Athens Flying Week takes place at Tanagra Air Base on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6, 2026. Public gates open at 9 a.m. on both days. The current ticket listing runs until 8:30 p.m. on Saturday and 6 p.m. on Sunday, but the flying order remains a draft and can change for weather or operational reasons.
The difficult part is the location. Tanagra is outside Athens, the official coach is a separate one-way ticket, the railway option ends with an advertised 30-minute walk, and the free car parks are unpaved. Choose the journey home before choosing a ticket area. A shaded seat is less useful if the last practical return leaves before the display you came to see.

The short answer: use the official coach from Doukissis Plakentias if you are staying in Athens and do not want to drive. Book the outbound and return legs separately. Drive only if everyone is comfortable with dirt parking and a busy exit. Save the ticket, event map, flying programme and return route offline. Bring sun protection, water, hearing protection and only equipment allowed in your ticket section.

Choose Saturday or Sunday around the return journey
Saturday is the longer public day. The current ticket listing runs from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and the published coach returns leave Tanagra at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. It gives you more time around the static display and trade area, but it also demands a later journey back to Athens.
Sunday is more compact. The current event listing ends at 6 p.m., with return coaches at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Families who prefer an earlier finish may find Sunday easier. Anyone choosing the 4:30 p.m. coach needs to accept that the day will end before the public ticket window does.
Do not choose by lineup headlines alone. The organizer says Saturday and Sunday can have different flying programmes, and the programme itself is marked as draft. Start with these three questions:
- Which return coach or drive-home window can you realistically use?
- Is there one confirmed aircraft you would be disappointed to miss?
- Do you need shade, a numbered seat or extra room for camera equipment?
Check the official airshow programme again on the morning of your visit. A screenshot taken a week earlier is evidence of the old plan, not the day's running order.
Pick the ticket area for comfort, not status
The current seller separates Public F, unshaded Seats, Seat & Shadow, VIP and Spotters areas. Exact availability and prices can move, so use the live seat map rather than a price copied into an old guide.

Public F suits visitors who want flexibility and can manage their own chair, sun protection and ground conditions. Seat & Shadow is the clearer choice for someone who needs predictable shade. An unshaded numbered seat solves the problem of holding a place, not the problem of September sun.
The organizer permits visitors to leave an organized seating area for the shared restaurants, toilets, exhibition and static display, then return to that section. Keep the correct ticket accessible because each zone has its own control point.
The official coach is the simplest route from Athens

Buy both legs deliberately. A ticket for Athens to Tanagra does not reserve the return. Match the date as well as the direction, then save both QR codes to the phone and to a second place such as the device wallet or a travel companion's phone.
Allow time to reach Doukissis Plakentias. It is not central Syntagma, and an airport hotel may not be closer once transfers are counted. Check the live Line 3 route and planned work through the Athens transport information service before setting the alarm.
The train route needs a second plan
The organizer lists rail to Oinoi station, followed by about a 30-minute walk to the entrance. That can work for a fit adult carrying little in mild weather. It is a weaker option for young children, mobility limitations, heavy camera bags or the hottest part of the afternoon.
Do not assume a frequent urban service. Check the dated journey in both directions on Hellenic Train, including the final service you can actually catch after walking out of the base. A route that works in the morning can fail as a same-day plan if the return gap is long or the display runs late.
The event's current ticket document also says pedestrians and taxi passengers are carried from the Hellenic Aerospace Industry entrance gate to the event area by a dedicated internal shuttle. That does not turn the railway into a door-to-door service. You still need to reach the designated gate and follow staff instructions.
Driving: free parking, dirt surfaces and a slow exit
General parking is free inside the airbase and close to the public viewing area. The organizer states that the parking fields are unpaved. Motorcycle parking has a hard-surface section, but the approach from the parking entrance is still unpaved.
That changes what to bring. Low-clearance vehicles, wheelchairs with narrow front casters, lightweight strollers and rolling camera cases can struggle on loose or dusty ground. Dry weather produces dust; rain can turn the same surface into mud. Keep closed shoes in the car even if you plan to wear sandals elsewhere in Greece.
VIP, Seat & Shadow, Spotters, press and disabled visitors use separate parking and an alternate base entrance. Follow the ticket instructions instead of routing every vehicle to the general entrance shown on a map app.
Expect the exit to be slower than the arrival. Thousands of visitors leaving a controlled military site cannot disperse like shoppers from an ordinary car park. Before the show begins:
- drop a pin on the exact parking row;
- photograph the nearest marker and the direction of the exit;
- download the route back to your accommodation;
- agree whether the group waits at the vehicle or at a named on-site point;
- keep enough fuel for idling and a diversion.
Do not follow an improvised shortcut across the base perimeter. Use the signed exit and current staff direction, even when a navigation app suggests a faster road.
What to bring and what will be checked
The organizer recommends hats, sunscreen, sunglasses and comfortable shoes. Food outlets sell water, soft drinks, snacks and ice cream. Bringing your own refillable water and a simple snack still reduces the time spent in a queue, subject to the current entry rules.
Backpacks, large bags and coolers receive additional security checks. Arrive early if you need to carry camera equipment, children's supplies or medical items. A smaller, clearly organized bag is easier to inspect and easier to keep out of other visitors' way.
Personal equipment is tied to the ticket section. Public F1 visitors may bring equipment such as chairs, but staff can move umbrellas or other items that block sightlines or create a safety problem. Organized ticket areas do not allow personal umbrellas, portable coolers, chairs, tables or similar equipment.
Keep these items near the top of the bag:
- ticket and photo identification;
- sunscreen and a hat with a secure fit;
- hearing protection for adults and children;
- water and any permitted medication;
- a light layer for the evening return;
- a small power bank and charging cable;
- a printed return plan if the group has one phone.
Heat and aircraft noise deserve a real plan
An open airfield offers little natural shade. Check the Hellenic National Meteorological Service warnings on the morning of the event, not a generic monthly average. A high temperature at 2 p.m. feels worse on an exposed surface than it does in a shaded Athens street.
Use the static display, food area and quieter intervals to break up long periods in direct sun. Families should set a time for water and shade rather than waiting for a child to complain. If a ticket section does not include shade, bring only the sun equipment that section allows.
Fast jets are loud even when spectators expect them. Foam earplugs help adults who can fit them correctly. Children generally need well-fitting earmuffs made for their head size. Keep the protection on before a display begins; waiting for the first pass defeats the point.
Anyone with sensory sensitivity should avoid positioning directly beside loudspeakers or the busiest static-display queue. The official programme can help identify quieter windows, but aircraft substitutions and delays mean the sound pattern is never completely predictable.
Children, accessibility and animals
Children under three are listed for free admission in the current ticket document. Other child prices vary by section. Check the live seller page because a public-area child ticket and a shaded-seat child ticket are not the same product.
The static A400M is advertised as open for visitors to see inside, while the broader static exhibition includes military and civil aircraft. Treat access as a queue rather than a guaranteed timed activity. Aircraft availability can change, and a child who dislikes enclosed spaces may prefer viewing from outside.
For visitors with a documented disability rate above 67 percent, the organizer advertises a 50 percent ticket discount and the same discount for one companion, subject to availability in specified sections. Ask about the route from parking to the chosen section, toilets and the static display rather than treating a parking badge as proof that every area is step free.
Dogs and other animals are not allowed in the exhibition areas. Do not bring a pet expecting to leave it in a parked car; September heat makes that unsafe.
The 2026 lineup is strong, but it is not a promise
The organizer's current announcement includes the Fursan Al Emarat team with L-15 aircraft, a Finnish F-18 demonstration, Spanish and German Eurofighter appearances, German Tornado and Austrian PC-7 displays, Hellenic Air Force aircraft, parachute teams and historic aircraft. The static list includes an Italian F-35 and Belgian A400M.
That is useful for deciding whether the event fits your interests. It is not a minute-by-minute contract. Military availability, technical serviceability and weather can alter an airshow after tickets are sold. Check the confirmations page, then the draft programme, then any same-day organizer notice. Give the newest dated source priority.
Photography plans should remain flexible too. Spotters sections are designed around serious camera use, but a public ticket still allows ordinary photography from its designated area. Keep long lenses controlled in crowds, do not block emergency lanes, and never cross a barrier for a clearer angle.
