United Canada routes for 2027: what travelers need to know

United Airlines has announced three new cross-border routes for summer 2027: Newark to St. John's, Denver to Ottawa and Denver to Quebec City. The St. John's service is planned to operate daily from June through September on an Embraer E175.

The announcement is real, but it is not a complete timetable. United and its partner Air Canada have not yet published route-level dates, flight numbers, departure times or aircraft for the two Denver routes. Check the exact itinerary before arranging a separate flight, hotel or car around any of the new services.

The short answer: Newark to St. John's has the clearest plan, with daily E175 service from June through September 2027. Denver to Ottawa and Denver to Quebec City are confirmed as new summer routes, but their dates, operating days, times and aircraft remain unpublished. Treat the booking record as the final authority once a specific flight appears.

This guide was checked on October 18, 2026, two days after the announcement.

Air Canada and United announced the routes together on October 16. Their release also says United will increase Washington Dulles to Quebec City service and raise daily seats between Denver and Winnipeg by 65 percent. Those are capacity changes, not additional new routes in this guide.

The carriers also said they agreed to renew and expand their transborder joint business agreement, subject to regulatory approval. That approval note applies to the proposed agreement. The announcement does not label the three route launches themselves as approval-dependent, and travelers should not treat the distinction as a promise that a schedule cannot change.

Newark to St. John's has the most detail

The St. John's airport announcement reported by NTV says United plans one flight each day from June through September 2027 using an Embraer E175. The route reconnects the two airports after a gap of more than a decade.

Daily service is useful for a Newfoundland trip because it gives passengers more date flexibility than a two or three day weekly pattern. It does not remove disruption risk. A traveler connecting at Newark should compare a single through-ticket with a separate booking and leave a sensible margin for the process shown in the final itinerary.

The published material does not give an exact June start date, a September end date or a timetable. It also does not promise that every day's flight will use the same aircraft. Those are booking details to confirm, not blanks to fill from a schedule aggregator.

Denver to Ottawa and Quebec City need another check

Ottawa airport confirms that Denver will become United's fourth destination from Canada's capital. Quebec City airport welcomed the Denver link alongside more Washington service and year-round Chicago flying. Neither airport's October 16 material provides the new Denver routes' dates, frequencies or times.

That limits what can be planned now. A Denver connection might eventually shorten some western United States journeys, but the value depends on the operating day and the onward schedule. A Quebec City traveler should also check the airport code carefully. YQB is Quebec City Jean Lesage International Airport, not Montreal Trudeau.

Wait for a bookable, direction-specific itinerary before paying for a separate connection. A broad “summer 2027” announcement does not establish that a flight operates on a particular June or September date.

Where passengers clear United States entry checks

Ottawa currently has United States preclearance. YOW says a passenger on a direct United States flight completes Canadian security screening, then clears U.S. Customs and Border Protection before reaching the gate. During its published peak periods, YOW advises U.S.-bound passengers to arrive two hours before departure.

The current CBP preclearance list includes Ottawa but not St. John's or Quebec City. Based on today's facilities, YYT to Newark and YQB to Denver passengers would complete U.S. entry processing at the first U.S. airport, while YOW to Denver passengers would arrive after preclearance. Recheck this before travel because facilities and procedures can change before summer 2027.

On the return to Canada, follow the arrival process shown for the airport and itinerary. Entry permission depends on the traveler's citizenship, documents and circumstances, not on the existence of a nonstop route.

Connections, codeshares and baggage

The announcement describes access to more than 1,200 connecting itineraries across the Air Canada and United networks. That is a network figure, not a guarantee that every origin and destination can be issued on one ticket.

Before buying, confirm three things:

  1. The receipt contains every flight in the journey.
  2. The booking names the operating carrier for each segment.
  3. The baggage allowance and final tagged airport match the planned trip.

On a single ticket, the airlines can coordinate the itinerary under its conditions. Separate tickets can require bag collection, a new check-in and another security screening, and the onward airline may not protect a missed flight. Do not assume the Air Canada flight number on a codeshare means Air Canada operates the aircraft or sets the airport process.

United's bag allowances vary by cabin, fare, status, route and traveler. Read the baggage line in the exact reservation instead of applying a fee or carry-on rule from another United trip.

Mobile data for a Canada-United States trip

An OpenSim Canada eSIM is the direct country option for a trip that stays in St. John's, Ottawa, Quebec City or elsewhere in Canada. A traveler who also needs mobile data in the United States can compare it with the USA and Canada eSIM.

The practical difference is the itinerary. A Canada-only package avoids buying broader coverage that will not be used. A verified two-country package can keep one data profile available on both sides of the border for airline alerts, maps and pickup messages. Open the live package before checkout and check the data allowance, validity, listed networks, speed, activation rule, hotspot terms and top-up eligibility. Not every package is reloadable.

An eSIM provides mobile data on the ground. It does not supply inflight Wi-Fi, speed up immigration, protect a separate ticket or guarantee reception inside an airport. Check phone compatibility and the installation timing guide while reliable Wi-Fi is available.

Ten questions about United's new Canada routes

Which new Canada routes did United announce for 2027?

United announced Newark to St. John's, Denver to Ottawa and Denver to Quebec City. All three are described as summer 2027 services.

When will the new United Canada flights start?

Newark to St. John's is planned for June through September 2027. The public announcement does not give exact dates for that route or for the two Denver routes.

Are the new flights on sale?

The announcement does not say that all three United routes are on sale, and it does not publish flight numbers. Search the exact city pair and dates, then verify both directions before arranging anything non-refundable.

Will Newark to St. John's operate every day?

That is the current plan. St. John's airport says the seasonal flight will operate daily from June through September, but passengers should still check their own date in United's live schedule.

What aircraft will United use to St. John's?

The airport announcement names an Embraer E175. Aircraft can change for operational reasons, so use the seat map attached to the final booking for a particular flight.

What aircraft will fly Denver to Ottawa and Quebec City?

United has not published an aircraft type for either new Denver route. Do not infer it from another Canadian service or from the St. John's E175 plan.

Where do Ottawa passengers clear U.S. customs?

Ottawa has U.S. preclearance, so a direct YOW to Denver passenger currently clears CBP before departure. YOW advises U.S.-bound passengers to allow two hours during published peak periods.

Can I connect beyond Newark or Denver?

Yes, both are United hubs with onward flights. Compare the complete itinerary, connection time, terminal process and ticket protection rather than assuming every possible connection is sensible.

Can Air Canada sell a United-operated flight?

It may sell eligible codeshare or joint itineraries. The reservation must identify the operating carrier. Airline operation, lounge access, mileage credit and baggage treatment should each be checked under the ticket's actual terms.

Which OpenSim plan matches a United Canada itinerary?

Use the Canada page for a Canada-only stay. Compare USA and Canada when the same trip needs data in both countries, then verify the selected package's country list and terms before purchase.

Your final route check

  • Confirm a flight exists on the exact date in both directions.
  • Read the operating carrier, airport codes and local departure times.
  • Keep connections on one ticket where the price and schedule work.
  • Check the fare's bag, seat, change and refund conditions.
  • Recheck the customs process before departure.
  • Save the itinerary, passport details and arrival plan offline.

Evidence for the three United routes

The route announcement and partnership wording come from Air Canada's October 16 release and the Ottawa airport publication. St. John's airport supplied the daily June-to-September and E175 details. CBP and YOW supplied the current preclearance guidance.

Public traveler discussions were reviewed for questions about schedule availability, aircraft, codeshares, baggage, customs and connections. They were used to shape the questions, not as evidence for route facts or airline policy.

We will update this page when United publishes a route-level timetable, puts the flights on sale, changes a season or frequency, or confirms the first operation. The airline's live booking and flight-status records remain the final authority for an individual trip.
