4iG and SpaceX plan Starlink Mobile for Hungary and Albania
4iG Group and SpaceX have signed an agreement to introduce Starlink Mobile in Hungary and Albania. The September 2 announcement describes a commercial direct-to-phone service that will add satellite coverage where 4iG's terrestrial networks are weak or unavailable.
The service is planned, not live. 4iG has not announced a launch date, price, eligible plan, local device list or visitor rule. The timetable still depends on regulatory, technical and commercial conditions in each market.
The traveler answer: Hungary and Albania come first, but neither has a public Starlink Mobile offer yet. Montenegro and North Macedonia appear only in the later V2 scope. Use terrestrial mobile data for a trip today, and treat future satellite access as a separate operator benefit until 4iG publishes retail terms.
Hungary and Albania come before the four-country V2 rollout
The 4iG announcement describes two stages. Keeping them separate prevents a planned V2 market from being mistaken for a current service area.

First-generation Starlink Mobile is intended to complement 4iG's mobile networks in dead zones, mountainous areas and coastal waters. V2 is the later system that 4iG says will use SpaceX's global 2 GHz priority spectrum rights and provide 5G non-terrestrial network capability.
No country in the agreement has a published coverage map. A broad market announcement does not mean every valley, road, island approach or stretch of coastal water will work from launch day.
Starlink Mobile is not the Starlink dish service
The name causes immediate confusion because Starlink already sells satellite internet that uses a dish and router. Starlink Mobile is a different service.

4iG says Starlink Mobile connects to LTE-compatible phones without dedicated satellite equipment. SpaceX describes its satellites as mobile towers in orbit. The connection is integrated through participating mobile networks rather than sold as a dish subscription.
That does not mean every LTE phone will be approved. Operators in existing markets publish their own device, software and plan lists. 4iG has not yet released equivalent lists for Hungary or Albania.
What first-generation Starlink Mobile may support
SpaceX's current Starlink Mobile page says its global platform provides data access on more than 40 apps and more than 100 devices. It describes voice through supported apps today, native calling as a future feature, and messaging with larger files and video planned later.
Those global platform statements are useful context, not a promise for 4iG customers. The Hungary and Albania agreement does not name:
- supported apps;
- ordinary SMS or MMS behavior;
- native incoming or outgoing calls;
- speed or daily data allowance;
- hotspot or tethering support;
- emergency calling or alert delivery; or
- performance on inland waterways or coastal routes.
A traveler should wait for the local operator's product page. It needs to identify the eligible phone, software version, customer plan, connection indicator and supported functions for that country.
An eSIM does not automatically include satellite access
An eSIM is the digital form of a mobile subscription. Starlink Mobile eligibility is a separate network entitlement controlled by a participating operator.
A phone can hold a Roaming eSIM and still be unable to register on a satellite network. Even if a package uses one of the same terrestrial operators involved in the 4iG group, that does not prove satellite access is included. Current Roaming eSIM package records for these countries do not advertise Starlink Mobile.
The same distinction applies to visitors using a local prepaid line. 4iG has not said whether Starlink Mobile will be included with every One plan, limited to selected monthly plans, sold as an add-on or offered to roaming partners.

Clear sky and an eligible line will both matter
SpaceX says Starlink Mobile works with an existing LTE phone where it can see the sky. The satellite link is designed for places beyond tower coverage, but buildings, tunnels, dense cover, steep terrain and the phone's orientation can affect the connection.
Do not assume indoor service. A phone may need to be outside with a broad view of the sky. The final 4iG instructions will need to explain whether the device connects automatically, which network label appears and whether a setting must be enabled.
Satellite fallback also does not replace preparation for remote routes. Download maps, tickets, accommodation details and emergency information. For hiking, sailing or isolated road travel, follow local safety guidance and carry the communication equipment appropriate to the route rather than relying on an unlaunched phone service.
The 2027 date belongs to Sovereign Solutions
The 4iG release also announces Sovereign Solutions, a separate secure satellite communications project for national-security and public-sector needs. It says that service is scheduled for next year, meaning 2027.
That sentence is not a consumer Starlink Mobile launch date. The commercial phone service has no firm date in the announcement. The two agreements appear in the same release, but they have different users and purposes.
Travelers should therefore ignore headlines that turn 2027 into a guaranteed retail start for Hungary, Albania, Montenegro or North Macedonia. The useful milestone will be a local operator page with price, eligibility, device and coverage details.
4iG Starlink Mobile or Roaming eSIM for a trip?
The two services are complementary. Starlink Mobile is intended for a location where the participating terrestrial network has disappeared. Roaming eSIM supplies ordinary mobile data where a listed partner network is available.

🏆 Roaming eSIM wins for travel happening now: on September 2, the public catalog listed 15 Hungary packages, 14 Albania packages, 11 Montenegro packages and 14 North Macedonia packages. 4iG Starlink Mobile could win in a true dead zone later, but only after the service launches and the traveler's line and phone qualify.
This comparison does not turn terrestrial data into an emergency guarantee. A Roaming eSIM cannot connect without a supported partner signal and does not inherit Starlink Mobile access merely because both services appear on the same phone.
Choose terrestrial data for the four announced markets
Use a Hungary Roaming eSIM or Albania Roaming eSIM for a trip before the first-generation service launches. Read the selected card for network, validity, start rule, hotspot support and whether the package can be topped up.
For the later V2 markets, compare a Montenegro Roaming eSIM or North Macedonia Roaming eSIM. A country plan is often the cleaner fit for one destination.
For a route crossing several borders, use the Europe eSIM plan comparison and verify every country in a regional plan's live coverage list. Ten questions about 4iG Starlink Mobile
- Is Starlink Mobile live in Hungary or Albania? No public consumer offer or firm launch date has been announced.
- Why are four countries mentioned? Hungary and Albania are first-generation markets. Montenegro and North Macedonia join the later V2 scope.
- Do I need a Starlink dish? Not for Starlink Mobile. It is designed to connect an eligible LTE phone through a participating carrier.
- Which phones will work? 4iG has not published a local device list. LTE compatibility alone does not establish operator approval.
- Will One customers receive it automatically? No retail eligibility rule has been published. Wait for the exact One or 4iG plan terms.
- Can a tourist or prepaid customer use it? Unknown. The agreement does not define visitor, prepaid or identity requirements.
- Will a Roaming eSIM connect to the satellites? Not under any current package term. Satellite access needs a separate operator entitlement.
- Will calls, SMS and hotspot use work? 4iG has not published the local feature matrix. SpaceX's global platform page is not a country-level guarantee.
- Will it work indoors? Do not assume so. SpaceX says the phone needs a view of the sky, and local performance rules are not published.
- When will V2 reach Montenegro and North Macedonia? No firm date has been announced. The schedule depends on regulatory, technical and commercial conditions.
