Thailand tourist SIM 60-day limit: top-ups do not extend it
Thailand limits a foreign tourist SIM to 60 days of use. Adding credit does not push that deadline forward. A visitor who wants to continue using the line must confirm their identity again through the operator.
The rule is not new today. Thailand's telecom regulator, the NBTC, made it effective on August 30, 2025. It matters now because AIS and True-dtac have implemented the limit in their current tourist pages, while older travel advice still tells visitors that each top-up extends a prepaid number.
There are two dates to track. The data package may last 1, 8, 15, 30 or 60 days, depending on what was bought. The tourist SIM itself cannot remain usable beyond its 60-day ceiling without re-identification. A short package can finish well before day 60.
The traveler takeaway: topping up can add credit or buy another eligible package while the tourist line is active. It does not turn the line into an indefinitely renewable Thai number. If keeping the number matters, start the operator's re-identification process before the deadline.
What Thailand's tourist SIM rule says
The NBTC's August 2025 notice introduced eight anti-scam measures. For foreign mobile users, it sets three practical rules:
- A foreign person may register no more than three mobile numbers per operator.
- A passport is the identity document used to register the foreign user.
- A tourist SIM may be used for no more than 60 days. Top-up cannot extend that period, and continued use requires another identity check.
The notice says the measures took effect on August 30, 2025. It does not say every tourist package includes 60 days of data, calls or credit. The operator's package period still controls what is included.
Another NBTC identity notice brought liveness detection into new-line registration and same-number SIM replacement from August 18, 2025. It tells a non-Thai customer to use an original, unexpired passport. An operator may complete the check through its app, service center or authorized seller, depending on the transaction and the process it supports.

The 60-day clock and package validity are not the same
An eight-day tourist package does not become a 60-day data plan. Its included data and calls end according to the package terms. True-dtac says later use may fall back to another promotion or out-of-bundle charging, and it publishes separate top-up instructions.
The reverse is also important. Buying more credit before the package ends does not move the tourist line's regulatory ceiling beyond day 60. True-dtac's current conditions say tourist SIM validity cannot be extended by top-up after expiry. AIS says a foreign tourist who wants to continue beyond 60 days must reconfirm their identity.
Think of the two clocks separately:
- The package clock decides how long the purchased allowance lasts.
- The tourist-line clock decides how long the registered line can continue without another identity check.
This distinction matters on a long stay, a return trip or when a Thai number has been given to a bank, accommodation host, delivery service or local contact. A remaining balance is not proof that the number will remain available.
Ordinary Thai prepaid number protection excludes tourist SIMs
Thailand added an automatic number-retention service for ordinary prepaid users on May 14, 2026. When an eligible prepaid number reaches the end of its validity with money remaining, the operator can deduct 3 baht plus tax and extend the line for 30 days, up to six times.
The NBTC announcement explicitly excludes tourist SIMs from that protection. A visitor should not expect a remaining balance to trigger the same automatic 180-day safeguard.
The regulator also explains that an ordinary prepaid number can eventually be canceled and returned to circulation after the protection ends. It does not publish a separate promise that an expired tourist number will be held for its former user.
Number-retention point: re-identification is the route for continued tourist-line use, but it is not a guarantee that an already canceled or recycled number can be recovered. Contact the operator before expiry when the number is important.
How AIS re-identification works after 60 days
AIS publishes two current routes for a tourist who wants to continue using an AIS Tourist SIM beyond 60 days:
- Send the passport number by SMS to 4444161, then complete the verification through the link in the reply.
- Visit an AIS Shop for in-person help.
AIS also says a number registered to an individual must be activated within 60 days of registration. If activation happens later, another identity check is required before the line can be switched on.
Do not wait until a travel day to test this. The SMS route depends on the line being able to send and receive the verification exchange, and the web step needs an internet connection. If the number is already unavailable, take the passport, phone and SIM details to an AIS Shop.
How True and dtac handle the 60-day limit
True-dtac's combined tourist page says all tourist products must follow the validity shown on the package and cannot exceed 60 days. It also says top-up cannot extend SIM validity after expiry.
For continued use, True-dtac directs customers to re-identify with a passport at a True or dtac shop, or to contact the appropriate call center:

The page does not promise that a call-center conversation alone will complete every expired-line case. Ask what documents and channel apply to the exact number before traveling to a shop. dtac's registration page tells tourists using its in-person route to bring the passport, SIM and original SIM package.
Airport counters exist at several major airports, but opening hours and the services completed at a particular counter can change. A city service center is a safer plan for a long-stay customer who needs account help rather than a new arrival package.
Does the rule apply to a local tourist digital SIM?
Yes, when the digital profile is an operator-issued Thai tourist line. The rule attaches to the tourist mobile number and its registration, not to whether the profile is stored on plastic or downloaded to the phone.
A local tourist digital profile can still be useful. Depending on the package, it may include a Thai +66 number, local calls, incoming SMS or operator Wi-Fi. Those features are valuable when a traveler needs a local number.
It also carries the same identity and validity questions as the operator's tourist product. Buying digitally does not convert a Thai tourist line into a foreign roaming line.
Roaming eSIM is a different type of service
Roaming eSIM supplies travel data through supported Thai networks without opening a new Thai tourist number for the customer. It therefore does not depend on keeping a local tourist line alive by topping up or re-identifying it at day 60.
The public Thailand catalog was checked on August 15, 2026. It returned 34 current packages and named AIS, dtac, TrueMove H or True Move in the coverage fields, depending on the card. Thirty-one of those packages were marked as eligible for top-up.
The longest listed choice was a Thailand 50GB plan valid for 180 days at USD 64. Its public card named AIS, dtac and TrueMove H, showed 3G/4G/5G, and marked that exact plan as top-up eligible. Price, inventory, supported networks and plan fields can change, so the live card is the source of truth at checkout.

What to do before day 60 or a return trip
- Check the activation date in the operator app, receipt or first-use message.
- Check the package expiry separately from the tourist-line deadline.
- Decide whether retaining the Thai number matters. List any bank, booking or account that uses it.
- If keeping an AIS line, start the published SMS verification or visit an AIS Shop before expiry.
- If keeping a True or dtac line, contact the published call center and confirm whether a shop visit is required.
- Carry the original, unexpired passport for an in-person identity check.
- Save the SIM package or account details when the operator asks for them.
- Do not assume a cash balance gives a tourist line ordinary prepaid number-retention protection.

When does the 60-day tourist SIM clock start?
AIS describes the period as 60 days from activation. Use the operator's activation record for the exact line rather than counting from the flight date or the day the package was ordered.
Does a top-up extend a Thai tourist SIM beyond 60 days?
No. The NBTC rule and True-dtac's current terms say top-up cannot extend tourist-line validity beyond the ceiling. A top-up can still add usable credit or an eligible package before expiry.
Is a 30-day data package valid for 60 days?
