Royal Thai Embassy building in London, one of the missions publishing updated DTV requirements

Thailand changed the supporting documents for Destination Thailand Visa applications on August 31, 2026. Royal Thai missions in London, Rome, Seoul, Washington and Qingdao now publish two additions: proof of residence in the mission's jurisdiction and a criminal record clearance certificate.

The exact evidence is not identical everywhere. London asks for permanent residence in the UK, Ireland or a British Overseas Territory and a police certificate issued within six months. Washington lists a valid US visa or permanent resident card as residence evidence and asks for an FBI or statewide clearance issued within three months. Applicants should therefore use the checklist of the Thai mission that will decide their application, not a generic DTV checklist copied from another country.

The applicant answer: identify the mission that covers your nationality or residence before ordering a police certificate. Then confirm that mission's accepted residence document, certificate issuer, age limit, translation rules and application timing. A tourist visit to a neighboring country should not be assumed to create eligibility to apply there.

Thailand DTV changes at a glance

QuestionPosition on August 31, 2026
What changed?Reviewed Thai missions added residence proof and a criminal record clearance certificate to DTV applications.
When did the change start?August 31, 2026 at 00:00 Thailand time in the London and Seoul notices.
Is one document list valid worldwide?No. The two additions appear across several missions, but accepted evidence and certificate age differ by mission.
Can a visitor apply from any nearby country?Do not assume so. The reviewed notices require a qualifying residence connection to the mission's jurisdiction.
Are applications already submitted affected?Seoul says applications submitted before August 31 continue under the previous requirements. Confirm any incomplete or unpaid case with the deciding mission.
Did the DTV itself disappear?No. Current embassy pages still publish the DTV for workcation, approved Thai activities, and eligible spouses or children.
Does a DTV replace the TDAC?No. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is a separate arrival requirement.
Does Roaming eSIM provide visa help?No. It provides mobile data on a compatible unlocked device and cannot determine visa eligibility.

The two new document checks

The Royal Thai Embassy in London says its e-Visa system now requires DTV applicants to provide proof of permanent residence in the UK, Ireland or a British Overseas Territory. That replaces the previous document showing only the applicant's current location. It also makes a criminal record clearance certificate mandatory.

The Royal Thai Embassy in Rome gives the same start date and asks for a document proving residence status in Italy, Cyprus, Albania or Libya, plus a criminal record certificate. Seoul says current-location evidence has been replaced by proof of permanent residence and adds the criminal record certificate. Washington has added both items to its current checklists for workcation, Thai activity and dependent applications.

Those notices close an obvious planning shortcut. Being physically present in a country is not the same as proving the residence status accepted by its Thai mission. Before booking a side trip to submit an application, open that mission's current page and check whether it accepts your immigration status.

What counts as proof of residence depends on the mission

There is no useful one-line answer for every applicant. The reviewed pages use different wording and examples:

Deciding missionPublished residence positionPractical check
LondonPermanent residence in the UK, Ireland or British Overseas Territories, with examples such as indefinite leave to remain or Irish long-term residencyAsk whether your exact status meets the DTV rule before submitting
RomeA document proving residence status in Italy, Cyprus, Albania or LibyaUse the mission's current document list for the relevant country
WashingtonProof of permanent residence, with a valid US visa or permanent resident card listed as examplesNon-US citizens should check the remaining validity and additional evidence on the page
SeoulProof of permanent residence replaces proof of current locationUse the Korean mission's current DTV page and upload instructions

Washington's use of a valid US visa shows why applicants should not invent a definition from the English phrase alone. London gives narrower examples. A temporary visa, work permit, residence card and permanent resident status are not interchangeable in every jurisdiction.

Send the mission a concise question when its page does not name your document: state your nationality, current immigration status, country of application and intended DTV category. Do not email passport numbers, bank statements or police records unless the mission's secure process requests them.

Police certificate age and format are not uniform

London says its police clearance must be issued within six months of submission. It names an ACRO certificate or Irish police certificate as examples. Washington asks for an FBI certificate or statewide police clearance issued within three months.

This difference changes the order of work. A certificate accepted by one mission can be too old or from the wrong authority for another. Before paying for the document, confirm:

  1. which country may issue it;
  2. whether a national or regional certificate is accepted;
  3. how recent it must be on the submission date;
  4. whether fingerprints are required by the issuing authority;
  5. whether the mission needs the original, a scan or both;
  6. whether translation, notarization, legalization or an apostille is required; and
  7. whether dependents need separate certificates.

London says supporting documents must be in English or Thai, with certified translation and government legalization for material issued in another language. Washington also publishes translation and notarization conditions for supporting material issued outside Thailand and the United States. Follow the deciding mission's wording because these are local processing requirements, not interchangeable examples.

What happens to an application started before August 31

The Seoul embassy says applications submitted before August 31, 2026 continue under the previous document requirements. That is useful for a completed submission, but it does not answer every edge case, such as a saved draft, failed payment, request for more documents or an application moved between missions.

Check the status inside the official Thai e-Visa portal and contact the deciding mission when the file was not fully submitted before the cutover. Do not cancel and restart merely because a third-party article says the old rules apply. Visa fees can be non-refundable, and a new application can put the file under the current checklist.

Applicants who already hold a valid DTV should also separate application rules from entry conditions. The reviewed August notices describe supporting documents for new applications. They do not announce cancellation of existing DTVs. A holder with a document-specific concern should still ask Thai immigration or the issuing mission rather than relying on that silence as a legal guarantee.

Build the application around the deciding mission

Use this order to avoid paying for the wrong document:

  1. Choose the DTV category that matches the actual purpose: workcation, an eligible Thai activity, or an eligible dependent.
  2. Identify the Thai embassy or consulate responsible for the country where you can prove the required residence connection.
  3. Read that mission's DTV page and general e-Visa instructions on the same day.
  4. Ask the mission about any ambiguous residence status before obtaining a police certificate.
  5. Order the certificate from an accepted authority and leave time for delivery, translation and any required authentication.
  6. Prepare category evidence, financial records, passport material and photographs using the mission's current file rules.
  7. Upload clear files in the accepted format and size. Do not use screenshots when the mission rejects them.
  8. Check the portal and email for additional-document requests until a decision arrives.
  9. Avoid non-refundable flights or accommodation when the mission recommends flexible bookings.
  10. Save the approval, itinerary and official contact details offline before travel.

London currently recommends applying six to eight weeks before departure and says standard processing is about 15 working days. That timing belongs to London and can stretch when more documents or an interview are required. It should not be copied as a promise from another mission.

The DTV purpose and stay are separate from this document change

The current Washington DTV page still lists three broad purposes: remote work or freelance work for foreign activity, specified Thai activities such as Muay Thai or culinary training and medical treatment, and eligible spouses or children under 20 of DTV holders. It lists a five-year visa validity.

Those headline terms do not make every application identical. Workcation applicants need employment or portfolio evidence. Activity applicants need evidence from the organizer or medical provider. Dependents need relationship and main-holder documents. Financial evidence and local mission requirements still apply.

Do not use a DTV article to decide whether work for a Thai employer is allowed, whether a particular course qualifies or how an extension will be assessed. Ask the responsible authority about the exact activity and circumstances.

Dependents need their own document check

Washington now lists residence proof and a criminal record clearance in its dependent checklist as well as its main DTV categories. London says dependents under 16 may submit the primary DTV holder's police clearance certificate. That is a mission-specific allowance, not proof that every mission handles children the same way.

For each spouse or child, check whether the mission asks for a separate application, financial evidence, relationship certificate, translated civil document, parental consent or police certificate. Make the family document list before ordering translations because the same marriage or birth certificate may need a particular certification process.

DTV approval does not replace Thailand arrival steps

The DTV is a visa. The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is a separate arrival record. London's current guidance says foreign travelers complete the TDAC within three days before arrival and warns that the form is free. Use the official portal rather than a paid lookalike.

Our Thailand THIM app and TDAC guide tracks the app and arrival-form workflow. The Thailand visa exemption guide owns short tourist-entry rules. Neither page should be used as a DTV document checklist.

Keep the e-Visa approval, TDAC confirmation, accommodation details, onward plan and mission contact available offline. Mobile data is useful after landing, but entry should not depend on opening one cloud account at the immigration desk.

Where Roaming eSIM fits on a DTV trip

Roaming eSIM does not issue visas, police certificates, local phone numbers or residence documents. Its role is narrower: mobile data for maps, transport, accommodation messages, portal checks and internet calling on a compatible unlocked phone.

The public Thailand catalog check on August 31 returned current fixed-data and daily choices. Package cards publish their own data, validity, price, network, speed and top-up status. The Thailand Roaming eSIM page owns plan selection. Travelers continuing through Asia can compare the regional cards below, but they should check the selected card's country list and terms before checkout.

Roaming eSIM's practical edge is a visible travel-data choice before arrival: the current Thailand catalog shows plan-level details and named network partners, and the site publishes a 24/7 support route for connectivity questions. This is an arrival and travel-data option, not a substitute for a long-stay local number or advice from a Thai mission.

The travel data calculator can estimate an initial allowance. Check when to install a Roaming eSIM, confirm the device with the eSIM compatibility checker, and read the calls and SMS guide if banking or account access depends on the home number.

Ten Thailand DTV questions applicants are asking

What changed for Thailand DTV applications on August 31, 2026?

Reviewed Thai missions added proof of residence in their jurisdiction and a criminal record clearance certificate. The exact accepted documents vary by mission.

Can I apply for a DTV while visiting Laos, Vietnam or another nearby country?

Do not assume a tourist stay qualifies. The new notices require a residence connection to the deciding mission's jurisdiction. Ask that mission before making a visa-run booking.

Does a work visa or temporary residence permit count as permanent residence?

There is no single answer in the reviewed notices. Washington lists a valid US visa as one example, while London uses examples such as indefinite leave to remain. Ask the mission handling the application about the exact status.

How recent must the police clearance certificate be?

London says within six months of submission. Washington says within three months. Use the age limit published by the deciding mission.

Which country should issue the criminal record certificate?

Follow the mission's current page. The accepted authority and country can depend on nationality, residence and where the application is filed.

Does the certificate need translation or legalization?

Possibly. London and Washington publish language and authentication rules, but the details differ. Check before ordering a translation or apostille.

Are applications submitted before August 31 grandfathered?

Seoul says applications submitted before August 31 continue under the old document requirements. Saved drafts, incomplete payments and transferred files need confirmation from the deciding mission.

Do dependents need their own police certificates?

It depends on the mission and age. London allows a dependent under 16 to use the primary holder's certificate, while Washington lists a clearance in its dependent checklist.

Did the DTV's five-year validity change?

The reviewed August notices change supporting documents. Washington's current page still lists five-year validity. Check the final approval and current mission guidance for the actual visa issued.

Does a DTV remove the need for a TDAC?

No. The TDAC is a separate arrival record for covered foreign travelers. Complete it through the free official portal within the published window.

Sources and updates

This report was checked on August 31, 2026 against current Royal Thai Embassy and consulate pages in London, Rome, Seoul, Washington and Qingdao, plus the official e-Visa and TDAC portals.

The visa-exemption page retains short tourist-entry intent, the THIM page retains the arrival-app and TDAC workflow, and the Thailand product page retains plan-shopping intent. This page will be updated when Thai missions materially change residence evidence, police-certificate rules, transition treatment or the DTV application process.
