Wexford Festival Opera runs from October 15 to 31, 2026. You can make a first visit around a short daytime performance rather than commit to a full evening opera. Choose the event and its actual venue first, check ticket availability, then arrange the journey home around the published running time.

The 75th festival has three mainstage operas alongside recitals, pocket operas and other events. Its interest lies partly in hearing works you may not encounter in a normal opera season. You do not need to recognize every title to choose a visit that suits your time and budget.

The immediate booking issue is more practical: several daytime performances are already marked sold out, and general information pages retain prices that differ from the individual 2026 listings. Use the current performance page and checkout total, not an old headline starting price.

Choose a short introduction or a full evening

These examples come from the festival's current event pages, checked October 15. Prices are listed admission prices; check the facility fee and any other applicable charges before paying.

EventListed price and lengthWhat to consider
Lunchtime RecitalsEUR25; about 55 minutesA shorter listening visit; venue changes by date
The Rose of CastileEUR30; about 70 minutesPocket opera sung in English; several dates sold out
IrisEUR40-175; about 2 hours 40 minutes, including a 30-minute intervalItalian with English surtitles; allow a full evening on most dates
Pop-up eventsFree; about 15 minutesSpecific dates and locations, with two excluded days

A recital suits someone curious about the singing but unsure about a long staged work. A pocket opera adds a story within a shorter visit. The mainstage option makes sense when the production itself is the reason for travelling, rather than something to squeeze between other plans.

Shorter does not automatically mean suitable for children. Read the production content guidance: *Iris* includes abduction, forced sex work and death; *The Gambler* addresses gambling addiction; *The First Festival* includes strong language and sexual references. Choose for the people attending, not just the running time. The Ireland with kids guide covers the wider family holiday.

Check the date, cast and venue before buying

The recital series uses both St Iberius Church and the O'Reilly Theatre. For example, October 19 is listed at St Iberius, while October 20 is at the O'Reilly Theatre. Both start at 13:00. The October 16 and 17 recitals are marked sold out at this check; a general festival listing is not evidence of remaining seats.

*The Rose of Castile* has a similar availability problem. Its page still shows booking links for October 16 at 15:00 and October 31 at 11:00, while several intervening performances are marked sold out. Check again before fixing a travel date; those labels can change.

For *Iris*, opening night on October 15 starts at 20:00, while October 20 and 28 are listed at 19:30 and October 31 at 17:00. The October 23 performance is marked sold out. Cast also varies: Joseph Calleja is listed for October 15, 23, 28 and 31, with Yuchen Pan singing Osaka on October 20. If a particular singer matters to you, read the date-specific cast rather than relying on a festival poster.

Use the official booking route and check the confirmation for the event, date, time, theatre and seat. The box office is at the National Opera House on High Street; its published phone hours are Monday to Saturday, 09:30 to 17:00, with performance-day arrangements listed separately.

Ticket fees and changes belong in the budget

The published ticket terms list facility fees of EUR1.50 for tickets up to EUR20, EUR3 for tickets from EUR21 to EUR60, and EUR4 for tickets of EUR61 or more at the covered venues.

That means a EUR25 recital or EUR30 pocket opera can have a different payable total from the headline figure. Check the basket before comparing a standalone event with a package.

The same terms say non-Friends' tickets cannot be exchanged or refunded under the festival's policy. Do not build a speculative itinerary around changing the performance later. Ask the box office about your circumstances before purchase if flexibility is essential.

PDF tickets can be scanned from a phone according to the published terms. Save the actual file, not just the confirmation email's subject line, and follow the instructions for your chosen delivery method. Keep a backup that you can find without reopening a mobile inbox.

Daytime packages have a specific order and booking method

The 2026 daytime packages pair a performance with lunch at Whites of Wexford:

PackageListed pricePublished sequence
Lunchtime RecitalEUR50Recital at 13:00, then lunch at 14:15
Pocket OperaEUR55Lunch at 13:00, then opera at 15:00

All package bookings, including individual bookings, must go through the box office. Confirm the available dates and exact performance before arranging transport. The package schedule does not mean every standalone pocket opera begins at 15:00.

This can work for someone who wants one organized afternoon without an evening finish. Compare it with buying a performance and choosing your own meal, including the final fees. Do not reserve a separate lunch that conflicts with the package you have just booked.

Free pop-ups are not scheduled every festival day

The current pop-up page excludes October 15 and October 27. Its live list should take priority over a downloaded calendar that still shows a generic daily pop-up.

Opening-weekend examples are October 16 at 12:00 in Green Acres, October 17 at 12:00 in Tabi, and October 18 at 12:30 in Whites of Wexford. Notice the Sunday time change. These short performances can introduce the festival without buying a mainstage seat, but check the exact location before walking across town.

Treat a pop-up as one part of the day, not a guaranteed substitute for a sold-out event. If a recital or opera is your main reason for visiting, secure that booking first and add a free performance only when the timings work.

Getting to the opera house and returning to Dublin

The festival's arrival guide places the National Opera House on High Street, Eircode Y35 FEP3. Its frontage blends with the neighbouring houses, so save the entrance location rather than looking for a freestanding theatre building.

The organizer estimates about a ten-minute walk from the bus and train station at Redmond Square. High Street is narrow and one-way, with limited vehicle access apart from set-down outside the opera house. Do not plan to arrive at curtain time and then search for parking.

For Dublin travel, compare the date-specific rail service with Wexford Bus route 740, which links Wexford, Dublin city and the airport. Check the actual stop and destination; an airport service and your accommodation in Dublin are not necessarily the same final journey.

Work backwards from the performance finish, including the interval, the walk to the stop and some margin. A daytime visit may be easier to combine with ordinary public transport than a late opera. If the return does not fit, book accommodation or another confirmed arrangement before buying the event. Do not assume that transport will wait for the final applause.

The October 22 Opera Train is a separate package

The Opera Train experience is a one-off, black-tie trip on Thursday, October 22, priced at EUR479 per person. It includes return rail travel, reception, dinner with wine, an opera ticket and supper.

Its published plan departs Dublin Connolly at 15:30, includes *The Gambler* at 19:30, and returns to Connolly at 01:10 the following morning. Transfers between Wexford station and the opera house are part of that itinerary. Check availability and the final joining instructions before booking.

This is not a regular late train that any festival ticket holder can board. It suits someone who wants the combined evening and accepts the price and late arrival. It does not establish a return service for another date. You will still need a plan from Connolly to your accommodation after arrival.

Dress, surtitles and access without the guesswork

The festival's visitor guidance says many evening visitors dress formally, but this is not required for an ordinary performance. The Opera Train's explicit black-tie description is a separate condition. Wear something comfortable for sitting and suitable for the walk outside.

Latecomers may have to wait until a suitable break, potentially the interval, before taking their seats. Arrive with time to find the correct room. The National Opera House has a free cloakroom on Level -1, but do not assume it is a luggage-storage service for an entire day.

For language and mobility, the accessibility page confirms English surtitles for opera in the O'Reilly Theatre, lift access to all levels and adapted toilets on Levels 0, 1 and 2. Contact the box office before booking accessible or companion seating, hearing support or an assistance animal. External festival venues have different facilities and may not be wheelchair accessible.

A little preparation helps more than memorizing opera terminology. Read the synopsis if you want to follow the story, check your view of the surtitles when choosing a seat, and keep devices put away during the performance as the newcomer guidance requests. You can make a solo visit without needing to organize a group around it.

Save tickets and transport information before the journey

Use TFI Live for journey planning, timetables and supported live departure information. Check Wexford Bus's own timetable for its service rather than assuming every operator has the same live-data coverage. Save the relevant stop, return options and booking reference.

If your existing phone plan includes enough Ireland roaming data, it may cover the trip without another purchase. OpenSim is an alternative for a visitor who wants a separate prepaid allowance for travel checks, tickets and messages.

At the October 15 catalog check, one OpenSim Ireland plan listed 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76 and supported top-up. Its defined allowance and longer validity can suit a festival visit within a wider Ireland holiday; it is not a claim that OpenSim beats every included roaming plan. Confirm the current selected package terms and price before purchase.

Check phone compatibility, installation timing and the travel data calculator before leaving. Keep the ticket PDF and an offline note of your return plan even with mobile data arranged. An eSIM cannot make a sold-out seat available or guarantee reception inside every venue.

Sources and updates

Programme, prices, availability labels and venue guidance were checked against Wexford Festival Opera and the National Opera House on October 15, 2026. Use the current event listing and checkout for your booking; recheck transport for the actual date. This guide should be updated for material changes to the 2026 programme, pop-up locations, ticket terms, access or Opera Train arrangements rather than reused with next year's dates.
