Sydney Marathon 2026 guide: start times, expo and transport

The TCS Sydney Marathon takes place on Sunday, August 30, 2026. Around 40,000 runners are expected to start in North Sydney, cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge and finish at the Sydney Opera House. A visiting runner has three separate journeys to plan: bib collection at Sydney Olympic Park, the assigned North Sydney assembly area before dawn, and a reunion after the Opera House finish.
Every marathon runner must collect their own bib at the Running Show and show government-issued photo ID. Exact start-group instructions are now public. Depending on the bib colour and group number, advertised arrival times run from 5am to 7:05am and public starts run from 6:32am to 8:19am. The organizer says runners who arrive before their assigned time will not be admitted to the assembly area.
Purple and Orange runners should use Victoria Cross or North Sydney, while Green runners should use Crows Nest. Ferries do not start early enough for most runners. Roads, buses and parts of the light rail network will also change, so a normal Sunday route is not a reliable race-day route.
This guide was rechecked on August 23. The dedicated 2026 start-group pages, Running Show page, Transport for NSW event page, assigned bib and final participant email are the sources to use for details that can still change.

Treat race week as three separate journeys
The marathon does not operate from one venue. Plan each trip before arrival:
- Airport or accommodation to the Running Show at Sydney Olympic Park.
- Accommodation to the correct assembly area in North Sydney before dawn.
- Opera House finish to the Reunite Zone, bag collection or accommodation.
This distinction matters because the Running Show is west of central Sydney, the start is north of the harbour and the finish is beside the harbour in the CBD. A hotel that looks close to the finish may still need an early metro or train to the start. A Saturday visit to the Opera House does not collect the bib.
Collect your bib at Sydney Olympic Park
The official Running Show is at Sydney Showground, 1 Showground Road, Sydney Olympic Park. It opens on the following schedule:
| Day | Opening hours |
|---|---|
| Thursday, August 27 | 9am to 8pm |
| Friday, August 28 | 8am to 8pm |
| Saturday, August 29 | 8am to 4pm |
Each marathon participant must collect their own race bib. Bring the government-issued photo ID requested by the organizer. A friend cannot collect it for you, and race-day collection is not advertised. An international flight that lands after 4pm on Saturday creates a real problem, so build the Expo visit into the arrival day or fly in earlier.
The organizer advertises a Marathon Express train between Central and Olympic Park every 30 minutes. Its current estimate is about 23 minutes on Thursday and Friday, but about 40 minutes on Saturday because more trains will be using the tracks. Transport for NSW also lists T7 trains from Lidcombe to Olympic Park about every 10 minutes. Check the current Running Show transport notice before setting out because Saturday trackwork affects several lines.
The Olympic Park ferry wharf is about 3.6km from the Showground. Transport for NSW estimates the walk at around 40 minutes. Bus 526 connects the wharf and precinct, but ferries can fill. The ferry is a scenic option only when the timetable and extra walking suit your day.
The participant travel pass covers eligible public transport during its stated validity window. It does not cover the separate station access fee at Sydney Airport. Save the pass to the phone and keep an offline copy before leaving the terminal.
Match the bib colour and group number to the start time
The generic 6:15am event time is not the reporting time for every runner. Use both the assembly colour and the start-group number printed on the bib. The organizer published these arrival and start windows on its dedicated pages:
| Assembly | Group | Advertised arrival | Enter chute | Advertised start |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| High Performance | HPP | 5:00am | 5:55am | 6:30am |
| High Performance | 1 | 5:00am | Announced at venue | From 6:32am |
| High Performance | 2 | 5:45am | Announced at venue | From 7:05am |
| High Performance | 3 | 6:15am | Announced at venue | From 7:29am |
| High Performance | 4 | 6:45am | Announced at venue | From 7:55am |
| Purple | 1 | 5:00am | 5:45am | From 6:32am |
| Purple | 2 | 5:45am | 6:35am | From 7:05am |
| Purple | 3 | 6:15am | 6:55am | From 7:29am |
| Purple | 4 | 6:45am | 7:25am | From 7:55am |
| Green | 1 | 5:00am | 5:50am | From 6:41am |
| Green | 2 | 5:50am | 6:40am | From 7:11am |
| Green | 3 | 6:25am | 7:00am | From 7:38am |
| Green | 4 | 6:55am | 7:35am | From 8:07am |
| Orange | 1 | 5:00am | 6:00am | From 6:50am |
| Orange | 2 | 6:00am | 6:45am | From 7:17am |
| Orange | 3 | 6:30am | 7:10am | From 7:44am |
| Orange | 4 | 7:05am | 7:45am | From 8:19am |
Check the organizer's current High Performance, Purple, Green or Orange page against the bib. The pages tell runners not to arrive early because access will not open before the advertised arrival time.
Purple, Orange and High Performance runners should approach through Victoria Cross metro or North Sydney train station. Green runners should use Crows Nest metro. Follow event signs from the station rather than walking toward another colour's entrance.
Metro services start early and run about every four minutes until 8am, then every five minutes until 3pm. Extra trains begin from roughly 3am to 4am, depending on the line. Follow the Transport for NSW marathon page and check its live trip planner on Saturday evening.
Ferries do not operate early enough for most runners. A taxi or rideshare can also stop outside a closure or leave passengers on the wrong side of a controlled street. The organizer provides a general drop-off at ANZAC Public School on Anzac Avenue off Ernest Street. Its accessible drop-off is at the North Sydney Boys High School car park on Falcon Street. Public transport remains the more predictable approach.
Do not plan around a car, ferry or normal light rail
Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Cahill Expressway and parts of the Western Distributor are due to close from 3am to 11am. Other restrictions affect Macquarie Street, Oxford Street, Anzac Parade and roads around the finish, with the wider operation running from about 2am to 4:30pm.
The closures change more than driving. Buses are diverted, and parts of the L2 and L3 light rail routes will not operate normally. Transport for NSW says L3 services from Kingsford are not expected to return to their normal route until 2pm. Use the event transport page and Live Traffic NSW instead of relying on a saved weekday route.
Participants can use the included public transport entitlement by carrying the required proof. Friends and spectators need their normal fare unless the organizer explicitly gives them an entitlement. The airport access fee remains separate.
Closest useful stations after the finish include Circular Quay for trains and Martin Place for metro services. Circular Quay will be busy and some walking routes will be controlled. A family should agree on a reunion point before deciding which station to use.
Do not assume there is start-line bag drop
The organizer's current assembly pages include a question about start-line bag drop, but the answer is not exposed in the static page text. That is not enough evidence to publish a 2026 bag service, size, label or deadline.
Use the final participant email, the assigned start-group page and Running Show staff for the current process. If the instructions require a bag to be left at the Running Show, do it during bib collection. Keep passports, wallet, keys, medication and anything irreplaceable out of a checked race bag.
Wear a disposable or reusable warm layer to the start only if the current event rules permit it. North Sydney can feel cool before sunrise even when the day warms later. The official health and safety page should decide hydration and medical preparation. This guide does not replace personal medical advice.
Build a spectator route that works without perfect tracking
The organizer lists seven entertainment zones, but a supporter does not need to chase all seven. Street closures and the runner's pace make a two-point plan more realistic.
Simple option: Macquarie Street twice
The course reaches Macquarie Street around 14km and again near 40.8km. A supporter can see the runner early, remain in the CBD, then watch for the return before walking to the Royal Botanic Garden Reunite Zone. Martin Place metro and St James station are the useful public transport references.
This option avoids a cross-city race against the marathon. The long gap between passes also leaves time for food and toilets. Save the exact viewing side of the road because crossing the course may not be possible when the field is dense.
Two-area option: Barangaroo, then the finish side
Barangaroo is around 10km and has a nearby metro station. After the runner passes, a spectator can use the CBD walking network or metro to move toward Macquarie Street and the Reunite Zone. Allow for controlled crossings and crowds. Do not expect to stand at the Opera House finish line without the access required by the organizer.
The Rocks is another early option around 11.9km. Taylor Square, Moore Park, Centennial Park and Mrs Macquarie's Chair are official party-zone areas, but combining distant points can become a transport exercise rather than a useful day.
Do not hand food, gels or other assistance to a runner unless the event rules allow it. The official rules restrict unauthorized assistance and refreshments. Supporters can cheer and carry the post-race items to the agreed reunion point.
Use the Smart Map as a live aid, not a meeting plan
The organizer's 2026 Smart Map is now live. It is powered by PAM, integrated into TRACX and shows course navigation, road closures, spectator locations, entertainment, food and drink, transport and event activations. Open it before race morning and confirm that the 2026 event is selected.
Runner tracking depends on timing points, app updates, phone power and mobile service. It may show where a runner was rather than where the runner is. Dense crowds can also slow local network performance. A Roaming eSIM uses the local partner networks listed on the selected package; it cannot create extra capacity at a congested cell site.
Set one fixed reunion plan:
- Choose a named letter or landmark in the official Reunite Zone.
- Save a screenshot of it on every phone.
- Agree how long everyone waits before moving.
- Give children or vulnerable travelers a paper contact number and accommodation address.
- Download the CBD map before race morning.
GPS can still locate the phone when the map has been downloaded and mobile data is slow. The fixed point matters more than a stream of messages sent into a crowded network.
Accessibility and assisted participation
The organizer provides a dedicated accessible start area in the Green Assembly, but runners must receive that assignment in advance. The access page also lists accessible toilets at every drink station, a lowered bib desk, quiet spaces and transport for approved medical devices from start to finish.
Check the current access and inclusion page and the official Smart Map before travel. Contact the organizer when a wheelchair route, support person, medical device or quiet space is essential. Do not assume a clear street on a normal day remains step free after race barriers are installed.
Install the useful apps before the Running Show
| App or tool | Marathon-week use | Offline backup |
|---|---|---|
| Official Smart Map and TRACX | Course, closures, party zones, transport and runner estimates | Course screenshot and fixed reunion point |
| Transport for NSW Trip Planner or Opal Travel | Olympic Park, assembly station and post-finish route | Station names and saved journey steps |
| Live Traffic NSW | Closures, clearways and driving changes | Plan to avoid driving near the course |
| BOM Weather | Forecast, radar and warnings | Clothing plan based on the latest forecast |
| Offline map | Airport, Olympic Park, start, finish and accommodation | Marked hotel and Reunite Zone |
Install and sign in while the accommodation Wi-Fi is available. Save the bib, travel pass, photo ID reminder, station route and emergency contacts as local files. A screenshot is often faster than finding an email in a station crowd.
For the flight to Australia, keep any power bank in carry-on baggage and check the operating airline's current limit. The power bank guide and Wh calculator explains the calculation, but the airline makes the final carriage decision.
Mobile data for the Sydney trip
Mobile data is useful from the airport onward: Olympic Park directions, the participant email, transport changes, weather, tracking, family messages and the route back from the finish. It does not replace the offline map, guarantee service in a crowd or change an event rule.
The public Roaming eSIM package endpoint was rechecked on August 23, 2026. It returned 34 Australia plans: 16 fixed-data options and 18 daily-allowance options. Thirty-two were marked as supporting top-up. Current records listed Optus, Vodafone or both, with network labels up to 5G depending on the package. Price, partner network, daily allowance, reduced-speed continuation, activation and reloadability remain package-specific, so review the selected card before payment.
An event report can publish a start time or road closure. It cannot arrange the visitor's airport data, manage usage for the rest of the Australia trip or provide product support. With a compatible unlocked phone, a traveler can buy a Roaming eSIM plan before landing, keep the usual SIM in the phone, monitor the plan in the app and use the published 24/7 and WhatsApp support channels when help is needed.
That is the useful edge, not a promise of better race-day radio capacity. Roaming eSIM plans connect through the local partners shown on each package. Keep the official maps and reunion plan offline even when the phone has working data.
Use the Australia Roaming eSIM page for an Australia-only visit. The cards below also include regional choices for a trip continuing to New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States. Check each live coverage list before buying because a regional name is not a substitute for the included-country list.
The travel data calculator can estimate a trip-size allowance. Also check whether the phone supports Roaming eSIM and when to install it before travel. Runners staying for the previous weekend can use the City2Surf 2026 guide for that separate race.
Ten Sydney Marathon 2026 questions answered
Where is the Sydney Marathon Running Show in 2026?
It is at Sydney Showground, 1 Showground Road, Sydney Olympic Park, from Thursday, August 27 through Saturday, August 29. It is not at the Opera House finish or the North Sydney start.
Can somebody else collect my marathon bib?
No. The organizer requires each marathon participant to collect their own bib in person and show government-issued photo ID. There is no advertised race-day collection.
Which station should I use on race morning?
Purple, Orange and High Performance runners should use Victoria Cross or North Sydney. Green runners should use Crows Nest. Follow the assigned bib and start-group page because the arrival time and entrance are specific to the assembly and group number.
How early does Sydney public transport run for the marathon?
Extra trains begin from roughly 3am to 4am, depending on the line, and metro services start early. Transport for NSW says metro trains run about every four minutes until 8am. Check the live planner the night before.
Can I buy or transfer a Sydney Marathon entry?
The official rules prohibit transferring or selling an entry or bib. Use only the registration routes published by the organizer. Do not buy a bib through a social post.
Is there bag drop at the start?
Do not assume there is. The current assembly pages surface the question but do not expose an answer in their static text. Follow the final participant email and confirm the process at the Running Show.
What time does the Sydney Marathon start?
Wheelchair athletes start at 6:15am and the High Performance field starts at 6:30am. Assigned public groups then start from 6:32am through 8:19am. The runner's bib colour and group number determine the advertised arrival and start time.
Where should spectators watch?
Macquarie Street is efficient because the course passes it around 14km and 40.8km. Barangaroo or The Rocks can work for an early view before moving toward the Reunite Zone. Keep the plan to one or two points.
What road and transport changes matter most?
The Harbour Bridge and central roads close early, buses divert, ferries start too late for runners, and parts of the L2 and L3 light rail routes are disrupted. Use the dedicated Transport for NSW event page rather than a normal Sunday timetable.
Which app tracks Sydney Marathon runners?
The organizer points spectators to its PAM Smart Map and TRACX integration. Confirm the 2026 event is loaded, then save the course and reunion point offline even after installing it.
The 48-hour check
On Friday or Saturday, confirm these items from current official sources:
- Bib collected with the correct name and assembly colour. - Final participant email downloaded. - Running Show and race-day transport checked for trackwork or service changes. - Current bag process completed. - Weather and official health guidance reviewed. - Smart Map opened and the 2026 event selected. - Start station and Reunite Zone saved offline. - Accommodation address and emergency contacts stored locally. - Australia plan, normal SIM settings and phone battery checked.
Source check and update method
The competitive review covered ten prominent official, government and editorial results. Most pages answer one part of the weekend, such as transport, the Running Show or spectator locations. This guide keeps the useful gap: one sequence connecting bib collection, assigned start time, race-day transport, spectator movement, offline backup and the wider Australia trip.
Operational details can change. Recheck the organizer and Transport for NSW before the Running Show and again on race morning. The bib and final participant email control individual instructions.
