Only four of ten checked travel eSIM providers publish the full APN safety trio

Four of the ten travel eSIM providers in this study publish all three APN safety checks a traveler needs before changing connection settings: they make manual editing conditional, point to a value supplied for the plan or destination, and explain what should remain automatic, blank or unchanged.

Those four are Roaming eSIM, Airalo, Nomad and MobiMatter. Airalo and Nomad also publish iOS, Android and recovery instructions, giving them the highest overall documentation score at 6 of 6.

Study result: 7 of 10 providers say the APN is automatic, preconfigured or manual only when required. Five point to a plan-specific value. Seven publish iOS instructions, nine publish Android instructions, seven explain safe editing and nine provide a recovery step.

This is a documentation study. It does not show which provider connects more reliably or how often a manual APN is needed. An APN can vary by plan, underlying supplier, destination and device. The selected plan's install details remain more important than a generic value found in a forum.

Airalo and Nomad publish all six checked APN fields

Airalo and Nomad each score 6 of 6. Both explain the normal automatic state, tell the traveler where the correct plan value comes from, cover iOS and Android, identify fields that should stay blank and give a post-edit recovery step.

Holafly and Saily score 5 of 6. Both publish device paths, safe field handling and recovery guidance. Their checked pages publish a provider-wide APN rather than directing the traveler to an order-specific value, so they do not receive the plan-specific point.

Roaming eSIM, Ubigi, MobiMatter and Jetpac score 4 of 6 for different reasons. Roaming eSIM publishes the full safety trio and a recovery route, but its public support hub does not show the APN menu path for iOS or Android. MobiMatter publishes an Android path but not an iOS path or a recovery step on the checked page. Ubigi and Jetpac cover both device families but do not publish every default or field-handling decision.

GigSky and aloSIM score 3 of 6. Both publish useful guidance. GigSky's checked article is Android-specific, while aloSIM covers iPhone, Pixel and Samsung but does not state the automatic default or what to do with every other editable field.

How to read the score: A higher score means the checked public pages answer more of the same six questions. It is not a test of activation success, signal, speed, network coverage, support quality or the number of customers who encounter APN problems.

How the six-field APN readiness score works

Each provider receives one point when the checked first-party guidance explicitly publishes a field:

Automatic or conditional default: the APN is normally automatic or preconfigured, or manual setup applies only when the plan or device requires it.
Plan-specific value route: the correct value comes from the order, plan, underlying provider or destination rather than a single provider-wide code.
iOS instructions: the checked guidance gives a direct iPhone or iPad APN menu path.
Android instructions: the checked guidance gives a direct Android, Samsung or Pixel APN path.
Safe edit instruction: the page says when not to edit, which fields to change, or which fields stay blank, automatic or unchanged.
Recovery route: the page gives a restart, airplane-mode, reset, reselection or direct support step.

A field marked not stated may exist in an app, account, order email or another page. It earns zero because a reproducible public documentation audit cannot infer unseen instructions.

Roaming eSIM is one of four providers with the APN safety trio

🏆 Roaming eSIM APN advantage: Roaming eSIM joins Airalo, Nomad and MobiMatter as the only four checked providers to publish all three safety fields. Its public hub tells travelers to leave the APN automatic unless their install details or support give a specific value. The order install page then keeps the APN with the QR code, manual setup values and ICCID.

This is a practical advantage when different packages can use different connection details. The traveler is directed back to the purchased plan rather than given one universal Roaming eSIM APN to reuse across orders.

Roaming eSIM does not lead the full six-field score. The public support hub explains the connection sequence for iPhone and Android, but it does not publish the operating-system APN menu path on the checked page. Airalo and Nomad do, so they score two points higher.

The distinction matters. Roaming eSIM performs well on the decision about whether and what to edit. Its public documentation can still be improved by adding direct APN menu paths for both operating systems without replacing the plan-specific order value.

Device instructions are common, but plan-specific values are less common

Nine providers publish Android APN instructions while five point to a plan-specific value

Nine of ten providers publish an Android APN path. Seven publish an iOS path. This difference is consistent with the help pages themselves: several are written specifically for Android because its Access Point Names screen is commonly exposed for manual entries.

Only five providers tell the traveler to use a value tied to the plan, order, underlying supplier or destination. Roaming eSIM points to the order install page. Airalo points to How to connect in the app. Nomad first identifies the underlying provider. MobiMatter points to product information in the app or confirmation email. Jetpac uses a country list.

The other five checked pages publish a provider-wide value such as Global, wbdata, mbb, gigsky or alosim. That can be clear and useful. It simply answers a different question from a plan-specific source route.

What does each provider tell the traveler to do?

Airalo

Airalo says an absent APN in the plan details means the eSIM is configured automatically. When a value is present, the page directs the traveler to the Airalo app and gives both iOS and Android paths. It says to enter the value exactly, leave the other fields blank and restart if data does not connect.

Holafly

Holafly says APNs are preconfigured on iPhone and Samsung in most cases. Its checked page publishes Global, gives direct iPhone and Samsung steps, links guides for other Android brands and explains network resets. The page uses a provider-wide value, so it does not earn the plan-specific point.

Saily

Saily's Android activation guidance says opening the app for up to five minutes can configure a missing APN automatically. Separate iOS and Android troubleshooting pages publish wbdata, specify the fields, leave others blank and include reboot, reset and support steps.

Nomad

Nomad says most APNs configure automatically. Manual setup starts by identifying the underlying eSIM provider in the installation email, app or web store because several APN values are possible. The page covers iOS, Samsung and Pixel, keeps username and password blank, and gives airplane-mode and support recovery steps.

Ubigi

Ubigi publishes mbb and covers iOS, Android and Windows. Its iOS instructions name four APN fields, while Android uses the APN field and save action. The checked FAQ does not state whether the value normally arrives automatically or whether a plan can use a different value.

MobiMatter

MobiMatter makes manual setup conditional, points to the value in product information or the confirmation email, gives an Android add-and-select flow and says not to modify other fields. The checked article does not cover iOS or give a separate recovery action.

GigSky

GigSky says Android phones typically receive the APN when the eSIM downloads. The page publishes gigsky and separate Samsung, Pixel and other Android paths. Its Pixel and other Android steps say Reset to Default deletes APNs already listed, which is why the exact selected line matters.

Jetpac

Jetpac's public guide includes Apple, Samsung and Pixel tabs, a short APN video, a country-list value route, a restart instruction and direct WhatsApp and email links. The checked guide does not state whether setup is normally automatic or what every other editable APN field should contain.

aloSIM

aloSIM publishes alosim and shows where to verify it on iPhone, Pixel and Samsung. The page explains which screenshot support may request and links separate editing guides. It does not state the automatic default or give a rule for every other field on the checked page.

What is an APN, and when should you change it?

An Access Point Name tells a phone how its cellular data session should reach the mobile network. Google describes it as information that helps the carrier find the right IP address and connect the phone securely. Samsung notes that the details vary by network operator.

Apple says some carriers require APN entry, while others can supply settings automatically. It also says the menu is visible or editable only when the carrier allows it. If the setting is missing on an iPhone, that does not by itself prove the eSIM is broken.

The safest common rule across the device-maker and provider guidance is simple: do not guess. Use the value and fields supplied for the selected plan. If the provider says setup is automatic and mobile data works, there is no evidence-based reason to replace the value.

What should you save before leaving Wi-Fi?

Save the install page, confirmation email or app screen that contains the plan details.
Record the APN only if the provider supplies one for the selected plan.
Save the iOS or Android instructions that match the phone.
Label the travel line so it is not confused with the home SIM.
Save the provider's support route and order number.
Keep offline maps, tickets and accommodation details available.
Do not delete the eSIM as the first troubleshooting step.

What should you check when an eSIM has signal but no data?

Start with the selected line, not the APN. Confirm that the plan covers the current destination, is active, has data remaining and is selected for mobile data. Check whether data roaming must be enabled for the travel line and whether automatic data switching could move data back to the home line.

Then follow the provider's sequence:

Toggle airplane mode for the interval the provider recommends.
Restart the phone if the provider includes that step.
Compare the selected line's APN with the exact plan value.
Change only the fields named by the provider.
Save and select the new entry when Android requires it.
Contact support before deleting the profile or copying an unverified value.

Ten APN questions travelers ask before and during a trip

The public Reddit sample was qualitative. Search indexing did not provide reliable question volume, so the order below is not a popularity ranking. The questions were used to test whether the article solves real setup uncertainty.

Why do some travel eSIM plans still require a manual APN?

APN provisioning can differ by plan, supplier and device. Seven providers in this sample describe setup as automatic, preconfigured or manual only when required. A manual instruction does not prove a poor network. It means the traveler needs the correct value and field rules for that plan.

What should I check when the eSIM is active but mobile data does not connect?

Confirm coverage, plan status, remaining data, selected mobile-data line and the travel line's roaming setting before editing the APN. Signal bars show network registration, not necessarily a working data path. Use the provider's ordered troubleshooting steps and preserve the profile.

Where should the correct APN value come from?

Use the provider's order page, plan screen, installation email, underlying-supplier list or destination list. Five providers in this study publish a plan-specific route. A provider-wide help value can also be valid when that provider explicitly says it applies to the checked service.

Can an automatically populated APN contain the wrong extra fields?

Public traveler reports show that users compare fields when one phone works and another does not. Those reports can identify a question, but they cannot establish the correct value for a different plan. Compare the phone with the first-party instructions and contact support before clearing fields.

Should I create a new APN or edit the existing entry?

Follow the provider's device-specific instruction. Some guides create and select a new Android entry, while others edit or verify an existing value. Do not apply a Nomad, GigSky or Samsung reset sequence to another provider unless that provider directs you to do so.

Should username, password, proxy and other fields stay blank?

Seven providers publish some safe field-handling rule. Airalo, Saily and Nomad explicitly leave several fields blank. MobiMatter says not to modify other fields. Use that plan's wording because an unrelated example cannot prove which optional fields your current profile needs.

What if a new APN will not save on Android?

Check that the travel eSIM is selected, every required field has a valid value and the provider's save action was completed. Some Android guides use the three-dot menu. If the provider suggests editing an existing entry after save fails, use only its supplied values.

Why is the APN menu missing or locked on iPhone?

Apple says the carrier controls whether the APN can be viewed or edited. Contact the provider when Cellular Data Network or Mobile Data Network is absent. Do not treat a hidden menu as proof that the profile needs deletion or that a generic configuration profile is safe.

Should I reset APNs to default before adding the travel value?

Only when the selected provider and device guide says to. Reset behavior can remove listed APNs or restore carrier defaults. Save the current state, confirm the correct travel line and understand what the reset affects before using it as a general troubleshooting shortcut.

Should I restart or toggle airplane mode after changing an APN?

Nine providers publish a recovery route, and several include restart or airplane mode. Use the interval and order given by the provider. A refresh can apply a saved entry, but it will not fix an expired plan, unsupported destination, locked phone or exhausted allowance.

How we audited travel eSIM APN guidance

The provider panel was fixed before APN classification. It reuses the same ten international providers from the earlier Roaming eSIM app-requirement and support-access audits: Roaming eSIM, Airalo, Holafly, Saily, Nomad, Ubigi, MobiMatter, GigSky, Jetpac and aloSIM.

The source file is scripts/research/data/travel-esim-apn-readiness-index-source.json. Run node scripts/research/generate-travel-esim-apn-readiness-index.mjs to rebuild the dataset and three charts. The generated JSON records the source-file checksum and refresh command.
