TSA Gateside guide: airport list, rules and how to apply

TSA Gateside lets an eligible person enter the post-security area of a participating U.S. airport without a plane ticket. The visitor must already qualify for TSA PreCheck screening, apply one to three days before the visit and receive approval. The useful part is not shopping behind security. It is being able to walk a nervous traveler to the gate, meet a domestic arrival, spend a layover with a friend or help a child navigate the terminal. The important limitation is equally clear: Gateside is not a boarding pass, does not bypass screening and does not replace airline assistance for a passenger with a disability.

The shortest safe plan: apply through TSA, confirm that the airport appears in the portal, enter every accompanying child, bring an acceptable ID and log in to the live dashboard before joining the TSA PreCheck lane. A screenshot or printout may be refused.

Who can apply for Gateside by TSA PreCheck?

The official Gateside page says access is for people who can use TSA PreCheck screening. That includes TSA PreCheck members, certain federal employees and eligible members of other trusted-traveler programs who have a Known Traveler Number.

Having an acceptable passport is not enough on its own. A foreign visitor may carry an ID that TSA accepts at a checkpoint, but Gateside still requires eligibility for TSA PreCheck screening and an approved application. Someone without that eligibility should check for an airport visitor-pass program or ask the passenger's airline whether a limited escort pass is available.

The applicant's name, date of birth and Known Traveler Number must match the information in the trusted-traveler record. TSA says a mismatch can cause denial. A correct application can also be denied after an airport reaches its daily visitor limit.

How to apply for a TSA Gateside pass

Do not wait until you reach the airport. TSA accepts requests only within a narrow window: one to three days before the planned visit.

1. Open the Gateside page and choose Apply.
2. Create or sign in to a Login.gov account.
3. Enter the requested personal details and Known Traveler Number exactly as they appear in the trusted-traveler record.
4. Select the participating airport and visit date.
5. Add every child who will accompany the approved adult.
6. Submit the request, then return to the portal dashboard to check the result.
7. On the visit day, log in before reaching the document checker and keep the live approval status ready.

TSA does not issue a boarding-pass-style Gateside document. The officer checks the visitor's ID, and may ask to see the approval in the portal. TSA explicitly says screenshots and printouts are not accepted when portal verification is required, especially for a reservation containing children.

Which airports offer TSA Gateside?

TSA's visible airport list showed the following 13 airports when checked on September 11, 2026:

There is a current inconsistency on TSA's own web pages. The canonical page's summary and expanded airport list show 13 airports, while one FAQ sentence says 14. A separately indexed TSA path has also shown Chicago Midway. Because this rollout is changing, treat the airport selector in the live application portal as the final check for your date. Do not drive to Midway, or any airport absent from the selector, based only on an old list or search snippet.

TSA describes this as an initial phase and says more airports will be added. This page will be updated when the canonical list changes clearly.

What happens at the airport checkpoint?

Bring an ID from TSA's current acceptable identification list. A REAL ID-compliant state card is one option; a passport and several trusted-traveler cards are also on the list. Check the list again before the visit because TSA says accepted documents can change.

Go to a TSA PreCheck lane and tell the document checker that you have Gateside approval. Touchless ID lanes cannot be used for this program. If PreCheck is closed, an officer may send you to a standard lane.

Every visitor still undergoes security screening. The same prohibited-item and carry-on limits apply, so check TSA's What Can I Bring directory before packing. Leave gifts unwrapped when the contents may need inspection, and do not bring a large collection of liquids simply because you are not flying.

Airport code-of-conduct rules also apply. A pass can be revoked, and a visitor can be asked to leave for violating security or local requirements.

Can you meet an international arrival at the gate?

Do not promise an international gate reunion. Many passengers arriving from abroad are routed from the aircraft into a controlled customs and immigration path before reaching the public arrivals hall. A Gateside visitor cannot enter a federal inspection area or interrupt that route.

There are exceptions in airport design and for flights arriving from a foreign preclearance airport, but those details vary by flight and terminal. Ask the arrival airport where a Gateside visitor can wait for that exact flight. For a normal international arrival, plan to meet after customs unless the airport confirms otherwise.

Domestic arrivals are simpler, but terminal access still matters. At a large airport such as DFW or LAX, entering the wrong secure area may leave you on the wrong side of an inter-terminal connection. Check the airline, flight number and arrival terminal before choosing a checkpoint.

Taking children through TSA Gateside

Children can accompany an eligible parent or guardian, but each child must be added through the add visitor option. The adult should expect to open the live portal dashboard at the checkpoint so the officer can verify everyone on the reservation.

The program page does not publish one universal party-size promise beyond that process. If several relatives want to greet one passenger, do not assume the whole group will be approved. Airport daily limits still apply, and crowded gate areas need to remain usable for ticketed passengers.

For an unaccompanied minor, follow the airline's process first. Airlines can require a parent or guardian to use an airline-issued escort pass and remain at the gate until departure. Gateside does not change the airline's custody, check-in or handoff rules.

Gateside, an airline gate pass and an airport visitor pass are different

These options can sound interchangeable, but they solve different problems.

At San Diego, for example, TSA Gateside and SAN Pass are independent programs with different eligibility and application timing. If Gateside is unavailable, search the airport's official site for a current visitor-pass program rather than assuming every airport follows the same process.

Do not buy a refundable flight solely to create checkpoint access and then cancel it. That workaround appears often in public discussions, but it is not the visitor process TSA has published. Use Gateside, the airport's program or an airline-approved escort route.

Helping an older traveler or a passenger with a disability

Gateside can let an approved relative remain with a traveler beyond security, but it is not a substitute for required airline assistance. The U.S. Department of Transportation says airlines must provide prompt wheelchair or guided assistance to a passenger with a disability who requests it, including movement from the terminal entrance to the departure gate or from an arriving aircraft to baggage claim or pickup.

Request the appropriate help from the airline early, then identify the passenger to staff at the airport. Ask for guided assistance rather than a wheelchair when wayfinding is the actual need. Use Gateside as an extra layer of familiar support when approved. Do not present it as a reason to omit an accessibility request from the booking.

Plan the airport handoff before leaving home

An approved pass does not tell you where to park, which terminal to enter or how long the checkpoint will take. Build a simple handoff plan:

1. Confirm the airline, flight number, terminal and scheduled time on the airline's own app.
2. Check the airport map for the correct checkpoint and whether the gate area is connected after security.
3. Save a landside meeting point in case approval changes or the checkpoint cannot be used.
4. Allow time for parking, terminal transport and screening. Do not arrive at the scheduled landing time.
5. Carry only checkpoint-compliant items.
6. Keep the traveler's phone number, airline assistance details and a written fallback meeting point.

For an arrival, remember that landing time is not meeting time. Taxiing, a remote gate, deplaning, immigration and baggage can add substantial time. Follow live flight status, but do not crowd the gate before the arriving flight is assigned there.

Mobile access, the Gateside dashboard and Roaming eSIM

TSA may require the visitor to display a live portal dashboard, so airport Wi-Fi should not be the only connection plan. Log in before joining the line, keep the phone charged and know the account's sign-in method. The approval itself does not guarantee mobile service inside a terminal.

An overseas traveler arriving in the United States may also need data for flight changes, terminal maps, ground transport and messages to the person waiting.
