Berlin Marathon 2026 guide: Expo, waves and spectators
The Berlin Marathon takes place on Sunday, September 27, 2026. Runners start in six waves from 8:45 a.m. on Strasse des 17. Juni, after the handbike and wheelchair starts. The biggest mistakes happen before the course begins: leaving race-material collection until the busiest Expo period, assuming every runner has clothing drop, or treating a supporter plan as if Berlin's trains will be empty.

The short answer: runners must collect their own race material at Tempelhof Airport between September 24 and 26, keep the athlete wristband on, and enter at the time assigned to their bib block. The included Berlin ABC transport ticket belongs to the participant, not the supporter. Spectators should choose one course position and the finish instead of attempting five or six train transfers through race-day crowds.
This guide was checked on August 29, 2026 against the organizer's current race-day, Expo, course, app and spectator pages. The official 2026 app was still marked "available soon." The detailed road map and event instructions can change, so save the latest versions again during race week.

What changed at the end of August
The organizer published the six exact runner waves and closed changes to submitted best times at 11:59 p.m. CET on August 27. A runner cannot change the assigned performance group at the Expo. Starting in a later, slower group is allowed, but moving forward is not.
The same day, the organizer announced that defending champion and world record holder Sabastian Sawe had withdrawn through injury. That changes the elite race, not the participant timetable. Runners should keep using the wave and entrance details printed on their own bib rather than expecting a schedule change because one athlete withdrew.
Collect race material before Saturday becomes crowded
Every participant must collect race material in person at the MARATHON EXPO at Tempelhof Airport. Another person cannot collect it, even with written authorization. The organizer requires the emailed Start Card and a photo ID such as a passport, identity card or driving licence.
| Day | Expo hours | Practical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Thursday, September 24 | 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. | Useful for early arrivals and generally better than Saturday |
| Friday, September 25 | 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. | Friday morning is the organizer's lower-queue recommendation |
| Saturday, September 26 | 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. | Works for late arrivals, but can be crowded |
Participants can reserve an Expo collection slot in their SCC EVENTS account until September 21. The organizer warns that Friday afternoon and Saturday can be busy enough for temporary hall-capacity controls. A Saturday flight delay therefore has more consequences than a missed shopping session. It can leave no later collection window.
The Expo is at Platz der Luftbruecke 5. U6 to Platz der Luftbruecke, followed by about a ten-minute walk, is the published rail approach. M43 and 248 buses also serve the area. There is no general event parking.
Do not take a large suitcase into the Expo queue
The Expo permits bags up to 55 x 40 x 25 cm. Larger luggage is not allowed inside and must go to the paid baggage facility. Travelers arriving directly from the airport should leave a large suitcase at their accommodation or allow time for the separate storage process.
Race-material collection also supplies the athlete wristband. The bib and wristband are both required for the participant-only start and finish area. Keep the wristband on until the race is over and the runner has left that controlled area.
Use the participant transport ticket correctly
The participant entry includes a four-day Berlin public transport ticket for fare zones A, B and C. The organizer's detailed Expo page states that it is valid from 12:00 a.m. on September 24 until 3:00 a.m. on September 28. The Start Card email will contain the final usage instructions.
The ticket is for the registered participant only. It cannot be transferred to a partner, friend or family member. A spectator traveling with the runner needs a separate BVG or regional fare for every journey.
Useful stations around the start and finish include:
- U-Bahn: Unter den Linden, Brandenburger Tor, Bundestag and Potsdamer Platz.
- S-Bahn: Brandenburger Tor, Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Potsdamer Platz.
- Regional trains: Berlin Hauptbahnhof and Potsdamer Platz.
There is no single best station for every block. The entrance, clothing choice and crowd route matter. Check BVG and S-Bahn Berlin on the morning rather than relying only on a journey saved weeks earlier.
Follow the entrance time and wave printed for the bib
Runner access begins well before each start. Platz der Republik, opposite the Reichstag, is the main entrance and accepts all runners. Bremer Weg is a restricted shortcut only for runners with a purple bib, a poncho symbol and no block K assignment. Anyone who is not certain should use the main entrance.
| Bib block | Event-site entry | Runner start |
|---|---|---|
| A, B, C | 7:00 a.m. | 8:45 a.m. |
| D, E | 7:30 a.m. | 9:05 a.m. |
| F, G | 8:00 a.m. | 9:33 a.m. |
| H | 8:30 a.m. | 10:02 a.m. |
| J | 8:30 a.m. | 10:12 a.m. |
| K | 9:00 a.m. | 10:27 a.m. |
The organizer controls access to the groups. A runner may move back to a slower group but cannot use the Expo to negotiate a faster one after the August 27 deadline.
Plan the morning backwards from the site-entry time, not merely from the gun time. Include the final train, the walk from the station, security, toilets, clothing handling and the route inside Tiergarten. A late-wave runner should not copy an 8:45 starter's alarm or entrance plan.
Clothing drop and poncho are different bookings
Berlin does not provide an ordinary bag drop to every entrant. Clothing drop is available only to runners who booked that extra and receive the official transparent bag and label at the Expo. The booked services are marked on the bib.
Runners with the poncho symbol cannot drop clothing at the start. They receive the reusable warming poncho after the finish instead. The choice is binding, so a private backpack is not a workaround. Luggage is prohibited inside the start and finish area.
If a poncho runner wants an extra layer before starting, the organizer accepts clean warm clothing at the marked donation points. The Berliner Stadtmission collects it for reuse. Do not place a phone, passport, room key or medication in a donated jacket.
The safest split is simple:
- Carry only permitted race equipment through the participant entrance.
- Put post-race valuables with a trusted supporter or in secure accommodation storage.
- Photograph the bib, hotel address and emergency contact before leaving.
- Agree on a meeting point that does not depend on live tracking.
Know the time limit and course services
The official time limit is 6 hours 15 minutes from the individual start-line crossing. There is also a 3:40 p.m. cutoff at kilometer 33 and an official finish closure at 5 p.m. Participants outside those limits must use the organizer's transport rather than continuing on the closed competition route.
Water points are listed at 5, 12, 17.5, 22.5, 27.5, 32.5, 34.5, 38 and 40 kilometers. Full refreshment stations with water, fruit, tea and the named event drink are listed at 9, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 36 kilometers. The organizer also lists gel at 27.5 kilometers. Runners should use training to decide what their stomach tolerates; the location list is not medical or nutrition advice.
The interactive course map can show the course and points of interest. Save a screenshot of the start and finish map as well. An interactive map is less useful when the phone is low on power or a crowded train delays the data connection.
Build a spectator plan that works in crowded trains
The start and finish event site is for participants. Spectators can watch from public course areas, but supporters should not plan to stand beside the runner in the assembly zone.
The organizer provides free standing grandstands shortly before the finish. Entry is beside the Brandenburg Gate. Capacity is not guaranteed, and the only finish-area course crossing is at Pariser Platz under staff control. A supporter who arrives late may spend the decisive minutes trying to reach the correct side of the barriers.
Recent public runner discussions repeatedly ask whether a supporter can see someone at five or six points and still reach the finish. The practical answer is that such a plan is fragile. Race-day U-Bahn and S-Bahn services carry runners, spectators and ordinary Sunday passengers. One delayed transfer can break every later stop.
A more reliable plan is:
- Skip the participant-only start area or watch from a public section after the opening kilometers.
- Choose one middle-course location near a station that does not require crossing the route.
- Leave that point early enough to reach the finish side before the expected runner.
- Treat live tracking as an estimate based on recorded timing points, not exact GPS.
- Use the family meeting point if finish viewing does not work.
The official family meeting point is in front of the Paul Loebe House, organized by the first letter of the runner's surname. Store that place in both phones. Add a second fallback for a fixed time in case one device is flat or the tracking feed lags.
Use the 2026 marathon app when it is released
The official marathon app page was still marked "available soon" on August 29. The organizer says the 2026 app will provide:
- Tracking for up to 25 runners and inline skaters.
- Live results and leaderboards.
- An interactive map with cheering points and directions.
- Push notices during the weekend.
- Expo information and the floor plan.
Participants will use the registration ID from the Start Card. Supporters do not need to log in. The organizer also says users should delete an app left from a previous year before installing the new version. The minimum versions are iOS 16 and Android 10.
Do not download an unofficial app with a similar name just because the current one is not yet live. Follow the organizer's page to the correct store listing once it appears.
Prepare for road closures and a weather change
The route crosses central Berlin, so road access and surface transport cannot operate like an ordinary Sunday. The organizer maintains an event road-closure page and interactive route map. Drivers, taxis and airport transfers should use those current controls rather than assuming a cross-city route will remain open.
The race is scheduled to proceed in normal weather. The organizer reserves the right to change plans if the German Weather Service issues a warning. A useful weather decision belongs in race week, not four weeks before the start. Check DWD warnings, then pack the layer or sun protection the short-range forecast supports.
Mobile data for runners and supporters
The marathon app, BVG departures, S-Bahn changes, digital booking references and family messages all need a working connection at different points in the weekend. That does not mean mobile data should carry the whole plan. Large crowds can slow any network, and a Roaming eSIM cannot guarantee capacity at a packed finish.
Before travel, save the Start Card, Expo slot, bib details, hotel address, course map and meeting point offline. A runner can then keep a Roaming eSIM for live transport and messages while preserving the usual SIM for its normal number, where the phone supports dual-SIM use.
Choose the Germany Roaming eSIM for a Germany-only trip. The Germany product page owns plan-shopping terms and shows the current live catalog. Travelers continuing into other listed countries can compare the Europe 33 areas Roaming eSIM, Europe Roaming eSIM or Global 120 areas Roaming eSIM against the actual route.
Use the travel data calculator for maps, messaging and video use. Check phone compatibility and when to install a Roaming eSIM before departure. The Germany with kids guide owns family itinerary planning, while the IFA Berlin 2026 guide covers the separate early-September trade show.
Ten Berlin Marathon 2026 questions answered
When is the Berlin Marathon 2026?
The marathon is Sunday, September 27, 2026. The Expo and race-material collection run from Thursday, September 24 through Saturday, September 26.
What time does the Berlin Marathon start?
Handbike and wheelchair categories begin at 8:20, 8:26 and 8:29 a.m. Runners start in six waves from 8:45 to 10:27 a.m. The bib block controls the individual wave.
Can someone else collect my race number?
No. The registered runner must collect race material personally with the Start Card and photo ID. The organizer does not accept proxy collection or postal delivery.
Can I collect my bib on race morning?
No official race-morning collection is listed. The final Expo collection window ends at 7 p.m. on Saturday, subject to change. International arrivals should leave enough delay protection before that cutoff.
Is public transport free for Berlin Marathon runners?
The participant package includes a Berlin ABC ticket for the event period. It is not transferable. Supporters need their own valid ticket.
Can I change my Berlin Marathon start wave at the Expo?
No. Best-time and group changes closed on August 27. A runner can start farther back in a slower group but cannot move forward to a faster block.
Can every runner drop a bag?
No. Only runners who pre-booked clothing drop receive the official bag and label. Runners with the poncho option cannot substitute a private bag.
Where can spectators watch the finish?
The organizer provides free standing grandstands shortly before the finish, with entry beside Brandenburg Gate. Spectators are not allowed inside the participant start and finish site, and capacity at the public standing area is not promised.
How do I track a Berlin Marathon runner?
The official app is due to track up to 25 participants. Its 2026 version was still marked available soon on August 29. Tracking also depends on the runner's public or code-based privacy setting.
Where should runners meet family after the race?
Use the official family meeting point in front of the Paul Loebe House, under the sign matching the first letter of the runner's surname. Agree on a timed backup point as well.
