Canterbury Festival 2026: shows, seats and access checks

Canterbury Festival runs from October 16 to 31, 2026. Choose your performance before arranging the journey: Anna Lapwood opens the cathedral programme on October 16, Circa's Eternity has seven performances on October 20-24, and Family Takeover takes place at the Malthouse on October 31. If you need lift access, check before booking: the festival currently reports the Malthouse lift out of service.
The festival programme combines music, circus, talks and family activities across different venues. A cathedral concert, a free daytime installation and a children's workshop involve different tickets and travel plans. You can make a short visit around one of them without trying to cover the whole programme.
Which Canterbury Festival visit suits your trip?
| Your priority | A programme option | Decision to make first |
|---|---|---|
| An organ concert in the cathedral | Anna Lapwood, October 16 at 20:00 | Whether your seat provides a screen view or listening only |
| Contemporary circus | Circa: Eternity, October 20-24 | Performance time, age advice and the journey home |
| A free daytime stop | A Mile in My Shoes, October 16-31, except October 26 | Whether its personal stories suit your group |
| A family visit | Family Takeover, October 31 | The individual activity's booking, room and access arrangements |
Check live availability through the event page before making a non-refundable travel booking. A programme listing or a visible booking link does not establish that seats remain.
Anna Lapwood: understand the Quire and listening seats
The October 16 concert listing advertises additional unreserved Quire seating at GBP34 including the GBP1.50 booking fee. These seats have no view of the screen. The organizer also warns that the full volume of the organ in this area may be uncomfortable for some listeners.
That differs from the central nave, where a video link helps the audience follow a performer who is largely out of sight at the organ console. Choose for how you want to experience the music, rather than assuming every cathedral ticket gives the same view.
The listing separately names a GBP10 under-30 Listening Seat. Do not confuse that product with the GBP34 Quire seat, or assume the lower price applies to every section. Read the selected seat description and eligibility before paying.
If seeing the performer or a screen is essential, resolve that question with the box office first. The least expensive available ticket is not necessarily the right ticket for your visit.
Circa's Eternity: seven performances across five nights
The official Eternity event page lists this cathedral schedule:
| Date | Published start times |
|---|---|
| October 20, 21 and 22 | 19:30 |
| October 23 and 24 | 19:15 and 21:30 |
This is contemporary circus, with aerial work and performers using a catwalk arrangement through the space. The approximately one-hour production uses a recording of Arvo Part's music by the Australian Chamber Orchestra, rather than a live orchestra. The recommended age is 10 and over.
The cathedral's event calendar lists tickets at GBP40-43.50 plus a GBP1.50 booking fee. Confirm the final total and section in the official booking flow; prices and remaining seats can change.
A 21:30 performance needs a different return plan from a 19:15 start. Check the train or bus you could realistically reach after leaving the venue, allowing for the walk and any assistance you need. Do that before buying, rather than relying on a general statement that Canterbury is an easy London day trip.
Festival admission also should not be treated as a cathedral sightseeing ticket. Check daytime visitor access separately if you want both a tour and an evening performance.
A free stop: A Mile in My Shoes
A Mile in My Shoes is a free drop-in installation at the corner of High Street and Best Lane. It runs from 11:00 to 16:00 during October 16-31, but is closed on Monday, October 26.
Visitors borrow a pair of shoes and listen to someone's story while walking. Some accounts cover adult subjects, including war, sex work and displacement, so choose with your group's interests and ages in mind.
This can fit a daytime visit before an evening event, provided you leave a gap for a meal. It does not require committing the entire day to paid performances. Keep the closure date in your plan if you are visiting during the festival's second week.
Family Takeover: check the room as well as the activity
The October 31 Family Takeover at the Malthouse includes both free and separately ticketed activities. The programme names a free Night Creatures workshop, Reading Room and Youth Music Ambassador recital. Free entry to one activity does not mean every session is free or that a ticketed event has space.
One specific option is Simon Watt: Look Up!, a science and space session at 11:00. Read its current admission details rather than assuming the whole day uses one ticket.
The festival's venue guidance reports that the Malthouse lift is out of service. Ground-floor access is available, but the balcony and upper-floor studios are affected, including Dance and Drama Studio activities during Family Takeover. Ask which room your chosen session uses before booking if stairs are a barrier.
Build the day around one or two activities that suit the children, with room for food and a slower arrival. The United Kingdom with kids guide covers wider family-trip choices; this page concentrates on the festival programme.
Booking fees, e-tickets and the under-30 scheme
The festival's booking guidance says brochure prices include booking fees. The fee varies by event from GBP1.50 to GBP2 per ticket, with the breakdown shown during purchase. Avoid adding it twice when comparing prices from different pages.
Online booking is available around the clock. The box office, 01227 457568, operates Monday to Friday, 10:00-17:00. Download e-tickets from the confirmation; they can be shown on a phone or printed. Door sales, when available, are card only.
The published policy does not allow exchanges or refunds unless an event is cancelled. Read the terms before committing to a journey. Contact the box office before purchase about access seating or an essential companion.
The under-30 scheme requires registration and account sign-in for limited GBP10 allocations. It does not cover every event or seat, and identification may be requested. If you are 30, ask the box office to confirm eligibility: the scheme and general booking pages currently describe the age boundary differently.
Match the address to the performance
Check the official venue guide before navigating. The Great Hall is at Kent College on Whitstable Road, CT2 9DT, rather than a central cathedral room. The Malthouse is at CT2 7JA.
The guide also says St Mary's Hall Studio Theatre is not wheelchair accessible and admits no latecomers; its toilets are outside the building. Cathedral wheelchair seating should be arranged with the box office.
For Malthouse visits, do not use the King's School Recreation Centre car park: the organizer warns that its gates lock. Confirm your actual parking location and collection arrangements, especially for an evening performance.
Canterbury by train, bus and on foot
The festival's travel page distinguishes the two railway stations. Canterbury West, used by services including London St Pancras connections, is about ten minutes' walk from the city centre. Canterbury East, with London Victoria connections, is about five minutes away. Those are city-centre estimates, not promised walking times to every festival door.
Use Southeastern's travel tools for the date and direction you need. Check the return as carefully as the outward trip, including changes and the final walk. A saved screenshot of an old timetable is not a current service check.
The festival points visitors to Stagecoach for local buses and the Triangle service for the Great Hall. Its travel page also links the Stagecoach app for journey planning, live information and mobile tickets. Keep the correct venue address alongside the event confirmation.
For a first visit, one performance and some unhurried city time is a reasonable day. Adding a coastal excursion before an evening show makes the schedule more fragile. If the late performance is your priority, compare an overnight stay with the actual last usable return rather than trying to force a day-trip plan.
Mobile data for Canterbury venue and return checks
Download the ticket file and save the venue address before leaving your accommodation. Keep your phone charged for admission and the return journey; a data allowance cannot help a flat battery. Check the forecast before walking between venues and carry what you need for waiting outdoors.
For visitors arriving from abroad, OpenSim's United Kingdom plans provide a separate prepaid data allowance for route checks and messages. On October 15, the public catalog listed 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76 with top-up support. Confirm the selected plan's current terms before purchase.
That can suit a trip where you want a fixed allowance and the option to add data to an eligible plan. If your usual mobile package already includes enough UK roaming, keeping it may be simpler. Mobile data does not guarantee ticket availability or change venue access restrictions.
Estimate your needs with the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility, and read the installation timing guide before departure. Keep offline copies even when you have a working connection.
Canterbury programme sources and updates
Dates, seating descriptions, prices and venue notices were checked against the linked organizer, cathedral and rail pages on October 15, 2026. Recheck your individual listing before travel, particularly the October 16 concert, Malthouse lift status, Circa performance time and October 26 installation closure. This guide will need revision for a changed programme or access notice and after the festival ends on October 31.
