Yela travel eSIM launches for African travelers

LAfricaMobile introduced Yela on September 17, 2026 as a travel eSIM aimed at African travelers. It can be bought online, installed by QR code and kept alongside a traveler's primary SIM on a compatible phone.
The launch announcement says Yela covers more than 190 countries and destinations. That figure is not consistent across every public surface: Yela's website says 190-plus, Google Play says more than 200, and the live destination directory listed 204 destinations when checked on September 17. Travelers should search for every stop by name instead of treating one headline number as a guarantee.
The traveler decision: Yela offers a credible new route to buying data before or during a trip, particularly for customers who want French or English service and regional payment support. Compare the exact allowance, validity, destination list and missing service terms before paying. The launch does not establish that every plan includes voice, SMS, hotspot use or the same local networks.
What LAfricaMobile launched
The GSMA member announcement describes Yela as LAfricaMobile's travel eSIM for African travelers. A customer chooses a destination and plan online, pays digitally, receives a QR code and activates the profile on an eSIM-compatible phone.
LAfricaMobile is based in Dakar and lists Yela among its connectivity products. The Yela Android app was updated on September 8. Its listing says the app supports French and English, multiple currencies, PayDunya payments, activation tracking and usage monitoring.
This is not a local mobile subscription for every destination. It is a travel-connectivity product. The public launch material does not promise a destination phone number, ordinary voice service or incoming SMS with every plan.
The coverage count needs a destination check
Three current Yela surfaces use different totals:
| Public surface | Current wording |
|---|---|
| GSMA announcement | More than 190 countries and destinations |
| Yela website | 190-plus countries |
| Google Play listing | More than 200 destinations |
| Live Yela directory | 204 destination entries on September 17 |
These figures can describe the same catalog at different levels of precision, but Yela has not published a reconciliation. A directory entry also does not answer which network serves a country or whether coverage reaches a particular island, border area or rural route.
Search the live destination directory for each country on the itinerary. For a regional or global package, open its full coverage list and check transit stops as well as the final destination. A plan covering Senegal and France, for example, should not be assumed to cover a connection elsewhere merely because Yela advertises global reach.
Installation and validity are separate
Yela's setup guide gives a familiar sequence: confirm phone compatibility, choose a destination and plan, create an account, pay, then scan the QR code sent by email.
Its validity guidance adds two useful details. The plan's validity starts on the first connection to a compatible network at the destination, and the customer has up to 365 days after purchase to activate it. That gives most travelers room to install before departure without starting the usage clock.
Installation still needs internet access. Save the confirmation email and manual details before leaving reliable Wi-Fi. Do not delete the profile after scanning unless Yela support tells you to do so, because the public help pages do not promise that the same QR code can be reused.
What Yela confirms and what remains unclear
| Buying question | Public answer on September 17 |
|---|---|
| Purchase method | Website or Android app, with a QR code sent by email |
| Languages | French and English are listed in Google Play |
| Plan length | The website advertises options from 3 to 30 days |
| Activation deadline | Up to 365 days after purchase |
| Validity start | First connection to a compatible network at the destination |
| Keep the primary SIM | Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone |
| Top-up or extension | Yela says plans can be topped up or extended |
| Local operators | Not named on the public pages reviewed |
| Calls, SMS or local number | Not clearly confirmed for the selected plan |
| Hotspot or tethering | No general public rule found |
| Refunds and profile transfer | No clear public terms found in the reviewed help pages |
Yela advertises 4G and 5G, but a speed label is not a promise that 5G will be available everywhere. Device bands, the partner network, local deployment and congestion all affect the connection. Check the selected plan rather than relying on the site-wide badge.
Keep the home line without giving it the data job
The launch announcement says travelers can retain their primary SIM and phone number. On a dual-SIM phone, that usually means leaving the home line installed while assigning mobile data to Yela.
That setup needs care. Turn off data roaming on the home line unless the home carrier has confirmed the cost. Select Yela as the cellular-data line, and disable automatic cellular-data switching if the phone offers it. Enable data roaming on the Yela line if its installation instructions require it.
WhatsApp and similar apps normally keep the number already registered in the app while using the new data connection. Ordinary calls, voicemail and carrier SMS still belong to the home line and can attract roaming charges. Read our guides to keeping WhatsApp with an eSIM and choosing the correct data-roaming setting before departure.
Yela or a Roaming eSIM global plan?
Yela is worth considering when its exact destination appears, its plan length fits the trip and its payment options suit the traveler. Roaming eSIM is the clearer starting point when a buyer wants public package fields and an independent choice between two global coverage footprints.
The live Roaming eSIM catalog showed nine plans for Global 120+ Areas, starting at USD 8.90, and six Global139 plans, starting at USD 15.20, when checked on September 17. Individual package records show the allowance, validity, speed label and top-up status. Prices and inventory can change, so the current product card is the authority at checkout.
| Trip need | Better starting point |
|---|---|
| Yela lists every stop and the selected package answers the buyer's questions | Compare Yela's live plan and terms |
| One trip crosses many countries | Compare Yela's full list with Global 120+ Areas and Global139 |
| The buyer wants public allowance, validity and top-up fields | Check the Roaming eSIM package cards |
| A local number or ordinary SMS is essential | Do not buy until the selected provider confirms those features |
| Hotspot use is essential for work | Get a plan-level tethering answer before payment |
No public evidence reviewed supports calling either provider universally cheaper or faster. The useful comparison is the exact trip, phone and package, not the largest destination number.
Yela travel eSIM questions to answer before paying
Is my phone compatible with Yela?
It needs eSIM support, must not be carrier-locked against another profile and must have room for an additional eSIM. Compatibility can vary by the phone's market version, so check the exact model number rather than the family name alone.
Should I install Yela before departure?
Yes, if the selected plan follows Yela's published activation rule. Install while reliable internet is available, but leave the profile's data use off until the destination. Yela says validity starts at the first connection to a compatible network there.
How long can I wait before activating the plan?
Yela says a purchased plan can be activated for up to 365 days. Check the order confirmation in case a particular package states a shorter deadline.
Can I keep my usual SIM and phone number?
Yes, on a compatible dual-SIM phone. Yela can handle travel data while the primary line remains present. Charges for calls, SMS, voicemail or accidental data on the home line still come from the home carrier.
Does Yela include calls, SMS or a local number?
The public pages reviewed do not clearly promise those services for every plan. Treat the package as mobile data unless its checkout page explicitly includes voice, SMS or a number.
Which line should have data roaming enabled?
Use the setting in Yela's installation instructions for the Yela profile. Keep data roaming off on the home line unless the home carrier has confirmed an intended roaming package. Also disable automatic data switching where available.
Can I use Yela as a phone hotspot?
Do not assume so. No general tethering rule was found on the public pages reviewed. Ask Yela about the exact plan if a laptop, tablet or second phone depends on hotspot use.
Can I top up without installing another profile?
Yela says customers can top up or extend a plan. Confirm in the account that the add-on applies to the installed profile and destination before buying more data.
What should I do if the phone shows signal but no data?
Check that Yela is selected for cellular data, its required roaming setting is on, the home line is not taking over and the plan has activated at the destination. Restart the phone, then use Yela support before deleting the profile. The public help center does not promise QR-code reuse.
Should I buy a country, regional or global plan?
Choose a country plan for one destination when its allowance and network terms fit. Compare regional or global coverage for a multi-country itinerary, including airport connections and side trips. Verify every country by name and avoid paying for a broader footprint that the trip will not use.
Sources and updates
This article uses LAfricaMobile and Yela product pages for the launch, setup and validity rules, plus the current Google Play listing for app functions. The GSMA page confirms the September 17 announcement and its intended African-traveler audience. Independent African market reporting supplies context about device compatibility and the continuing role of local SIMs on longer stays, but it does not prove Yela's individual network performance.
Before buying, ask Yela to confirm coverage for each destination, the available operators, calls and SMS, hotspot support, refund and transfer terms, and when activation and top-up are possible.
