Vi free international roaming: check the limits before flying
Vodafone Idea announced free international roaming on September 25, 2026, for selected Indian prepaid, postpaid and enterprise plans. Its Roam-Free benefit can cover up to three trips a year, depending on the plan. Before relying on it, check the entitlement on your own number: an eligible annual recharge does not necessarily give you three trips, a year of overseas data or every advertised country.

The useful change in Vi's announcement is that qualifying customers can claim an included roaming benefit instead of buying a separate pack for that allowance. They keep using their Vi number. Data quotas, outgoing minutes, trip counts and validity still vary.
Which plans include Roam-Free
Vi's current offer page separates eligibility by plan type. These starting prices were checked on September 29, 2026; the eligible plans available to a number can vary by telecom circle.

For prepaid, Vi's FAQ describes one complimentary roaming benefit per eligible annual recharge. It must be claimed through the Vi App during the annual pack's validity. An unclaimed benefit lapses after 365 days. That is a claim window, not the length of the roaming allowance once activated.
Family membership needs a separate check. On eligible postpaid family plans, the primary user and included free secondary members receive their own benefits. Paid additional secondary members are excluded. Benefits cannot be transferred between members, and the primary user activates the benefit for a secondary member.
Check the country list, not just the headline
The launch and main offer advertise coverage across more than 170 countries. The prepaid section of the same offer's FAQ says more than 140 countries. That difference matters if you are choosing a plan for a particular itinerary.
Check each destination and roaming partner under the benefit attached to your number. Include a stopover country if you intend to use mobile data there. A headline country count does not confirm that your particular pack applies, or that every call you make is included.
Save the confirmed allowance, activation date, expiry and charges outside the benefit before leaving India. Vi has not published one quota or roaming duration that applies to every eligible plan.
When a separate OpenSim allowance makes sense
If Vi's included benefit covers your trip, using it may be enough. Keeping the existing number for its eligible calls and messages is a useful reason to retain carrier roaming.
OpenSim is useful when you want a separate, defined data allowance without changing your Indian mobile plan. For example, suppose you are spending two weeks in France and the benefit shown in your Vi App ends earlier. On September 29, OpenSim listed a France plan with 5 GB for 30 days at USD 5.40, with top-up supported for that specific plan. You can find it under Monthly on the France eSIM page.
That is a paid data option to compare with extending Vi roaming. It does not extend your Vi benefit or keep an expired Vi line active. The price can change, and checkout totals may include fees or currency conversion. Confirm any essential hotspot, calling or SMS requirement before buying; the quoted data allowance alone does not establish those features.

Check the included benefit first. Buy extra data only for the days or usage it will not cover. Keep your Vi number's service validity and roaming charges separate from the data budget.
Questions before using Vi roaming abroad
Do I need to buy an international roaming pack before Vi connects abroad?
An eligible Roam-Free customer should first check and claim the included benefit in the Vi App. You may not need to buy a separate pack for the usage it covers. Enabling international roaming service on a line is a separate matter: service access alone does not establish a free data or calling allowance.
Will my existing annual prepaid plan qualify?
Only the eligible annual packs qualify. Check the exact recharge and circle in the Vi App rather than assuming that any 365-day plan includes the offer. Vi's prepaid FAQ also says that separate eligible annual recharges carry their own claimable benefit. It does not turn the whole year into continuous free roaming.
Can a paid family add-on line use the free roaming benefit?
Vi's published family FAQ excludes paid additional secondary members. The primary line and included free secondary members on an eligible family plan qualify. Check which type of member you are before departure; sharing a bill does not mean sharing the primary user's roaming entitlement.
Does activating the service make all calls and data free?
No. The free benefit has its own allowance and validity. Vi's general roaming guidance also distinguishes service activation from usage charges. Check incoming calls, outgoing destinations, SMS and data separately. Do not use your domestic unlimited-data label as an overseas allowance.
Will I receive bank OTPs throughout the year?
The annual claim window does not promise year-round OTP delivery. Confirm incoming-SMS entitlement and international roaming service validity for the entire period you will be abroad, including after the complimentary benefit ends. Keeping your Vi number is useful, but a travel data eSIM cannot receive SMS addressed to that number or renew its service.
Can I activate roaming after arriving in another country?
Vi's general help says international roaming service can be activated through its app or website using Wi-Fi abroad. It recommends doing this before leaving India. Confirm the complimentary benefit and its start time separately. If you have just ported to Vi, finish activating the new line before departure; a roaming setting does not establish that the SIM itself is ready.
What if paying for a pack requires an OTP I cannot receive?
Use a working internet connection to contact Vi's official support and have it check the line's roaming and incoming-SMS status. The free-roaming announcement does not publish a universal recovery method for that situation. Checking and claiming your entitlement before departure reduces the chance of discovering an access problem abroad.
How do I check which countries and networks my benefit covers?
Look up the destination and partner network for your exact benefit in the Vi App or on Vi's site. The general 170-plus-country claim and prepaid FAQ's 140-plus wording are not interchangeable guarantees. Check every country you plan to use, then confirm your phone can connect to the available partner network.
What happens when my data or free roaming period ends?
Vi directs users who exhaust their quota to additional data or roaming packs. After the complimentary period expires, its postpaid FAQ points to Always On or another roaming pack. Always On is not free continuation: Vi's general guidance describes charges for usage after expiry. Confirm the rate on your line before continuing, or arrange a separate data allowance for the remaining days.
Do I need a new SIM or an eSIM-compatible phone for Vi roaming?
Vi says its roaming can work with the existing handset and SIM, subject to compatibility with the destination's partner networks. Roam-Free is not a requirement to install a travel eSIM.
