Brazil's aviation regulator authorized WestJet to operate regular international service on October 7, 2026. That removes a key regulatory condition for the airline's planned nonstop route between Calgary and São Paulo.

WestJet now advertises three weekly flights from December 2026 through February 2027. Independent current reporting gives December 15, 2026, as the first departure and February 14, 2027, as the end of the short season. The route has not started operating, so travelers should still verify their date in WestJet's booking system before committing to a separate connection.

The practical answer: WestJet's current page lists three Calgary-São Paulo flights a week from December 2026 to February 2027. Brazil has authorized the airline, but the first flight is still in the future. The limited schedule makes date changes and missed separate-ticket connections harder to recover from than on a daily route.

This guide was checked on October 9, 2026, before the planned first flight.

What Brazil's authorization changes

Brazil's National Civil Aviation Agency published Portaria 20.129/SSA on October 7. The order authorizes WestJet Airlines Ltd. to operate regular international air service to and from Brazil, and it took effect when published.

The order is an airline authorization, not proof that the Calgary-São Paulo service has already operated. WestJet's current South America page still presents the route as future service and says schedules are subject to change.

Status on October 9Authorized and announced, but not yet operating

Aviacionline's report on the authorization supplies the exact December 15 to February 14 window and the planned aircraft. WestJet's live page confirms the broader December-to-February season and three-weekly frequency. Use the live booking result for the travel date as the final schedule check.

The season is shorter than WestJet first announced

WestJet's January route announcement originally described a November 8 start, three weekly flights and a Boeing 787-9, subject to government approval. The current route page now gives only December through February.

That change matters for anyone who saved the original announcement. A November itinerary or a late-February trip should not be planned around the nonstop unless WestJet's current booking system offers it. Search both directions, confirm that each result is nonstop, and save the issued itinerary rather than relying on a copied schedule.

The 787-9 plan is useful for choosing a cabin, but aircraft swaps remain possible. Recheck the seat map after any schedule-change notice.

Three weekly flights need a recovery plan

A daily route gives passengers more same-route recovery options after a cancellation or missed connection. A three-weekly seasonal flight does not. The next Calgary-São Paulo nonstop may be days away, and rerouting can introduce another carrier or gateway.

Keep a feeder flight and the Brazil sector on one ticket when practical. WestJet says journeys booked together on its website with LATAM can provide coordinated connections and baggage transfer to more than 60 South American destinations. That does not mean two separately purchased tickets receive the same protection.

For a separate ticket into Calgary, leave enough time to absorb a delay, collect and recheck a bag if required, complete document checks and clear security. A 55-minute connection discussed online may look legal in a search result, but the result does not show how costly a missed three-weekly flight could be.

Check the fare before packing a cabin bag

WestJet's carry-on page says the allowance depends on the fare. Its UltraBasic fare normally includes a personal item but not a carry-on bag, although specified exceptions can apply. Other eligible fares allow one carry-on up to 56 by 23 by 36 cm and one personal item up to 41 by 15 by 33 cm.

Do not assume a long-haul destination changes the fare rule. Read the baggage line on the exact itinerary before purchase. Checked-bag fees and allowances also vary by fare, route and status, so use WestJet's checked-baggage guidance and the final checkout summary.

If the itinerary includes LATAM or another airline, compare the operating carrier's rules for each segment. The smallest allowance or an airport bag check can affect the trip even when the ticket was sold by WestJet.

Calgary's international cutoff is earlier than many passengers expect

WestJet opens online check-in 24 hours before departure. Its airport timing page recommends arriving 150 minutes before an international flight.

For international departures from Calgary, check-in and baggage acceptance close 75 minutes before departure. WestJet recommends being at the gate 40 minutes before departure and closes boarding 15 minutes before departure. These are hard process boundaries, not a suggested airport arrival plan.

Allow more time for a first trip, checked baggage or a document review. Check the flight status again before leaving for YYC, especially during winter weather.

Check Brazil entry documents for each passport

The new nonstop does not change Brazil's entry rules. Canada's government cannot confirm Brazilian admission, and a valid airline ticket is not travel authorization.

Brazil's foreign ministry says Canadian citizens traveling for tourism or business have needed a visa since April 10, 2025. Eligible travelers can use the official Brazil eVisa process. Brazil's visitor-visa guidance explains the broader category and application routes.

Rules depend on citizenship, purpose and length of stay. Check each passenger's passport against current Brazilian government guidance before booking a non-refundable fare. A transit elsewhere can add another country's requirements.

Mobile data for Brazil, Canada or both

For a São Paulo-focused trip, compare the live Brazil OpenSim eSIM. A journey beginning or ending with time in Alberta may fit a Canada OpenSim eSIM. Travelers continuing across several countries can compare the South America OpenSim eSIM or a Global OpenSim eSIM that includes both Canada and Brazil.

OpenSim's live catalog was checked on October 9. Confirm the selected package's destination list, allowance, validity, speed conditions, hotspot support and top-up eligibility before purchase. Not every package is reloadable, and some daily plans continue at reduced speed after the day's high-speed allowance is used.

Install the eSIM on reliable Wi-Fi before departure, then follow the package's activation rule. Save the itinerary, visa, hotel address and baggage receipt offline. Mobile data helps with airline alerts, maps and ground transport after landing; it does not provide inflight Wi-Fi or protect a separate ticket.

Ten questions about WestJet Calgary-São Paulo flights

Has WestJet received approval to fly to Brazil?

Yes. Brazil's aviation regulator authorized WestJet to operate regular international service to and from Brazil on October 7, 2026. The authorization does not mean the Calgary-São Paulo route is already operating.

When is the first Calgary-São Paulo flight?

Current independent reporting gives December 15, 2026, as the first departure. WestJet's live route page confirms a December start but does not show the exact date in its overview, so verify the date in the booking system.

Why did the start move from November to December?

WestJet's January announcement listed November 8, subject to approval. Its current page now lists service from December through February, but the airline has not explained the change on that page. Treat the later live schedule as current.

Is the WestJet Calgary-São Paulo route year-round?

No. WestJet currently presents it as a short seasonal service. Current reporting gives February 14, 2027, as the end of the published season.

How often will WestJet fly to São Paulo?

The published plan is three flights a week. Because it is not daily, search the exact dates and build extra recovery room around any separate connection.

Will WestJet use a Dreamliner to Brazil?

The current plan calls for a Boeing 787-9. An airline can substitute aircraft, so use the seat map for the operating flight rather than treating the announced type as guaranteed.

Is a short Calgary connection safe for this flight?

It depends on the incoming flight, ticket, bags and immigration or security steps. A one-ticket connection offers more protection than separate bookings, but no short connection is risk-free. The route's three-weekly frequency raises the cost of a miss.

Will my bag transfer to a LATAM connection?

WestJet advertises baggage transfer on eligible connecting journeys booked together through its website. Confirm the final destination on the printed bag tag. Separate tickets should be treated as requiring collection and recheck unless the airlines confirm otherwise.

Does UltraBasic include a carry-on bag to Brazil?

UltraBasic normally includes a personal item but not a carry-on bag, subject to WestJet's listed exceptions. Check the fare displayed for the specific itinerary because inclusions can change.

Do Canadians need a visa for Brazil?

Yes for ordinary tourism or business visits under the rule in force when this guide was checked. Brazil restored the requirement for Canadian citizens on April 10, 2025, and offers an official eVisa route for eligible travelers.

Before booking

  • Search both directions for the exact dates and confirm each result is nonstop.
  • Treat December 15 and February 14 as current reported boundaries, not a year-round promise.
  • Recheck the aircraft and seat map after a schedule notice.
  • Compare fare-specific cabin and checked-bag rules before paying.
  • Keep feeder and onward flights on one ticket when practical.
  • Leave more recovery room than a daily route would require.
  • Check Brazil's entry rules for every passport.
  • Confirm Calgary's 75-minute international check-in cutoff.
  • Read the final destination on the baggage tag.
  • Save the booking, visa and essential addresses offline.

How this WestJet route was checked

Brazil's aviation order supports WestJet's authorization. WestJet's current route page supports the three-weekly December-to-February plan, while its original announcement records the earlier November proposal. Current aviation reporting supplies the exact revised season and planned aircraft. WestJet and Brazilian government pages support the baggage, check-in and entry guidance.

Public traveler discussions were used to select questions about short Calgary connections, schedule certainty, cabin bags, through-checked luggage and onward travel. They were not used as authority for airline or government rules.

We will update this guide if WestJet changes the first flight, season, frequency, aircraft, fare rules or connecting arrangement, or after the inaugural service is independently confirmed. Until then, this is an authorized and planned route, not an operating one.
