Warsaw Independence Day 2026: closures and travel

Poland's Independence Day falls on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. In Warsaw, plan around a morning running event, a separate afternoon march and holiday opening hours. The race organizer has published road restrictions, but those are not a complete citywide transport plan for the day.
If you are arriving, leaving or changing hotels that day, settle the journey before filling the time between with sightseeing. A normal driving estimate is a poor basis for a connection through a closed street. You can still plan a visit, but make fewer cross-city commitments and keep a current route home.
Three different plans for November 11
| Your plan | What determines the day | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Run or support the Bieg Niepodleglosci | Your assigned start, bib arrangements and the organizer's road notice | Everyone starts at 11:11 or the shopping-centre office is the starting line |
| Visit museums and explore the city | Each attraction's holiday notice and a journey around gatherings | Every museum is closed, or every normal weekday bus runs unchanged |
| Be near the afternoon march | The organizer's assembly schedule and current authority instructions | The race restrictions describe the march, or an event finish time means roads reopen then |
The photograph shows PGE Narodowy in April 2026. It identifies the stadium area mentioned in the march schedule; it does not show November 11 crowds or an entrance open for this event.
Confirmed race road restrictions
The race organizer's November 11 road notice lists these restrictions:
| Area | Published restriction window |
|---|---|
| Al. Jana Pawla II, Rondo Zgrupowania AK Radoslaw to Nowolipki | 03:00-20:00; trams 17, 19 and 33 do not use this section in either direction |
| Roundabout beside the event centre near Westfield Arkadia | No through passage, 09:00-16:00 |
| Al. Jana Pawla II, Nowolipki to Elektoralna | 09:00-15:30 |
| Further race sections, including Prosta between Rondo ONZ and Rondo Daszynskiego | 10:00-15:30; movement on the roundabouts is retained |
These are the organizer's maximum closure windows, with sections reopening progressively after the last runner. They are not guaranteed opening times or a promise that a taxi can cross the course. Use the linked map for the full street list.
For a hotel pickup, send the driver the address and ask which side of the restriction they can reach. Do the same for a luggage collection. A short walk on a map can become a longer detour when the direct crossing is unavailable.
Check Warsaw Public Transport's current changes before departure. Do not infer a bus diversion, station closure or replacement stop solely from a road line on the race map.
Runners: the bib office and starting line are different places
The official participant information places the 10km start on Al. Jana Pawla II at Dzielna. Bib collection is in Westfield Arkadia's main hall. Allow time between them rather than setting a taxi destination simply to the shopping centre.
| Bib collection date | Published hours |
|---|---|
| Saturday, November 7 | 12:00-20:00 |
| Sunday, November 8 | 12:00-20:00 |
| Monday, November 9 | Closed |
| Tuesday, November 10 | 16:00-20:00 |
| Wednesday, November 11 | 08:00-10:00; previously paid entries for participants from outside Warsaw only |
The organizer requires photo identification and the issued QR code for personal collection. Save the code before leaving Wi-Fi. Do not interpret race-day collection as an unrestricted registration desk.
The race programme uses two groups and several waves. 11:11 is the first running wave, not every participant's departure. Check your bib colour and assigned zone before choosing when to arrive.
The participant page also offers race-day Zone 1 public transport on the basis of a bib. That is a participant entitlement, not free holiday transport for every spectator or visitor. Confirm the current instructions before relying on it.
The afternoon march is a separate gathering
The Independence March organizer's 2026 schedule lists assembly at Dmowski Roundabout at 14:00, a 14:30 departure and later activity at the National Stadium grounds. It gives 20:00 as the event's end, with arrival at the stadium approximate.
Treat those as the organizer's programme, not police confirmation of every closure or a transport timetable. A scheduled departure does not describe when people start gathering. Do not plan a tight transfer through an assembly area immediately beforehand.
For a sightseeing day, choose activities that do not require crossing a dense gathering. Follow barriers and instructions rather than trying to squeeze through to keep an itinerary. The UK's current Poland travel advice recommends extra care in crowded places, monitoring local information and following authorities' instructions. It notes that marches can attract violence; this is not a prediction that every part of Warsaw will be unsafe.
With children or anyone who finds crowds difficult, leave yourself an easy way to shorten the outing. Do not use an unfamiliar mass gathering as the route between a museum and dinner.
Are museums and shops open?
Warsaw's tourist office lists November 11 as a public holiday. Expect shopping and attraction hours to differ from an ordinary Wednesday. Buy essentials beforehand and check the actual venue rather than relying on a general weekly listing.
That does not mean every museum is closed. The Museum of Independence's 2026 visitor notice explicitly includes November 11 among the dates when its exhibitions and sales points open. Confirm the branch, admission and any special programme you want before setting out. Do not confuse it with the separate Warsaw Rising Museum or Polish History Museum.
One confirmed indoor visit and a meal nearby make a more workable holiday plan than several timed bookings across the city. For a longer family itinerary, use our Poland with kids guide; the holiday logistics here should not determine every day of the trip.
Arriving from the airport or railway station
The tourist office's arrival guide distinguishes Chopin Airport from Warsaw Modlin. Check your airport code before saving a connection.
From Chopin, the guide lists rail services S2, S3 and RL, plus buses including 175 and night service N32. Check the dated service and the final leg to your accommodation. A train reaching central Warsaw does not establish that the usual connecting bus or hotel-side road is available.
Modlin is a different transfer: the guide describes an airport bus to Modlin railway station for onward rail travel. Do not take a Chopin journey time or city-bus instruction as a Modlin plan. Check the airport and operator's current departures, fare and ticket conditions before buying.
For an intercity train, save the exact station on the ticket. Warszawa Centralna, Zachodnia and Wschodnia are different places. Work backwards from the departure and include the route out of your accommodation, not only the final train journey.
Useful apps, valid tickets and an offline backup
The official Warsaw app guide recommends Jakdojade for public-transport connections and timetables, and Warszawa 19115 for city information and reports. Check a fresh journey before each major move; a screenshot from breakfast will not show a later diversion.
Warsaw's transport guidance distinguishes city Zone 1 from suburban Zone 2 and says tickets need validation. Follow the instructions for the ticket you actually buy. Having a payment receipt or an app installed is not, by itself, a valid journey.
Before leaving your accommodation:
- Save the hotel address, correct station and a meeting point away from the busiest gathering.
- Keep the race map and any bib QR code available offline, with a charged phone and battery reserve.
- Test the transport app and payment method while you have dependable Wi-Fi.
- Recheck the return, including the final walk and any access requirement, rather than saving only the outward route.
For an emergency, the tourist office lists 112. City information through 19115 is a different service. Do not treat a travel-data package as a replacement for emergency calling arrangements.
Mobile data for changes during the day
An OpenSim Poland plan can supply data for a revised pickup point, a current departure check or messages when your group separates. The current country selection includes 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3, both eligible for top-up. Check the selected plan's activation terms and final total before buying.
For a compatible unlocked phone without suitable existing roaming, a fixed allowance gives you a defined starting cost for those travel tasks. It does not guarantee priority reception in a crowd, open a closed road or include a transport ticket. If your home plan already covers Poland at a suitable cost, another plan may be unnecessary.
Use the travel data calculator for your wider trip, check phone compatibility and read when to install before travel. Keep the offline backup whichever connection you choose.
Sources and updates
The running-event organizer supplies the race restrictions, start and bib instructions; the march organizer supplies its separate programme. Warsaw's tourist office explains the holiday, arrival options and apps, while the Museum of Independence confirms its own holiday opening. Further city or operator notices, changed restrictions, revised event arrangements or museum hours will trigger an update. After November 11, these edition-specific arrangements are historical.
