Belgium strike October 12: trains, airports and Brussels
Belgium has a public-sector strike planned for Monday, October 12, 2026. Public transport and other services may be disrupted, but SNCB, Eurostar, Brussels Airport, Charleroi Airport and the city transport operators have not announced a blanket shutdown. Keep confirmed bookings, build a backup for the last leg, and check the exact operator from the evening of October 11.

The practical answer: do not cancel a Belgium trip because of a national headline. A strike date is confirmed, but your train, flight or metro is not cancelled until its operator says so. Rebuild the journey in the official planner 24 hours before departure and keep one road or coach alternative for an airport or international connection.
This guide was checked on September 28, 2026. The strike can still be narrowed, suspended or followed by operator-specific plans. A separate large demonstration is expected in central Brussels on Friday, October 9. The two dates need different plans.

The UK government Belgium travel advice added the October 9 demonstration and October 12 strike on September 25. The CGSP public-services union published a national strike notice for October 12 the previous day.
Neither notice is a passenger timetable. Belgium's national railway and urban transport companies publish their own operating plans closer to an action. That delay is frustrating, but it reflects how minimum service is calculated from the staff available to work.
What is confirmed and what is not
Confirmed as of September 28
- October 12 is a planned public-sector strike date.
- Public transport and other public services may be affected.
- An October 9 demonstration is expected in central Brussels.
- SNCB has a formal minimum-service process for an approved rail strike.
- Planned engineering works will already reduce some train links to Brussels Airport from October 3 to 18.
Not confirmed as of September 28
- that every domestic train will stop;
- that Eurostar will cancel all Brussels services;
- that either Brussels Airport or Brussels South Charleroi Airport will close;
- that every STIB metro, tram and bus will stop;
- that De Lijn or TEC will suspend its whole network; or
- that border control, museums, schools or municipal offices will all follow one national closure plan.
Treat any post claiming a complete shutdown as unverified unless it links to the named operator. Previous Belgian strikes show what can happen, but they do not establish the October 12 timetable.
Will SNCB trains run on October 12?
Some trains may run under an alternative plan if an approved rail strike goes ahead. The exact service normally appears late because staff must declare whether they will work before SNCB can build a feasible timetable.
The SNCB strike information page explains the sequence:
- A strike request must be filed at least eight working days before the action.
- Essential staff declare their intention at least 72 hours before it starts.
- SNCB builds an alternative plan from the available staff.
- The working timetable may be visible only from the evening before travel.
Search the SNCB app or journey planner again on Sunday evening, October 11. If the planner shows a train for October 12 under the alternative plan, use that result rather than an old PDF, calendar entry or screenshot.
Allow more time at Brussels-Midi, Brussels-Central and Brussels-North. Reduced frequency can make the train that runs much busier than usual. Do not plan a tight transfer from a domestic train to Eurostar, an airport check-in deadline or the last connection of the day.
Passengers who need station assistance should reconfirm it with SNCB. Its strike guidance asks passengers with reduced mobility to request assistance through the contact center at least 24 hours before travel, but availability still depends on the operating plan.
Eurostar and international trains are separate checks
A Belgian public-sector strike does not automatically cancel every Eurostar. International trains have their own staffing, infrastructure and operating decisions. The vulnerable part of an itinerary may instead be the domestic connection into Brussels-Midi.
Use this order:
- Open the Eurostar booking and service update.
- Check the train number, not only the route.
- Rebuild the domestic journey to Brussels-Midi in the SNCB planner.
- Protect the international check-in cutoff with a larger buffer.
- If the domestic connection is weak, compare an earlier arrival in Brussels or an overnight stay.
Do not assume that a ticket from Antwerp, Ghent or Bruges will automatically move you to a different Eurostar departure. Domestic Belgian tickets and an international reservation have different conditions. Ask the seller or operator before buying a replacement.

Brussels Airport has a second problem: planned rail works
Brussels Airport has not announced an October 12 closure. The airport journey is still more complicated because rail works from October 3 to 18 reduce the number of trains able to use Brussels Airport-Zaventem.

On October 12, check these as two separate layers:

Do not route automatically to Zaventem village station unless the planner shows the connecting bus and enough time. A taxi may also face higher demand, so compare it before the morning rush rather than after a train disappears from the board.
What about Brussels South Charleroi Airport?
Charleroi Airport is not the same airport as Brussels Airport-Zaventem. It lies south of Brussels and depends on a different mix of coaches, road transfers and local transport.
No blanket October 12 airport closure was confirmed when this guide was checked. Monitor the airline and Charleroi Airport's live flight page. If the flight still operates, verify the coach or transfer separately and leave margin for road traffic.
Charleroi also experienced a separate air-traffic-control dispute in September. Do not reuse a September cancellation notice as evidence for October 12. The public-sector strike, airport operations and any local air-traffic-control action require separate confirmation.
If an airline cancels, use its written rebooking or refund process before purchasing a costly replacement. Keep screenshots, receipts and the exact cancellation message. EU air-passenger rights still require choices and care in qualifying cases, while fixed cash compensation depends on the cause and circumstances.
Brussels metro, tram and bus checks
STIB-MIVB had not posted an October 12 strike plan when checked on September 28. Its standing strike page says affected lines are estimated the evening before and confirmed on the morning of a strike, shortly before 06:00.
That means a normal route shown two weeks early is not proof it will run. On October 12:
- check STIB-MIVB before leaving;
- use Floya to compare metro, tram, bus, walking, shared mobility and taxi options;
- expect lower frequency even when a line operates; and
- choose a walking meeting point away from the busiest station entrance.
De Lijn, which serves Flanders and some airport connections, said services were running normally when checked. Its strike and disruption page is the place to recheck closer to October 12. TEC publishes disruption notices for Wallonia. A national date does not guarantee equal participation in every depot or city.
For the October 9 demonstration, central Brussels is the main concern. Avoid assuming the march follows the route used by an earlier protest. Watch Brussels Mobility, local police and STIB notices for the confirmed route and diversions. Brussels-North, the inner ring and Brussels-Midi have been affected by previous large marches, but that history is planning context rather than a confirmed October 9 closure map.

Avoid booking three speculative alternatives. One refundable backup is more useful than several non-refundable tickets that may all depend on the same road or station.
When to check each service
Seven days before
Check whether SNCB, Eurostar, STIB-MIVB, De Lijn, TEC, the airports or your airline has published a specific notice. Confirm hotel cancellation deadlines and move an essential public appointment if the office offers an alternative.
Seventy-two hours before
Rail staff declarations begin to shape the minimum-service plan. Recheck the route and any booked assistance. Download offline maps for Brussels, the airport and the destination city.
The evening before
Rebuild the complete trip from the true starting point to the final destination. Do not check only Brussels-Midi to Bruges if the first leg starts at an airport. Save screenshots of the operator status and working itinerary.
Before leaving
Check the train or flight number again. A service can change after the alternative plan is loaded. Keep the phone charged and carry the booking reference, hotel address and one offline contact number.

Install before travel while a stable connection is available, keep the QR code offline and leave the usual SIM enabled if it is needed for bank or booking verification messages.

Book a flexible or cancellable transfer when missing the flight or international train would be costly. A taxi is a backup, not proof of a faster journey if city traffic and demand rise.
