Emirates US extra-bag fees changed on September 8, 2026
Emirates has a new additional checked-baggage price table for US routes on tickets issued on or after September 8, 2026. The change is not a fee for the baggage already included with your fare. It applies when you need an extra piece beyond the allowance shown on your ticket.
For a first extra bag, the new advance prices range from US$106 to US$298, depending on the route group. Buying at the airport costs more in every new-table example, from US$125 to US$350. Check the ticket issue date before comparing prices because tickets issued on or before September 7 remain under the older table.

What changed for tickets issued from September 8
Emirates' Optional Services page separates its additional-piece charges by ticket issue date. The newer section is headed for travel from or to the Americas, but every route row in that table begins with USA. This guide therefore applies the displayed prices only to the US route groups Emirates names.
The advance column covers purchases through the Emirates website, contact centers or retail offices. The airport column applies when you pay at check-in.

These figures are for the first additional piece. Emirates publishes cumulative prices for two to five additional bags, so do not multiply the first-piece figure and assume it is the total. Use the table for budgeting, then confirm the amount attached to your itinerary before paying.
There is a source mismatch worth knowing about. Emirates' separate buy extra baggage page still displays an older broad price table. The dated Optional Services table is the clearer source for the September 8 cutoff, but your live Manage Booking quote or airline confirmation is the practical price check for a specific ticket.
Ten questions to settle before paying
1. Does the cutoff use my ticket date or travel date?
It uses the ticket issue date in the displayed Emirates table. A ticket issued on September 7, 2026 falls under the older section even if the flight is later. A ticket issued on September 8 falls under the new section.
If your booking was reissued after a change, ask Emirates which issue date controls the baggage purchase. The public table does not explain every reissue case, so do not rely on the date of the original reservation alone.
2. Is this charge part of my free checked allowance?
No. It is the price of an additional piece beyond the free allowance on your ticket. Emirates says the included allowance varies by route, fare and cabin. Read it in Manage Booking or on the e-ticket before deciding that you need another bag.
The piece concept generally applies on routes to and from the Americas and Africa. Other routes can use a total weight allowance. That difference changes whether you are buying another piece, more weight, or paying an overweight charge.
3. How much is the first extra bag on my route?
Match both ends of the Emirates itinerary to the seven rows above. A ticket between the USA and Europe, for example, shows US$170 in advance or US$200 at the airport under the new table. USA to South Asia shows US$213 in advance or US$250 at the airport.
Do not classify a journey only by its Dubai connection. Use the origin and destination grouping on the ticket, then confirm the quote with Emirates. If the table and your booking disagree, get the airline's answer before arriving with an extra bag.
4. When can I buy an extra bag in advance?
Emirates says eligible passengers can buy extra allowance online up to four hours before departure, generally for as many as five additional pieces. Availability and route exclusions can apply. Buy earlier than the cutoff if the booking offers the option, and save the receipt offline.
The excess-baggage terms say advance purchases are available only when all flights in the booking are operated by Emirates. If the option is missing, contact the airline instead of assuming the airport will honor the advance rate.
5. How heavy can a purchased extra piece be?
Under the piece concept, a purchased piece can weigh up to 23kg in Economy or Premium Economy and up to 32kg in Business or First Class. Emirates does not accept a single checked item weighing more than 32kg.
An extra-piece purchase does not make an overweight suitcase compliant. Weigh each bag separately and check the size rules. Special equipment can have its own acceptance conditions even when its weight looks ordinary.
6. Can I split a weight allowance across several bags?
Where the weight concept applies, Emirates says you can check as many bags as you like as long as their combined weight stays within your class allowance. Each item must weigh less than 32kg. Under the piece concept, the number and per-piece limit shown on the ticket matter instead.
The public purchase page does not confirm that separate passengers can pool their allowances. Ask Emirates before treating a family booking as one shared total. In either system, one heavy suitcase cannot borrow capacity from another bag to exceed the individual-item limit.
7. Is one slightly overweight bag the same as buying another piece?
No. An overweight fee and an additional-piece fee solve different problems. A purchased piece gives you another compliant bag; it does not raise the weight limit of an existing bag.
Compare the live prices before choosing. Moving items into another bag can be useful only if that second bag is included or purchased and both pieces stay within their individual limits. Restricted-item rules still apply regardless of available kilograms.
8. Which airline's baggage rules apply on a codeshare?
Do not assume the Emirates table covers a flight operated by another airline. Emirates says baggage allowances can differ on codeshare and interline itineraries, and its advance-purchase terms require Emirates-operated flights.
Check the operating carrier for every segment, not only the flight number printed first. The Emirates codeshare FAQ and your e-ticket should identify the operator. Ask the ticketing airline to resolve conflicting allowances in writing.
9. Can I use Cash+Miles for an extra bag?
Emirates says eligible passengers can use Cash+Miles to reduce the cash cost of excess baggage. The payment choice shown in Manage Booking depends on the itinerary and account.
Compare the cash and Miles choices shown for your booking. A forum example or another traveler's redemption does not establish the value or availability for your flight.
10. Can I transfer or refund an unused baggage purchase?
The allowance is issued to the named passenger and is not transferable. Emirates' terms allow changes when the passenger changes the flight or date, subject to availability and the original service conditions.
Refunds are limited. The terms cover cases such as an Emirates flight change or cancellation where the service cannot be supplied, death or serious illness with proof, and a qualifying US itinerary canceled within 24 hours of booking. A voluntary cancellation or unused purchase is otherwise not refundable. Eligible applications are made after the flight and within three months after the last flight in the itinerary. Keep the receipt and use Emirates' refund form.
