits. A same-day reroute can separate a traveler from checked luggage.
Mobile data for a changed Belgium itinerary
A Belgium Roaming eSIM can keep airline notifications, maps, SNCB, TEC and shuttle messages available on a compatible unlocked phone. That is its useful edge during this disruption: the live product page shows plan-level allowance, validity, network information and top-up status before checkout, while Roaming eSIM provides a published 24/7 support route. An airport Wi-Fi login does not provide the same continuity after a diversion or on the road to Brussels.
The public catalog returned 15 Belgium plans on September 19. Published country-plan coverage included Base and Orange on 4G and Proximus on 5G. Actual service still depends on the selected plan, phone, location, local network and congestion. Not every plan is reloadable, so use the current card as the source of truth.
Choose the Belgium page for a Belgium-only trip. Compare a Europe Roaming eSIM when the planned route or a realistic reroute crosses into another listed country. A regional label does not prove that every country is included, so open the selected coverage list before purchase.
Roaming eSIM does not prevent a cancellation, guarantee an airport signal or replace offline copies. Use the installation timing guide, phone compatibility guide and travel data calculator before departure.
Ten questions travelers are asking about the Charleroi strike
Is Charleroi Airport closed because of the strike?
No. The airport is operating, but airlines have cancelled named flights. Check the operating airline for your flight rather than treating the airport as fully open or fully closed.
When will the Charleroi Airport strike end?
The announced nightly action runs through October 10, 2026, but it could be suspended or settled earlier. Check the airport and airline again on the day of travel.
Which Charleroi flights are most likely to be cancelled?
Flights scheduled between 22:00 and 08:00 have the clearest direct exposure. Late arrivals and first morning departures also face aircraft-positioning risk. Only the airline can confirm a specific cancellation.
Should I go to the airport if my Ryanair flight is cancelled?
No. Charleroi Airport says passengers should not travel when their airline confirms cancellation. Use the airline message to choose refund, rerouting or a later date.
Can a flight arriving just before 22:00 be diverted?
It can be delayed or diverted if it cannot use Charleroi before the action window, but the outcome is flight-specific. Do not choose your own diversion airport based on speculation.
Will Ryanair pay for a hotel after a strike cancellation?
Current Belgian guidance says the airline's duty of care can include accommodation and transport when an overnight stay becomes necessary, even during extraordinary circumstances. Ask the airline first and retain reasonable receipts if care is not provided.
Am I owed cash compensation for a Charleroi strike cancellation?
Not automatically. An external air traffic control strike may qualify as an extraordinary circumstance. Refund, rerouting and care are separate rights and can still apply.
What happens if I miss the last shuttle to Brussels?
Check the shuttle's delay terms and ask the airline about its plan if the flight was diverted or heavily delayed. Identify a licensed taxi or overnight option before landing, but do not assume every self-arranged cost will be reimbursed.
Does Charleroi Airport have a train station?
No. The airport's public-transport route uses a bus connection, including the A1 link to Charleroi-Central, followed by rail where needed.
Should I buy another flight before the airline cancels mine?
Usually not without understanding both tickets. A backup can become an unrecoverable extra cost. When cancellation is confirmed, compare the airline's earliest rerouting with the refund before paying for another flight.
Verified Charleroi sources and update triggers
The cancellation count and passenger instructions come from Brussels South Charleroi Airport's September 19 update. The announced nightly period is corroborated by current government travel notices. Refund, rerouting, care, compensation and complaint guidance comes from Belgium's Civil Aviation Authority and the EU's Your Europe service. Ground-transport details come from the airport, SNCB and Flibco.
We will update this page if the action is suspended, settled or extended; the airport publishes a materially different cancellation count; an airline issues a broad waiver; or the official passenger-rights and transport guidance changes.
