Tesco adds travel eSIM to its International app: what travelers should check

Tesco International now sells prepaid travel eSIM plans inside its Android and iPhone app. The plans are data-only, start from GBP3 according to Tesco's help pages, and earn Clubcard points when the account is linked before purchase.
This is not a Tesco Mobile roaming feature. Tesco markets and processes the purchase, while Sim Local provides the connectivity. The distinction matters when checking coverage, support, refunds and whether an existing Tesco Mobile customer needs another plan at all.
The traveler decision: compare Tesco Mobile's Home From Home coverage first if that is your home network. Otherwise, the Tesco International eSIM is worth checking when its exact in-app plan suits the route and Clubcard points matter. Compare a Roaming eSIM plan when you want to browse destination, regional and Global choices without a Tesco account or loyalty offer.
What Tesco has launched
The Tesco International website now promotes travel eSIM alongside its established international-calling service. Trade analyst CCS Insight reported the app expansion on July 3, 2026. Tesco's own sale terms were last updated in May and its Clubcard promotion began on June 17.
The product is available through the Tesco International app rather than the Tesco grocery app or Tesco Mobile account. Tesco's help center says plans cover more than 150 countries and that some unlimited options are available. The exact destination, local network, allowance, validity and price appear when a traveler chooses a plan.
The terms of sale establish the commercial roles clearly:
- Tesco markets the plans as Sim Local's agent and processes payment;
- Sim Local supplies the underlying mobile service and is responsible for network availability, performance and coverage;
- prices include applicable taxes unless the checkout says otherwise;
- transactions are processed in pounds sterling;
- a plan has no recurring charge unless checkout clearly states one.
That is more useful than treating "Tesco eSIM" as a new mobile network. It is a new retail channel for a partner-supplied travel-data product.
Tesco International eSIM and Tesco Mobile roaming are different
The similar names can send a traveler into the wrong app or lead to an unnecessary purchase.
| Product | Who it is for | What it provides | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesco International travel eSIM | A traveler with a compatible, unlocked phone; a Tesco Mobile contract is not required | A prepaid, partner-supplied data plan bought in the Tesco International app | Destination, allowance, validity, network and phone compatibility |
| Tesco Mobile Home From Home | An eligible Tesco Mobile customer roaming in one of its listed destinations | Use of the customer's UK allowance under Tesco Mobile's current roaming rules | Whether the destination is in Home From Home and whether fair-use or account limits apply |
| Tesco International calling credit | A user of the app's separate international-calling service | App-based calls or calling-card credit | Data or Wi-Fi connection, call rate and Travel Mode |
Tesco Mobile currently lists 48 Home From Home destinations. If your trip and allowance qualify, using the home plan may be simpler than installing a second eSIM. Outside those destinations, compare the carrier's current roaming price with travel eSIM options before departure. Our travel eSIM versus roaming guide explains the cost and setup tradeoffs.
Triple Clubcard points end on August 31
The normal product proposition includes Clubcard points. A separate first-party promotion currently awards triple Clubcard points on travel eSIM and eSIM add-on purchases made in the Tesco International app from June 17 through 23:59 on August 31, 2026.
The Clubcard account must be linked to the app account before the qualifying purchase. Tesco says missed points cannot be added later when the card was not linked at checkout. Refunded value also causes the corresponding points to be removed.
This is a points offer, not a promise that the eSIM price is discounted. Compare the actual checkout total and plan terms. The value of points should not compensate for the wrong country list, validity or allowance.
Coverage counts do not replace the country list
Tesco's current eSIM help page says more than 150 countries. CCS Insight reported a higher launch count, but the two descriptions may count destinations, territories or plan groupings differently. Use Tesco's first-party help wording as the safer broad claim and treat the in-app plan card as the buying decision.
For a one-country trip, check the country plan before paying for a broad region. For a border-crossing itinerary, open the regional plan's complete country list and save it offline. A Europe label does not prove every European stop is included. Our country versus regional eSIM guide shows how to compare the two.
Tesco says prices start at GBP3, but that is not a price for every route or allowance. CCS Insight recorded sample United States prices on July 3; those are a launch-day snapshot, not reliable current checkout prices. The app is the source for today's price and package conditions.
The 60-day activation rule can catch early buyers
Tesco permits installation before travel, which is helpful because hotel or airport Wi-Fi can make setup harder. Installation does not normally start the plan. Tesco says validity begins when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at the destination.
There is an important limit: the traveler has 60 days from purchase to activate by making that destination connection. If the eSIM has not activated by then, Tesco says it activates automatically on day 60 and its validity starts running.
Save the purchase date: buying more than 60 days before departure can consume some or all of the plan before the trip. Install shortly before travel on reliable Wi-Fi, but time the purchase around the automatic-activation rule.
Tesco also says an add-on starts automatically when the current plan runs out. That can extend data or validity, but travelers should confirm the specific add-on and sequence rather than assuming every plan is reloadable. Compare this behavior with our travel eSIM activation clock index and installation timing guide.
Data-only means no native mobile number, calls or SMS
The travel eSIM provides mobile data. It does not include a new phone number, carrier voice calls or ordinary SMS. Internet calling and messaging apps can use the data connection.
The Tesco International app also has a separate calling service. A traveler can use that service over an internet connection after adding the relevant calling credit, but this does not turn the travel eSIM into a voice plan. Emergency calls should use an appropriate mobile or landline service, not an app-calling product.
A dual-SIM phone can keep the home line present for calls and verification texts while the travel eSIM handles data. The home carrier may still charge for outgoing calls, answered calls, voicemail or roaming data. Turn off data switching, select the travel eSIM for cellular data and check the home carrier's incoming-SMS terms. See whether travel eSIMs include calls and SMS for the setup choices.
Reinstallation is limited and phone transfers are not supported
Tesco's current important-information page says the same eSIM can be reinstalled on the same device up to three times. It cannot be reinstalled on a different device. A traveler who replaces, loses or damages the phone should not assume the remaining plan can move to the replacement.
The phone must support eSIM and be carrier unlocked. Tesco suggests checking for an EID on iPhone or searching Android settings for eSIM or SIM Manager. Regional and carrier-specific phone variants can differ, so confirm the actual handset rather than relying only on a model family. Use the eSIM compatibility checker before purchase.
Tesco's public help pages reviewed for this story do not publish one plan-wide hotspot promise. If laptop tethering is essential, verify the feature on the exact card or ask support before paying. The same rule applies to network names, speed policies and any unlimited-data fair-use limit.
Cancellation and support depend on whether service has started
The sale terms allow a cancellation request within 14 days. A full refund may be available when service has not started. Once a plan has been used, Tesco describes a possible proportionate refund for unused service in limited circumstances, including a verifiable technical or network failure, provided the plan has not expired.
Tesco is the initial support contact through WhatsApp chat in the app or the eSIM support email. It may pass a connectivity complaint to Sim Local, which resolves complaints about the underlying service. Save the order, selected coverage, activation date and support reference if a network problem occurs.
Tesco travel eSIM or Roaming eSIM?
Tesco can be the better fit for a UK shopper who already uses Clubcard, finds a suitable in-app package and values the points. There is no honest reason to dismiss a matched plan solely because it comes through another retailer.
Roaming eSIM has the clearer edge when the loyalty route adds no value or when a traveler wants to compare plan shapes directly before committing.
| Traveler situation | Better starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tesco Mobile customer visiting a current Home From Home destination | Tesco Mobile account | The existing allowance may remove the need to buy another plan. |
| Clubcard user who sees an exact Tesco plan match before August 31 | Tesco International app | The active promotion adds triple points to a suitable purchase. |
| Traveler who wants direct country, regional and Global choices | Roaming eSIM | The public catalog can be browsed by route without a Clubcard link or partner promotion. |
| Traveler who may need extra data | Check the exact package | Roaming eSIM marks eligible packages for top-up; Tesco offers add-ons but the exact availability is plan-specific. |
| Traveler who needs hotspot, calls, SMS or a local number | Check the exact package | Neither brand name nor the word eSIM proves those features. |
π Roaming eSIM wins on open plan comparison: destination and regional pages show the available allowance, validity and package fields before checkout. My eSIMs provides one-tap, QR and manual installation paths, eligible plans can be topped up, and 24/7 support is available without relying on a time-limited Clubcard promotion.
The live Roaming eSIM catalog showed fixed and daily options for France when checked on August 11, with package-specific speed and top-up fields. Availability and price can change. Open the relevant card below and verify the exact country list, activation, calls, SMS, hotspot and reloadability before checkout.
Ten questions travelers ask about the Tesco travel eSIM
Is Tesco International travel eSIM the same as Tesco Mobile?
No. Tesco International sells a separate prepaid travel-data product supplied by Sim Local. Tesco Mobile's Home From Home is a roaming benefit for eligible Tesco Mobile customers.
Do I need a Tesco Mobile contract to buy the eSIM?
Purchase takes place in the Tesco International app, subject to the eligibility, location, device and network conditions shown at checkout.
How do the triple Clubcard points work?
Link Clubcard to the app account before buying. Qualifying travel eSIM and add-on purchases made by 23:59 on August 31, 2026 receive triple points; missed points cannot be added later if the card was not linked.
Which countries and prices are available?
Tesco says plans cover more than 150 countries and start from GBP3. Search the exact destination in the app because coverage, data, validity, network and price vary by plan.
Does the Tesco travel eSIM include calls or texts?
No native carrier calls, SMS or phone number are included. It is data-only. Internet apps work over the connection, while Tesco International calling credit is a separate service in the same app.
When does the eSIM validity start?
It normally starts when the eSIM first connects to a supported network at the destination. If that has not happened within 60 days of purchase, Tesco says the plan activates automatically on day 60.
Can I install the Tesco eSIM before flying?
Yes. Tesco recommends installing before travel. Keep the line from connecting early, retain the profile, and schedule the purchase so the 60-day automatic activation does not begin before the trip.
Can I keep my usual number for calls and verification texts?
A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the home line active while the travel eSIM supplies data. Check the home carrier's roaming charges and disable cellular-data switching so the primary line does not take over data unexpectedly.
Can I transfer the eSIM to a new phone or use a hotspot?
Tesco says the profile can be reinstalled on the same device up to three times but not moved to a different device. Its public help pages do not make one universal hotspot promise, so confirm tethering for the chosen package.
When does Roaming eSIM make more sense?
Start with Roaming eSIM when you want to compare route-specific choices on the open web, do not value Clubcard points, need a different allowance or validity, want an eligible top-up, or prefer direct 24/7 support and multiple installation paths.
Sources and updates
Tesco's live site, May 2026 terms and current help pages were checked on August 11, 2026. CCS Insight was used to date the public launch coverage, not as the source of current prices.
The Roaming eSIM comparison uses the public support page and live package endpoint. We will update this URL if Tesco changes the promotion, coverage wording, activation rule, device-transfer policy, Sim Local relationship or Home From Home overlap. A material update belongs here rather than in a second competing story.
