Audience at Gartenbaukino during the Viennale in October 2012

Viennale runs in Vienna from October 22 to November 3, 2026. Ticket sales open Saturday, October 17, at 10am Vienna time. If you want to add a couple of films to a city break, choose your screenings before the sale and check their language, venue and collection instructions. You do not need to build your whole trip around a large ticket bundle.

The organizer plans to publish the complete programme on October 13 at 8pm. This guide was checked earlier that day, before the release. The advance booking details below are confirmed, but use the released programme for the final screening schedule.

The guide collection page gives Gartenbaukino's address as Parkring 12, near U3 Stubentor. Printed guide collection and buying a cinema ticket are separate tasks.

Ticket prices: how many films will you really see?

The organizer's 2026 price announcement lists these per-ticket rates:

QuantityStandard price per ticketEligible reduced price per ticket
Single ticketEUR11.50EUR10.50
From ten ticketsEUR11.00EUR10.00
From twenty ticketsEUR10.50EUR9.50

The listed reductions apply to specified memberships and customers, including O1 Club, Standard subscribers, Erste Bank customers and Austrian Filmmuseum members, with proof. Check the purchase conditions rather than assuming a student card automatically gives that particular advance price.

Two standard single tickets total EUR23. That is a reasonable starting point for someone spending only a few days in Vienna. A cheaper per-ticket rate is not a saving if you buy more screenings than your trip allows.

Start with your available afternoons and evenings, then fit films into them. Keep enough time for meals and other things you came to Vienna to do. A film that looks inexpensive on a bundle calculation can still cost you an afternoon you wanted elsewhere.

What a Viennale voucher does and does not reserve

The official voucher shop lists a ten-ticket block at EUR110 and a twenty-ticket block at EUR210. Each entitles the holder to that number of festival screening tickets, subject to availability. Buying the voucher does not secure a seat for a specific film.

Redemption starts October 17 through the Gartenbaukino advance office, the booking telephone number or the website. The shop says vouchers can be used at festival cinemas from October 23. Online redemption requires an account, and a voucher can be redeemed in stages rather than all at once.

The voucher is not valid for retrospective screenings at the Austrian Filmmuseum after November 3. Do not buy a festival block for a later Vienna visit on the assumption it covers the extended retrospective.

For a group, decide who is booking which films before buying. Save the confirmation and ask the box office how collection works if different people will attend different screenings. A shared order should not leave one person without the information needed to collect their ticket.

How to approach the October 17 sale

The presale page lists online, Gartenbaukino and telephone booking on +43 1 526 594 769. Phone sales run October 17-November 3, 10am-8pm, by credit card. Gartenbaukino opens 10am-8pm October 17-21 and 10am-4pm October 22.

Have your screening list, payment method and any voucher ready. Add alternatives for films with only one suitable showing. Use the official website's instructions if a waiting room appears; do not rely on a queue-opening time reported for a previous year.

The website still contains some 2025 login text. The dated 2026 presale information says October 17, not October 11. Check the edition and date before acting on an embedded message or an old search result.

Collect tickets at Gartenbaukino or, during the festival, at the cinemas. Cinema collection opens thirty minutes beforehand for the current screening only. Allow time to collect your ticket before the film starts.

Read the current conditions at checkout before committing. The linked general terms page still contains several 2025 dates, so do not infer a new 2026 refund, transfer or seating rule from those older entries.

If a screening sells out, make a second plan

Standby numbers are issued at the cinema box office from thirty minutes before a sold-out screening. A number does not guarantee admission.

First look for another showing that fits your dates. If standby is your only option, leave that part of the day flexible and decide how long you are willing to wait. It is better to have a nearby alternative than to book a tightly timed dinner assuming that both the queue and the screening will work out.

Choose one must-see film and one easier backup for each day. Historical visitors have described very different experiences between highly sought-after titles and other films, but that does not establish which 2026 screening will sell out or your chance of a seat.

Check subtitles for the exact screening

Viennale is an international festival, but that does not make every screening accessible to an English-speaking visitor. Original language and subtitle language are separate details.

Check the version next to the showing you intend to book. An English-subtitled version of a film on one date does not prove the same version is scheduled on another. If you are booking for someone else, confirm what they can comfortably follow before choosing seats.

The 2026 youth programme illustrates the difference: its selected films include English-subtitled screenings and a German-subtitled screening of Low Expectations. This is a reason to inspect individual listings, not a rule that all festival films use one subtitle language.

That page also says the limited Holidays Pass sale ended September 30. Do not plan an October purchase around the advertised EUR20 youth bundle. Ask about currently available tickets for the selected films instead.

Choose films first, then group your cinema journeys

The festival cinema list names five venues in central Vienna:

CinemaAddressUseful underground station
GartenbaukinoParkring 12U3 Stubentor or U4 Stadtpark
Stadtkino im KunstlerhausAkademiestrasse 13U1/U4 Karlsplatz
UraniaUraniastrasse 1U1/U4 Schwedenplatz
Austrian FilmmuseumAugustinerstrasse 1U1/U4 Karlsplatz
METRO KinokulturhausJohannesgasse 4U1/U3 Stephansplatz or Karlsplatz

A central accommodation base can make these journeys simpler, but choose it against your whole Vienna itinerary and budget. You do not need an unverified "festival hotel" recommendation to decide whether a room is near your booked cinema.

For two films in one day, compare their finish times and venues before paying. Add time for a possible discussion, leaving the auditorium, ticket collection and the next journey. If the connection only works when everything finishes precisely on time, choose a different screening.

The organizer has announced a EUR6 repeat of the opening film, Forever...Forever, on October 22 at 9:30pm. That is a specific public screening to consider once booking opens, not a promise of access to the opening gala. Check the ticket listing and your return journey before making it your first-night plan.

Airport arrivals during Vienna's rail works

Do not copy a normal-service S7-to-Wien-Mitte route from an older city guide. The Vienna Tourist Board's current airport notice describes works affecting the inner-city rail route through the festival period.

The current alternatives include REX7 to Wien Hauptbahnhof, a shortened S7 route to St. Marx, and CAT's replacement bus to Wien Mitte. CAT's city check-in at Wien Mitte is unavailable during the replacement period. Choose the route against your accommodation or cinema, then check the actual departure and transfer.

For a Gartenbaukino booking after arrival, leave room for baggage collection and the trip into town. A published train or bus journey time is only part of that journey. Avoid a first screening that depends on your flight, baggage and transfer all running without delay.

The WienMobil app supports route planning and public-transport ticket purchases, with German and English interfaces. Keep transport tickets separate from festival confirmations. Neither a cinema ticket nor a mobile-data plan replaces the fare for your journey.

Access requirements and practical preparation

Wheelchair tickets are sold by phone or at box offices, not online; the companion's ticket is free. Ask about your specific venue and screening before booking rather than assuming every seat or route meets your needs.

Save your chosen cinemas and accommodation in your map app. Keep the booking confirmation, collection instructions and a small screening list available offline. Put your phone on silent in the cinema and check any programme change before the next journey rather than during the film.

For a solo visit, one screening followed by an unhurried meal can be a better first day than a full run of back-to-back films. For a family trip, check the actual age and language guidance and allow a way to leave early. A festival label alone does not make a film suitable for a child.

Mobile data for booking and moving between cinemas

Data is useful when you need to open your booking, check a changed airport connection or tell a friend which cinema you are heading to. OpenSim's Austria eSIM plans can provide a separate travel allowance on an unlocked, compatible phone.

The October 13 catalog listed a reloadable 5GB, 30-day Austria plan at USD4.76, with 3 and a1.net among its named network details. Check the current plan at purchase. The catalog does not establish guaranteed speed at a cinema, a priority ticket queue or a guaranteed successful booking.

This can suit someone whose usual plan charges for Austria data or who wants a separate allowance for the trip. If your existing plan already includes enough usable roaming data, another purchase may not be necessary. Keep confirmations offline whichever connection you use.

Before departure, check phone compatibility, when to install your travel eSIM and the travel data calculator. For a longer trip with children, the separate Austria with kids guide covers country-level family planning without turning this film guide into another destination overview.
