TIFF 2026 guide: tickets, venues and Toronto travel

The Toronto International Film Festival runs from September 10 to 20, 2026. The schedule is live, member ticket windows are under way, and public tickets go on sale Monday, August 31 at noon Toronto time.

The short answer: choose screenings before August 31, buy on the platform assigned to your customer type, and add every mobile ticket to a phone wallet. A screenshot will not scan. Leave at least 45 minutes between central venues, and more when one screening ends near Festival Street crowds.

This guide was checked against current TIFF ticket, visitor and transport information on August 25. It focuses on the decisions a public attendee must make. The official film pages remain the source for programme changes and individual screening availability.

TIFF 2026 at a glance

The 2026 ticket calendar

TIFF released its 2026 schedule on August 11. Ticket access then opens in stages. Higher membership levels started buying on August 21, followed by other membership windows. Insider Visa and Under-25 access runs from August 28 to 30. The general public sale starts August 31 at noon.

You do not need a TIFF membership to attend. Membership changes when a buyer can enter the sale, not whether the public can buy a remaining seat. A first-time visitor who does not already want the wider membership benefits should not buy a tier merely because a social thread says every good screening will disappear. Build a ranked list and use the public sale first.

The official TIFF films page has the live schedule. Search by title, date or programme, then note the screening type, venue and exact start time. Save two alternatives for every first choice. A schedule containing only famous premieres is fragile because those screenings attract the most member demand.

Buy and manage tickets on the same platform

TIFF uses two ticket systems. The general public, Individual members and Industry members buy through Ticketmaster.ca. Contributor and Patron members, plus designated stakeholders, use TIFF Festival Account Manager. The official TIFF ticket FAQ explains the split.

Manage a ticket where it was bought. Ticketmaster.ca purchases belong in that Ticketmaster account. TIFF Festival Account Manager purchases stay in the festival account. Signing into the other site with the same email address does not move a ticket across systems.

Before the sale opens:

1. Sign into the correct account and confirm the mobile number and email.
2. Remove an expired card and add a valid payment method.
3. Write down the exact date, time and venue for each first choice.
4. Rank alternatives instead of opening a large set of competing checkout tabs.
5. After purchase, confirm that each ticket appears in the same platform used at checkout.

TIFF box offices are cashless except at TIFF Lightbox. That exception does not make an in-person box office a safer plan for a high-demand public sale.

A screenshot of a TIFF ticket will not work

TIFF uses SafeTix mobile tickets with a changing barcode. A screenshot, photograph or printed image of that barcode does not scan. Open the ticket through its original account and add it to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet before reaching the venue.

The phone wallet is the best backup because it avoids an account sign-in at the door. Add the ticket while the phone has a stable connection, raise the screen brightness before the line moves, and keep enough battery for the final screening. A charging cable without a power source is not a complete backup, so carry a charged power bank that complies with your airline's rules.

If one person bought tickets for a group arriving separately, transfer the tickets through the purchasing platform. Do not send screenshots in a group chat. Each recipient should accept the transfer and add the ticket to their own wallet before departure.

What "off sale" means before August 31

An off-sale label means the system is not currently offering a seat. It does not explain why. Member purchases, held inventory, partner allocations and later ticket releases can all affect what appears during the staged sales period.

Do not assume that an off-sale screening will definitely return, and do not pay an unofficial seller because someone promises a later transfer. Check the official listing again during the public sale and in the days before the screening. TIFF can release inventory, but no particular title or time is guaranteed to reopen.

The practical strategy is to keep one high-demand choice, one same-day alternative and one film you would be happy to discover. That is more useful than refreshing a single unavailable premiere while other sessions sell.

Premium, Regular and TIFF: The Market are different

A Premium screening may include a red carpet, an introduction, a question session or invited guests. The label does not guarantee that an actor, director or any named person will attend. Travel plans built around a celebrity appearance can fail even when the ticket remains valid.

Regular screenings are often the better first TIFF experience for someone who wants the film rather than the arrival line. They use assigned seats and can still include filmmaker appearances. The programme page and ticket listing, not the word Premium alone, should guide the choice.

TIFF: The Market runs from September 10 to 16 and is an industry event. It is not a replacement for a public festival ticket. Visitors searching for public screenings should stay on the festival film and ticket pages unless they have a professional reason and valid Market access.

Rush is a standby line, not a reservation

When a screening has no seats for sale, TIFF may form a Rush line. People are admitted only if seats become available. The line is first come, and joining it does not guarantee entry.

TIFF asks ticket holders to arrive 30 minutes before a screening. A purchased seat is held until 15 minutes before the start, after which it may be offered to the Rush line. Admission stops 10 minutes after the film begins. These thresholds are a poor reason to arrive at the last moment: security, toilets and a slow venue entrance can use the entire buffer.

Rush works best when the failed attempt does not ruin the rest of the day. Choose a venue near another acceptable screening, meal or free Festival Street activity. Do not build a cross-city journey around a Rush line with a fixed airport or train departure afterward.

Five central TIFF venues and their addresses

The current TIFF visitor page lists these five public venues. Always use the address on the individual screening because the programme can include additional locations.

The map makes these venues look interchangeable. They are not. A screening ending at its listed runtime still needs credits, audience exit and a walk through TIFF crowds. Use 45 minutes as a practical minimum between nearby central venues. Leave 60 to 75 minutes if you need food, an accessible route, a ticket issue or a change involving a venue outside this group.

Do not leave one film early to protect the next booking. TIFF does not admit anyone more than 10 minutes after a screening starts, so an aggressive double booking can lose the end of one film and all of the next.

Festival Street changes King Street from September 10 to 13

Festival Street occupies King Street West during opening weekend, September 10 to 13. The closure creates public programming and a walkable festival area, but it also changes how visitors reach the venues.

The King streetcar does not operate between University Avenue and Spadina Avenue during the closure. St. Andrew is the closest subway station to TIFF Lightbox, about 450 metres or a six-minute walk under TIFF's current guidance. Union Station is roughly a 15-minute walk.

Use subway or walking directions that account for the closure rather than following an old route saved for a normal weekday. A streetcar prediction app can still show useful service on either side of the closed section, but it cannot carry a rider through the pedestrianized block.

Drivers should use the exact venue drop-off guidance. TIFF lists 106 John Street for Lightbox and the Princess of Wales Rush line, 14 Duncan Street for Princess ticket holders and Royal Alexandra, and Richmond Street access for Scotiabank Theatre. A rideshare pin placed on closed King Street may move or cancel when the car reaches the control.

Pearson and Billy Bishop airport routes

From Toronto Pearson, UP Express runs to Union Station. From Union, walk to the King Street venues, take Line 1 to St. Andrew, or use an accessible surface option. Check UP Express service information on the travel date, especially for a late arrival or early flight.

TTC also connects Pearson to the city by bus and subway. It is usually slower but can suit accommodation away from downtown. A taxi or rideshare reduces transfers, though Festival Street controls may prevent a door-to-door King Street drop-off.

Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport is much closer to downtown. Travelers can use the pedestrian tunnel, airport shuttle, TTC, taxi or rideshare. Leave time for the terminal-to-mainland transfer before estimating the trip to a screening.

A flight landing one hour before a film is not a workable TIFF plan. Baggage, immigration, airport transfer, traffic and the 30-minute arrival recommendation all sit between the runway and the seat.

Bags, food and the security line

Public visitor bags cannot exceed 12 by 12 by 6 inches. TIFF checks bags, and outside food is not allowed. A small bag shortens inspection and is easier to place at an assigned cinema seat.

Carry the phone, wallet, medication, charger and a light layer. Do not pack a full sightseeing day into a suitcase and expect the cinema to store it. Arrange luggage storage with the hotel or another verified service before entering the festival area.

Reusable water-bottle treatment can vary by venue and security conditions. Check the current visitor page before setting out, and follow the instruction at the entrance rather than arguing from an older festival post.

Accessibility and arrival support

TIFF provides accessibility information and asks visitors to contact Customer Relations for accommodation questions. A route that is short on a map may involve a different door, elevator or drop-off point, so confirm the screening venue and access route in advance.

The official visitor guidance lists a Wheel-Trans stop at Wellington Street West and John Street. The most useful booking note is the exact screening, venue, time and support needed. "Going to TIFF" is not specific enough when several venues are operating at once.

If standing in Rush is not workable, contact TIFF before relying on that route. Rush remains subject to seat availability, and an accommodation cannot create inventory in a full screening.

Build a one-day plan that can survive a delay

For a first visit, two booked screenings are usually enough. Put at least 45 minutes between central venues and keep one meal window that is not tied to a reservation. Festival Street can fill the gap on opening weekend.

For three screenings, keep the first two close together and make the last one optional only if it has not been purchased. Three paid tickets create three fixed arrival deadlines. The schedule may fit on paper while the venue exits, security lines and food stops do not.

A realistic day has:

1. One top-priority screening with an early arrival.
2. One nearby booked film after a proper transfer window.
3. One flexible block for food, Festival Street or a Rush attempt.
4. A saved route home that does not depend on the final streetcar through the closure.

Mobile data for a TIFF trip

An international visitor may need data before reaching hotel Wi-Fi: at Pearson, on UP Express, when a venue changes, or while opening the correct ticket account.
