Vienna Art Week 2026: free events, studios and bookings

Vienna Art Week runs November 6-13, 2026. For visits to working artists' studios, choose the Open Studio Days on November 7-8. For the central exhibition, head to Goldschlagstraße 1, not last year's venue. Check each event's reservation and admission conditions before setting out, even when the festival describes its programme as free.
The theme is "Navigating Angst", with exhibitions, talks, performances and guided visits across the city. You do not need to be a collector or work in the art world. A studio visit can be a chance to ask about unfinished work; a museum event gives you a more structured introduction.
The organizer's October 13 feature on Fulgurite Flute is one example of the programme's range: Barbara Husar's project turns a mineral formation associated with lightning into an instrument. It is worth reading the individual listing rather than choosing only from familiar museum names.
Which Vienna Art Week dates fit your visit?
Start with the current festival website, then choose a format you have time to enjoy.
| What you want | When to plan | Main decision |
|---|---|---|
| Working studios | November 7-8 | Pick a small geographic cluster |
| Central exhibition | November 7-13 | Visit during regular afternoon hours |
| Exhibition opening | November 6 evening | Register for the opening separately |
| Museum talks or tours | Individual programme dates | Check language, booking and admission |
| An accessible guided route | Specific VAW for All sessions | Confirm the format and meeting point |
A studio weekend is different from a weekday museum visit. If you arrive on Monday, do not expect the weekend's private workspaces to remain open to casual visitors.
Choose one event you would be disappointed to miss and build around it. Two worthwhile visits with time to talk, eat and travel are more manageable than a route that crosses Vienna repeatedly.
Free entry does not mean every event is a walk-in
The festival FAQ says its events have free admission, with registration required for certain sessions because capacity is limited. It also distinguishes the festival from a commercial art fair.
Use the conditions on the individual event page when making your plans. A free guided tour can be fully booked; a museum can have a separate admission requirement. Neither is resolved by turning up with the festival homepage on your phone.
Before reserving, check the session's date, language, meeting point and confirmation process. Save the confirmation and release any place you cannot use. For a visit outside a listed festival session, check the institution's ordinary ticket rules rather than assuming the entire museum becomes free for the week.
The Natural History Museum admission exception
The programme listing places Fulgurite Flute on November 11, 18:00-19:00, at the Naturhistorisches Museum, Burgring 7. It specifies German and says attendance requires a valid admission ticket; a limited number of free tickets is available.
Check how to obtain one before including the performance in a free itinerary. Without a confirmed free allocation, budget for the required museum admission. The general festival message should not override this event-specific condition.
House of Navigating Angst: opening night or regular visit?
The central exhibition occupies a temporary venue at Goldschlagstraße 1, 1150 Vienna. It brings together work by more than 30 international artists across four levels of a late-19th-century building before renovation.
There are two different ways to visit:
- Friday, November 6, 20:30: the opening, with registration required.
- November 7-13, 13:00-19:00 daily: regular exhibition hours, with free admission.
Choose the regular hours if you want an afternoon exhibition visit rather than the opening event. Save the exact address: the current venue is not the previous edition's Funkhaus.
Four exhibition levels do not establish step-free access. If stairs, seating or toilets affect your visit, ask the organizer about the temporary building before booking around it. The inclusive programme elsewhere in Vienna does not guarantee that every festival space has the same facilities.
Open Studio Days: choose a neighborhood, not fifty addresses
The Open Studio Days directory lists around 50 selected artists opening their workspaces on November 7 and 8, 13:00-18:00. Use its map or list view to find a few nearby studios whose work interests you.
For example, Pelzgasse 20 is a shared studio building in the 15th district. Its listing describes courtyard video presentations as part of the weekend. This gives you a specific stop to investigate alongside the central exhibition, rather than an instruction to cover every participating district.
A studio is a workplace. Ask before photographing people or work, avoid blocking doors, and leave time for a conversation if the artist is available. Check the address carefully, including the floor or courtyard information. A map pin for the building may not identify the studio entrance.
A guided alternative in the 7th district
District Tour 1 runs November 7, 13:30-15:30, meeting at Lindengasse 46 and ending at Neustiftgasse 62. The programme specifies German and requires registration because places are limited.
Reserve that route if its language and timing suit you. It is a guided appointment, separate from browsing the studio directory independently. Keep travel time clear before the meeting; arriving at the first artist's address is not always the same as reaching a tour's meeting point.
WUK: a practical option for several kinds of art
The WUK's own Art Week guide gives several reasons to explore the site, with different times for each activity:
| Activity | Listed time | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Off the Precipice | November 6, 17:00-18:30 | Curatorial tour followed by a performance |
| Leslie de Melo's open studio | November 7-8, 13:00-18:00 | Work in painting, drawing and sculpture; entrance E |
| Gabriele Rothemann artist talk | November 10, 18:30 | Talk at Fotogalerie Wien |
Use Währinger Straße 59 for the WUK site, then follow the specific room or entrance. Do not mistake one event's opening time for the hours of every space there.
This can suit a visitor interested in seeing work outside the large museum collections. Check the relevant listing again before travelling, particularly if the tour or talk is the purpose of your visit.
Language and accessibility: choose the actual session
An English website does not make a guided event English-speaking. Read the event-language field before registering. Plain German can help German learners, but it is not an English translation.
The VAW for All programme includes tactile tours, sign-language interpretation and accessible studio shuttles. The shuttle tours are listed for November 7 and 8, 15:00-17:30, starting and ending at Karlsplatz/Akademiestraße, by the subway staircase and lift. Registration is required.
Use the specific access format that meets your needs and confirm any companion or mobility arrangements with the organizer. Do not assume that an ordinary walking tour uses the same route as the accessible shuttle.
At our October 17 check, the November 11 "Within easy reach" tactile tour at the Heidi Horten Collection was marked fully booked. Choose another suitable session or ask about cancellations; do not build a trip around an unconfirmed place.
Getting between studios, exhibitions and museums
Keep the exhibition address, studio entrance and guided-tour meeting point as separate saved locations. In a citywide festival, the nearest venue is not necessarily the next event you can attend.
The official WienMobil app provides journey planning, tickets and real-time public-transport information. Plan from your actual accommodation and allow time for the final walk. Recheck the return route if your last event finishes elsewhere.
Wiener Linien's ticket-use guidance distinguishes paper tickets marked for validation from digital WienMobil tickets, which run from their selected start time. Confirm that you hold a valid ticket before travelling; a saved route is not a transport ticket.
For a first visit, keep one part of the day in a single district and make a longer transfer only for a booked event. Leave space for a meal and a warm break between studios. This is a suggested pace, not a claim that every listed venue can be combined in one afternoon.
Staying connected during a citywide art visit
Download the programme details you need and save confirmation emails, venue addresses and an offline map. Keep a charged power bank with you if transport tickets and reservations are on your phone.
If your home plan does not include Austria, OpenSim Austria plans provide a prepaid option for live routing, booking messages and meeting friends. On October 17, the public catalog listed 3 GB for 15 days at USD 3, with top-up supported on that plan.
Its practical advantage is a defined allowance for moving between locations, with an eligible top-up if you need more data. It does not book a tour, include public transport or guarantee reception in every basement studio. Check your existing roaming allowance before buying another plan.
Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and read the installation timing guide. For a longer family trip, our Austria with kids guide covers the wider route rather than this festival's individual bookings.
Sources and updates
The linked festival, venue and transport information was checked on October 17, 2026. Individual admission requirements and booking confirmations take precedence over broad festival descriptions. Recheck your chosen sessions before travelling. Update this guide for material changes to reservations, languages, addresses, access or transport; after November 13, treat this edition as historical.
