Les Utopiales runs in Nantes from October 29 to November 1, 2026. It brings science-fiction films, books, scientific discussions, exhibitions and games into the same festival. For a first visit, choose one session you would regret missing, buy the right day ticket or pass, and leave the rest of the day flexible.

Two details matter before you set off: Dune and Solaris cinema sessions need a separate same-day reservation, and renovation work has moved both the festival entrance and the on-site ticket office. An admission pass alone does not settle either question.

The city's October holiday guide, updated October 12, includes this year's "Perspectives" edition. The practical information below was checked on October 13. Times are local to Nantes.

Which Utopiales ticket fits your visit?

The current 2026 French ticket page lists these prices:

Your planFull-price admissionWhat to check
One public festival dayEUR15Buy for the date you will attend
Saturday and SundayEUR30 weekend passOctober 31 and November 1
All four public daysEUR52 passOctober 29-November 1
October 28 pre-opening with La Bonne AubergeEUR10Separate evening ticket
October 31 games eveningEUR8Not included in ordinary day tickets or passes
October 31 cinema eveningEUR10Separate ticket; availability applies

Reduced day, weekend and four-day prices are EUR8, EUR16 and EUR25. The listed eligibility includes under-18s, students, job seekers and certain benefit recipients, with proof required. Check the category you qualify for rather than assuming every young traveler gets a discount.

Under-six children enter free but still need a ticket and an accompanying adult. Collect their free admission document at the ticket office with proof of age. A Pass Culture reservation is not itself an entrance ticket.

For two full-price days, two EUR15 day tickets cost the same as the EUR30 weekend pass. Four separate days total EUR60, so the EUR52 four-day pass saves EUR8 if you will use all four. These comparisons exclude paid evenings and travel costs.

Use the dated French page for 2026 prices. The English ticket page still contains an older Saturday-November-1 schedule and different evening prices. It is useful background, but those entries do not match the current edition.

Reserve cinema sessions before arriving

Page 43 of the official 2026 programme requires same-day reservations for films in Dune and Solaris. They are free, but you must already hold a festival ticket or pass.

  1. Have each person's member code ready. It is printed below their name on the ticket or pass.
  2. Open the festival's cinema-reservation section at 8am on the day of the screening. On-site reservations open with the festival doors.
  3. Select the screening and enter one member code per person.
  4. Present the festival ticket's QR code at the room. Arrive at least ten minutes early; a late arrival can lose the reserved place.

Cancel unused reservations through the member area. For a full screening, check for released places or ask about the standby queue; admission is not guaranteed.

Keep the confirmation and QR code available on your phone before leaving your accommodation. Set an alarm for booking time if cinema is the main reason for your visit. A relaxed late breakfast works better after that step than during it.

Do not schedule a panel that finishes at the same moment your film begins. You still need to leave the room, find the next entrance and meet its arrival requirement. Pick a second-choice activity so a full screening does not leave a two-hour hole in the day.

Choose a route through the programme

The online agenda has filters for activities and thematic routes, including an introduction to science fiction, science, storytelling, the living world and youth programming. There is also an LSF filter for French Sign Language interpretation.

Your main interestStart withLeave space for
FilmsOne reserved screeningAn exhibition or discussion between screenings
Books and ideasA named author or scientific discussionBrowsing and a meal without another timed commitment
Games and meeting other visitorsThe games programmeCheck whether a particular game needs registration
A family outingThe youth filter and each activity's age guidanceA shorter visit and a backup if an activity fills
An evening after workA specific evening eventIts separate ticket and return journey

For a one-day visit, two fixed commitments are enough to build around. You can explore between them without treating every interesting title as another appointment. Read the description, language and room location before deciding that two activities fit together.

International guests do not mean every discussion is in English. Film listings distinguish versions and subtitles: VOSTF means original-language audio with French subtitles; VF means a French-language version. Check the individual film or session, particularly if French is not your strongest language.

Where to enter during the renovation

The festival is at La Cite des Congres, 5 rue de Valmy. The current access page directs visitors to the Grande Halle forecourt, rather than the Grand Auditorium entrance described in some older listings.

The on-site ticket office is outside the main building, at the Nantes Metropole exhibition centre opposite. Buying online can save that detour, although families collecting free under-six tickets may still need the ticket office.

The festival opens at 8:15am on Thursday, October 29, and 8:30am on the other three public days. The games area opens at 10am; the youth space at 9:45am. An early building opening does not mean every activity starts then.

The programme also uses nearby venues, including Le Lieu Unique and Les Ateliers de Bitche. Save the festival map and check the venue for each session. Give yourself time to walk between buildings, especially with luggage, a stroller or limited mobility.

The hero photograph shows the venue historically, before the current works. Use the festival's current signs and map for the entrance, not the photograph.

Taking children or arranging access support

The youth programme includes games, workshops, reading and films. Workshop registration is on site at 9:45am for morning activities and 1:45pm for afternoon activities. Unreserved activities remain subject to capacity. The Professor Zutop sessions are listed from age ten.

Choose according to your child's interests and attention span. A scientific talk may suit a ten-year-old who wants to ask questions but not a younger sibling who needs to move around. Keep one parent free to step out rather than assuming that every listed family activity suits every age.

For a vegetarian meal, check the actual menu and opening time before planning around it. Leave a lunch break away from your next reserved screening; browsing books or watching part of a games session can fill spare time more comfortably than adding another fixed booking.

The accessibility page describes priority-access cards with supporting documentation, a quiet room and limited wheelchair loans. It also says some 2026 access documents are not yet available. Ask the team at [email protected] about the specific route, room or support you need before traveling.

Check the LSF-marked sessions individually. Do not assume interpretation or the same access arrangement applies to every event in the neighbourhood.

Getting to the festival from the station or airport

You do not need a rental car just to reach the festival. The organizer describes a short walk from Nantes station along the Saint-Felix canal. With bags or an access requirement, allow more time than the advertised five-minute walk.

Tram 1 serves Duchesse Anne - Chateau des ducs de Bretagne. Busway 4 serves Cite des Congres, directly beside the event. Use the current journey planner for other routes rather than relying on an old festival bus list.

Your valid Utopiales ticket or pass gives access to the Naolib network on its valid day, according to the organizer. That benefit excludes the airport shuttle, TER trains and park-and-ride. Keep the ticket available during the journey.

For airport arrivals, Naolib's current airport guide distinguishes two options:

  • The airport shuttle serves Cite des Congres, the station and Hotel Dieu. Its ticket is EUR10, including weekends. The published seasonal frequency is every 20 minutes through October and every 30 minutes from November.
  • Bus 38 connects the airport with Pirmil and uses ordinary network tickets. Tram 2 or 3 provides an onward connection. This involves a transfer rather than the shuttle's direct service.

The shuttle's station stop moved to bus-station platform A on March 30, 2026. For a November 1 departure, check the winter timetable rather than assuming October frequency continues through the final festival day. The operator's estimated 20-minute station-airport journey is traffic-dependent; allow a separate airport check-in buffer.

Staying for the Star Trek or games evening

The Star Trek anniversary evening is on Saturday, October 31, in Dune, starting at 8:30pm. It costs EUR10 and is outside ordinary passes. The programme includes an original-series episode, Star Trek: The Motion Picture and First Contact, listed in original versions with French subtitles.

Plan for a late finish: the event's description and the printed programme say 2am, although the web timing field says 11:45pm. Recheck the organizer's latest timing before arranging your return; do not book a ride around the earlier field without confirmation.

The games evening has its own EUR8 ticket. Decide which evening you want before buying a daytime pass and assuming it covers everything. If you will stay late, check the last usable service from your actual stop, not just a general claim that Nantes transport runs late at weekends.

Useful apps and mobile data for the visit

The official programme links to the festival app for favorites, cinema reservations and change alerts. Download it through the organizer's link. Keep a saved copy of your selected sessions and map in case you cannot open the app later.

The Naolib app provides journey planning, departures, traffic information and mobile tickets. A purchased mTicket needs activation before boarding. Your festival admission, cinema reservation and transport ticket are different documents, so keep them clearly labeled.

Mobile data is useful for the morning reservation, a changed room, a transport check or messaging someone who has gone to another venue. OpenSim's France eSIM plans can suit an unlocked, compatible phone when you need a separate travel allowance. The October 13 catalog listed a reloadable 5GB, 30-day plan at USD5.40 with Orange among its named network details. Confirm the current plan at purchase; this is not a guaranteed speed or coverage claim.

That is a practical alternative if your usual plan charges for France data or you want a separate allowance. If your existing plan already includes enough usable roaming data, buying another plan may add little. Neither option guarantees access to a full cinema session, app availability or an uncongested network.

Check your phone's eSIM compatibility and installation timing before leaving. The travel data calculator helps estimate your allowance. For a longer family stay, use the separate France with kids guide rather than trying to fit the whole country into the festival weekend.
