Opera eSIM launches on Android: free trial and travel limits
Opera launched its travel eSIM service on September 29, 2026, bringing mobile-data purchases into its Android browser. Users in 11 selected markets can claim 3GB for three days without supplying payment details or an email address. Before relying on the trial, check both where you can claim it and where you can use it: those are different lists.

The service is powered by holiday.com. Opera's announcement lists 47 destinations and paid allowances of 3GB, 5GB or 10GB, each valid for 30 days after activation. It gives Android travelers another way to arrange data before departure, especially if they already use Opera.
Who can claim the free 3GB trial
Opera's launch guide says the free offer is available to users located in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Canada, United Arab Emirates, Brazil, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Poland.
The allowance is 3GB in total for three days, not 3GB each day. Open the profile menu in Opera for Android, choose eSIM and follow the claim flow for your destination. A compatible, carrier-unlocked phone is required.
The launch information does not specify a trial closing date, repeat-claim allowance or promotion-stacking rules. Check the offer shown on your own device rather than planning around repeated free claims. Paid plans are available beyond those 11 trial markets.
Check your destination separately
Canada, the UAE and Brazil appear on the free-trial eligibility list but not on Opera's published launch destination list. Japan is also absent from that destination list. Being able to claim an offer at home does not establish coverage for the place you are visiting.
Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore are among the supported destinations. For a trip crossing those borders, check what each purchased plan covers. Opera lets you reuse the installed eSIM and add destination plans; its 47-destination headline does not promise one allowance shared across all 47.
A regional option for a three-country trip
For an eligible three-day stay with modest data use, Opera's free trial is worth checking first. A longer Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore itinerary presents a different decision: separate country allowances or one allowance covering the route.
On September 29, OpenSim's Asia (7 areas) eSIM page listed 5GB for 30 days at USD 14.00, with top-up supported for that specific plan. It covers Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia and Cambodia. Select Monthly to find the quoted package, and confirm the current price before paying.
That regional allowance is useful if your data use will shift between countries. You can spend more of it on the stop where you need it, instead of budgeting a separate allowance for each destination. It is not 5GB per country.
For a single-country holiday, compare the Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore plans instead. Check any essential hotspot or calling requirement on the selected package; a data allowance alone does not confirm those features.
Match the allowance to the itinerary. Opera's free trial can cover a short start to a trip. OpenSim's regional plan gives a defined paid allowance across these seven destinations. Compare the full trip, including the days after a trial ends.
Questions before taking Opera eSIM abroad
What is the eSIM option in Opera for?
It installs a travel-data eSIM on a supported phone. The data can serve maps, messaging and other apps across the phone, not just pages opened in Opera. It still needs a supported mobile network at your destination.
Will Opera eSIM work on my phone?
Opera requires Android 10 or later, eSIM hardware and a carrier-unlocked device. Its setup guide specifies the main Opera Android browser, excluding Opera Mini and Opera GX. Installing a browser cannot add missing eSIM hardware. Our phone compatibility guide explains the checks.
Should I install Opera eSIM before departure?
Yes, while you have a reliable internet connection. Follow the in-browser installation steps, then select the travel eSIM for mobile data and enable its roaming setting at the destination. Opera says paid plans can be activated within 365 days of purchase. That purchase window is separate from the plan's 30 days of service.
Does one Opera plan cover a trip across several countries?
Do not assume that it does. Opera's FAQ describes choosing a destination and adding its data plan to the existing eSIM. Check the coverage attached to each purchase before crossing a border. Keeping one installed profile does not itself give you regional data.
Can I keep my usual number for bank texts?
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, your home line can remain responsible for calls and texts while Opera handles data. Confirm that line's roaming access and charges with your carrier. Turning off its data roaming does not settle calling or SMS fees, and the travel eSIM cannot receive texts addressed to another number by itself.
Does Opera eSIM give me a local phone number?
No. Opera describes it as data-only. If a booking, workplace or local service requires a number that can receive ordinary calls or SMS, arrange that separately. An internet connection and a local mobile number are different requirements.
Can I share Opera data with a laptop?
The reviewed launch and FAQ do not confirm a hotspot entitlement. Ask Opera eSIM support before buying for laptop work. Do not treat a phone-data allowance as confirmation that tethering is supported, unrestricted or suitable for a critical meeting.
What happens on a trip longer than 30 days?

What should I check if the Opera eSIM will not connect?
Check the purchased destination, remaining allowance, selected mobile-data line and travel eSIM's roaming setting. Contact support if it still fails. Avoid deleting the profile as a troubleshooting step: Opera says it cannot be reinstalled after removal or moved to another device.
When does OpenSim make more sense than Opera's trial?
The verified Asia regional plan is a useful choice when you want one allowance across Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore for a longer itinerary. If Opera's free allowance covers your entire short trip, it may be enough. Neither option should be chosen solely from the number of advertised destinations.
