Bristol Balloon Fiesta 2026 guide: ascents, travel and parking

The Bristol International Balloon Fiesta runs from Friday, August 7 to Sunday, August 9, 2026 at Ashton Court Estate. Entry is free. The mass ascents are scheduled for 6am and 6pm each day, with Nightglow at 9pm on Friday and Saturday. Every balloon flight remains subject to weather.

That last point should shape the whole trip. Do not build a costly weekend around one 6pm ascent and assume it will happen. Give yourself at least two possible ascent windows, keep a Bristol backup plan, and check the official event channels before starting the final journey to Ashton Court.

Transport needs the same care. The dedicated shuttle begins at 10am, so it cannot get you to a 6am ascent. Official parking must be booked in advance and is single entry. The Clifton Suspension Bridge closes to pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles from 6pm to midnight on Friday and Saturday.

Which Fiesta session should you choose?

The right session depends on whether you care most about seeing balloons fly, watching Nightglow or taking children for a full day of entertainment. Those are three different visits.

Is the 6am ascent worth the early start?

Yes, when seeing balloons inflate and launch is the main reason for going. The launch field is quieter than it is before the evening programme, and the low morning light can be useful for photographs. Is Nightglow the same as a mass ascent?

No. During Nightglow, tethered balloons fire their burners in time with music after dark. They do not launch across Bristol. It is a separate spectacle and a better fallback for visitors who care about the evening atmosphere more than seeing the flight path.

Nightglow is scheduled for 9pm on Friday and Saturday. The Clifton Suspension Bridge closes at 6pm on both nights and reopens at midnight. Do not plan to walk back across it after the show. Use Festival Way, the booked shuttle or another route that remains open.

Build a weather-proof Fiesta plan

Hot air balloons need suitable wind, visibility and ground conditions. A dry forecast alone does not guarantee a launch. The final call belongs to the pilots and event team, not to a weather app or a visitor watching from a hill.

Use this decision sequence:

1. Check the official programme for the scheduled session.
2. Look at the Met Office Bristol forecast for rain, wind and changing temperatures.
3. Check the Fiesta's official social channels shortly before departure for the flight decision.
4. If the ascent is cancelled, decide whether the rest of the Ashton Court programme is worth the journey.
5. Keep the next possible ascent and one city activity ready as alternatives.

Do not drive toward Ashton Court after an ascent is cancelled just because an unofficial account says the balloons might fly later. The site remains open with family activities, music, displays and food, but a cancelled launch is not automatically delayed.

What can you do if no balloons fly?

The 2026 programme includes the In The Clouds walk-in balloon experience, historic and model balloons, a family zone, stage entertainment, engineering activities, aircraft displays and fairground rides. Some elements are free while rides, food and hospitality cost extra.

That may be enough for a family day. It may not satisfy somebody travelling across the country only to photograph a mass ascent. Be honest about which visitor you are before paying for a hotel or parking.

A city backup can include the harbourside, SS Great Britain, M Shed or a Bristol street-art walk. Check each venue's own opening and booking information rather than treating this list as a promise that tickets will remain available.

The 2026 timetable that matters most

The programme is much larger than the balloon schedule. These are the decision points that change how you travel and how long you stay.

All ascent and programme times remain subject to change. The official shuttle page lists service from 10am to 9pm toward the site each day. Return buses run until 11:30pm on Friday and Saturday and 9:30pm on Sunday.

How to get to Ashton Court

There is no single best route. Dawn visitors, daytime families and Nightglow crowds need different plans.

Dedicated Stagecoach shuttle

The Fiesta shuttle links Bristol Temple Meads, the city centre and Ashton Court from 10am. The organizer recommends booking in advance and sells day, weekend and group options. Read the ticket description carefully because some single tickets are return-only and valid after a specified time.

Use the shuttle for a daytime arrival or Nightglow. Do not buy it as the route to a 6am ascent. After Nightglow, expect a queue even with a valid ticket. A ticket provides transport, not a reserved departure the moment the show ends.

m2 MetroBus

The m2 runs between Temple Meads and Long Ashton Park & Ride on Friday and Saturday. The first departures are listed after 6am, and the last buses leave Long Ashton at 8:50pm. It does not operate on Sunday during the Fiesta.

That makes it useful for some daytime visits, not for Nightglow or an on-time dawn arrival. Check Travelwest before travel because road management can affect stops and running times.

Train and walk

Parson Street is the closest railway station listed by the event, followed by a 30-minute walk. Temple Meads has more rail connections but is much farther from Ashton Court. From Temple Meads, continue by shuttle, bicycle or a longer walk via the city.

Leave time for the final slope and event entrance. A map estimate that ends at the estate boundary does not tell you how long it will take to reach the viewing area.

Walking and cycling

Festival Way follows National Cycle Route 33 from central Bristol to Ashton Court. The route is useful when roads are congested, and official bicycle parking is available near the Mansion House and Fallow Deer Park.

The Clifton Suspension Bridge is another familiar walking route, but not on Friday or Saturday evening. It closes to all pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles from 6pm to midnight. Save Festival Way offline before leaving rather than asking a map app to improvise during the closure.

Taxi or private hire

The designated drop-off and pickup point is Long Ashton Park & Ride. Drivers should follow event signs and should not stop on a closed road or residential street. The park-and-ride site is a drop-off point during the Fiesta, not free visitor parking.

Agree on the correct pickup location before separating from the driver. After Nightglow, app demand and traffic can make the quoted wait change quickly.

Driving and official parking

Every official parking ticket must be bought in advance and permits one entry. If you leave during the day, you cannot assume the same ticket will let the vehicle return for Nightglow. Follow event signs even when they differ from the usual sat-nav route.

There is no on-site campsite, campervan stay or overnight parking. Book actual accommodation if attending more than one day. Do not leave a vehicle in nearby residential streets and expect the evening restrictions to work around it.

Where should you stay?

Choose accommodation around the journey you can make at 5am or after 10pm, not around a generic list of Bristol neighbourhoods.

Bedminster and Southville

These areas can shorten the approach to Festival Way and make a dawn walk more realistic than a room north of the city. The exact distance still matters. Check the walking route from the actual address to the event entrance before booking.

City centre and Temple Meads

This is the easiest base for national rail, the dedicated shuttle and Bristol attractions if a flight is cancelled. It is less convenient for a 6am arrival because the shuttle has not started. A pre-arranged taxi or a long early walk may be needed.

Clifton

Clifton is close on a map and gives access to city viewpoints. The bridge closure changes the Friday and Saturday evening journey. A room that looks ideal for the launch field can become awkward after Nightglow unless the return avoids the bridge.

Long Ashton

Long Ashton is closest to the south side of the estate, but accommodation is limited and local roads are managed for residents and event traffic. Confirm the pedestrian route with the host. Do not assume a nearby postcode gives access through every gate.

Should you watch from outside Ashton Court?

An outside viewpoint avoids the launch-field crowd, but it trades certainty for space. You will not see the inflation and launch sequence, and the balloons may travel away from your chosen hill.

Older local viewing guides commonly mention Brandon Hill, Bristol Harbourside, Troopers Hill and Clifton Down. They can provide a broad city view, not a guaranteed balloon view. Wind direction determines the flight path, and even a successful ascent may stay low on the opposite side of the city.

Use an outside viewpoint when you already want to spend time there or when avoiding Ashton Court matters more than seeing every stage of the launch. Do not tell children they will definitely watch balloons pass overhead.

Taking children to the Fiesta

The Fiesta can work well for children, but a dawn-to-Nightglow day is too long for many families. Pick one main balloon session and a smaller block of activities.

The official programme lists a family zone from 8am to 6pm, storytelling, model balloons and hands-on activities. The event also provides a baby changing and feeding tent. Contact wristbands for children are available from the Lost Children tent near the Medical Centre.

Use a fixed meeting point that a child can identify without a phone. Dress younger children so they are easy to spot in a crowd, write an adult's number on the wristband and take a photograph of what they are wearing that day.

For a pushchair, remember that most of Ashton Court is grass. Morning dew, rain and heavy footfall can make the surface wet or muddy. A compact pushchair with small hard wheels may be difficult away from temporary tracks.

Accessibility at Ashton Court

The event site is rolling parkland with grass, some tarmac roads and temporary trackway. The organizer warns that wet grass can be uneven and slippery.

Accessible parking uses Orange Gate and requires both an advance parking ticket and a Blue Badge, with the badge holder present. The dedicated accessible viewing area is free but should be pre-booked. Each ticket is for one disabled visitor and one carer, subject to the organizer's stated capacity rules.

Accessible toilets are located at all three public toilet blocks. An AccessoLoo facility with a hoist is listed near the event entrance. Guide dogs are welcome. Review the official accessibility page before booking transport because a smooth route to the estate does not remove the grass approach inside it.

What to bring

Pack for waiting on grass rather than for a short city show:

• Waterproof footwear that can handle wet grass
• A lightweight waterproof layer
• Warm layers for the 6am wait and the walk home after dark
• Sunscreen, a hat and an empty refillable bottle
• A blanket or compact seat if permitted by the final event guidance
• A charged phone and small power bank
• Offline copies of parking, shuttle and accommodation details
• Essential medication and any mobility-device charging cable you need

The event prohibits drones over the site. Do not bring one for an aerial photograph. Keep bags with you, and check the current visitor guidance before packing any item that security might restrict.

General entry to Ashton Court is free. Parking, shuttle tickets, hospitality, food, fairground rides and passenger balloon flights are separate purchases. Do not pay somebody outside the official channels for a general admission ticket.
