Uzbekistan visa-free for Indians announced: what to verify

Uzbekistan officially announced a 30-day visa-free regime for Indian citizens on August 30, 2026. The announcement is real, but it is not yet a complete boarding instruction. When this guide was checked later the same day, Uzbekistan's operational visa page and India's visa-facility table still showed the previous eVisa route for Indian ordinary passport holders.

The presidential statement does not give an effective date, decree number, entry-point list or re-entry rule. It also does not say what an Indian traveler with an approved eVisa should do. Until the operational pages and airline document systems reflect the change, keep any valid eVisa and ask the airline to verify the exact passport and travel date before departure.

The traveler decision: treat the 30-day exemption as an official policy announcement, but do not arrive without a visa solely because a news headline says the change is immediate. Check the Uzbek Foreign Ministry, the Uzbekistan Embassy in India, India's Ministry of External Affairs and the operating airline. Save the answer with the booking.

The official Uzbek presidential statement says the two countries agreed to introduce a 30-day visa-free regime for Indian citizens. It was published after talks between President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tashkent.

The same statement says the parties decided to increase direct flights to 14 a week. It does not publish a route timetable, so do not assume that a preferred city or travel date has gained a new flight until an airline lists it.

The India-Uzbekistan joint statement provides the wider diplomatic context. Neither primary page reviewed for this article supplies the implementation details an airline check-in agent needs: the start date, eligible passport types, number of entries, permitted border points and treatment of an eVisa already issued.

That missing layer is why the answer is not simply "yes, board without a visa." A policy can be official while the systems used at check-in still show the old rule.

What has not changed on the operational pages yet

Uzbekistan's Foreign Ministry visa page still lists India among nationalities eligible for the electronic visa. The page also contains separate wording about visa-free travel for Indian diplomatic passport holders. It had not added Indian ordinary passports to its general visa-free list when checked.

India's Ministry of External Affairs visa-facility table also continued to show Uzbekistan under eVisa rather than visa-free entry. The Uzbekistan Embassy in India consular page still pointed Indian travelers toward the electronic-visa process.

Those pages can lag a newly announced decision. Their current wording does not disprove the presidential statement. It does mean a traveler should obtain an operational answer before relying on the exemption.

Use the official Uzbekistan eVisa domain at e-visa.gov.uz if the old route remains necessary. The government's eVisa guidance says its process should stop and tell an applicant that no visa is needed when the selected nationality qualifies. That behavior can become a useful cross-check after the new rule is loaded, but it is not a substitute for a published effective date.

A safe document check before booking or boarding

Run this check before buying a non-refundable flight, then repeat it within 72 hours of departure:

1. Open the Uzbek Foreign Ministry visa page and look for India in the ordinary-passport visa-free list.
2. Check the Uzbekistan Embassy in India for a notice naming the start date and eligible passport type.
3. Check India's Ministry of External Affairs table for the same change.
4. Ask the operating airline to verify the passport and journey in its current travel-document system.
5. If the airline still requires an eVisa, ask whether a dated official notice is enough or whether the visa must remain attached to the booking.
6. Save the airline response and official pages as PDFs or screenshots for the airport.

Do not cancel an approved eVisa because the policy may make it unnecessary later. Keeping it does not force a traveler to use it, while cancelling it can remove the only document that the airline's current system recognizes.

Avoid websites that imitate an official government address. A paid application intermediary cannot decide when Uzbekistan's new exemption begins.

What a 30-day announcement does not answer

The phrase "30-day visa-free regime" leaves several practical questions open.

Do not turn silence into permission. Ask the responsible authority when the journey depends on one of these points.

Registration after arrival still matters

Visa-free entry does not remove Uzbekistan's local stay-registration process. The government's guidance for foreign visitors says foreign nationals should register their place of stay within three working days.

Hotels normally register guests. Ask for the confirmation and keep it through departure. If staying in a private home or apartment, the visitor and host need to arrange registration through the designated portal or local authority. Changing accommodation can require a new registration.

Uzbekistan's Interior Ministry notice also describes hotel or territorial-office registration within three days. The visitor page says stays of no more than three working days are exempt, but a short trip that includes a weekend or several addresses can be easy to miscount. Ask the accommodation to confirm the record rather than guessing.

Keep each registration slip or digital confirmation offline. It is a separate requirement from the visa or exemption used to enter.

Should you still apply for an Uzbekistan eVisa?

The answer depends on the travel date and what the official and airline systems show.

Apply or keep the eVisa when

• departure is close and the airline still shows a visa requirement;
• the Uzbek ordinary-passport list has not added India;
• the embassy cannot confirm that the exemption covers the exact travel date; or
• a border crossing or re-entry depends on terms that have not been published.

Rely on the visa-free rule when

• an official operational page gives an effective date before the trip;
• the wording covers the passport type and planned entry point;
• the airline confirms the booking passes its document check; and
• any re-entry or longer-stay question has a written answer.

An application fee already paid may not be refundable merely because the rule changes later. Check the issuing portal's terms before starting a second application or asking an intermediary to cancel the first.

Planning a first Uzbekistan route from India

For a seven to ten-day first visit, Tashkent, Samarkand and Bukhara form a manageable rail route. Adding Khiva usually needs more time or a domestic flight or overnight rail decision. A 30-day permission does not mean the itinerary should fill all 30 days.

Book the first nights and intercity transport with enough margin for a late flight or document check. Save addresses in both English and a locally useful script. Keep the accommodation contacts available because the first hotel will normally start the registration trail.

If the route continues into Kazakhstan or Kyrgyzstan, verify every country's rules separately and obtain Uzbekistan's re-entry answer before leaving. A visa-free arrival in Tashkent does not establish the right to return at a land border.
