The Staten Island Ferry Whitehall Terminal facade in Lower Manhattan in July 2019

The TCS New York City Marathon is Sunday, November 1, 2026. For this edition, runners select a transport mode and NYRR assigns a departure time. Use that assignment, collect your own bib at Javits on October 29-31, and treat bag pre-check as a separate stop. If your transport selection is missing, resolve it with NYRR rather than improvise on race morning.

Three reservations can look similar in a busy account dashboard: the race entry, the journey to Staten Island and the expo collection slot. One does not replace the others. Check each before planning the rest of your New York stay.

What changed about marathon transport in 2026?

NYRR's transport instructions say runners choose their mode and the organizer assigns departure times using registered or best pace. The selection deadline was September 8 at 23:59 ET; that window is now closed.

The Rules of Competition, updated August 12, require the selected mode and assigned time. NYRR may impose a warning or penalties for non-compliance, including disqualification, cancellation of previously purchased entries or suspension.

That is a published policy, not a prediction that every runner will be checked at every point. Equally, a comment saying nobody checked last year is not permission to ignore it. Build your morning around the assignment you have, not the transport you wish you had booked.

What if you missed selection or your choice disappeared?

The transport page explicitly says runners who missed the deadline can receive an assignment at the expo, with very limited options and no ability to switch. It does not promise the Midtown bus or a departure of your choice.

If you selected transport but the dashboard now says otherwise, save the confirmation you have and contact NYRR support. Ask them to confirm the mode and time against your registration. If unresolved, raise it at the expo before leaving with your kit.

A useful support message identifies the race, the registration issue, the selection you remember making and any confirmation reference. Do not send payment-card details or post your full registration documents in a public running group.

After staff resolve the issue, save the updated instructions locally. A screenshot of a blank selection is evidence of a problem to fix, not an assignment you can use to board another service.

Ferry, Midtown bus or New Jersey bus?

These are the three general options on NYRR's current transport page. The estimates describe the onward trip, not a guaranteed door-to-start time.

Assigned modeDeparture pointNYRR estimate and arrival instruction
Staten Island FerryWhitehall Terminal, Manhattan; onward bus from St. GeorgeAbout 90 minutes total
Midtown busEnter at Sixth Avenue and West 39th Street, by the New York Public Library areaAbout 90 minutes; arrive 30 minutes before departure
New Jersey busMetLife Stadium, Parking Lot K near the Quest Diagnostics Training CenterAbout 60 minutes; arrive 15 minutes before departure

For an international visitor, the hotel-to-departure leg deserves its own calculation. A hotel near Times Square may suit a Midtown assignment, but it does not move Whitehall Terminal into Midtown. A New Jersey family stay needs a plan to reach the actual bus lot, not just a general address for the stadium.

Tour-operator, charity and athletes-with-disabilities arrangements can differ. Check directly with your team or trip manager instead of assuming a general transport table covers your registration tier.

The free ferry is only part of the journey

The Staten Island Ferry crosses between Manhattan and St. George. For runners, the onward trip to Fort Wadsworth is a separate part of the race-day arrangement. Reaching the ferry terminal on Staten Island does not mean you have reached the start village.

Use NYC DOT's ferry information for the public service and NYRR's instructions for the marathon connection. Do not confuse the Staten Island Ferry with separately branded NYC Ferry routes or private tour-operator boats.

Plan your subway arrival to match the assigned ferry departure, leaving room to find the correct entrance and follow staff directions. If you miss a connection, ask event staff what to do. Do not assume taking a different public sailing guarantees access to an unassigned marathon shuttle.

Bib pickup closes before the expo does

The 2026 expo page places collection at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, 11th Avenue between West 35th and West 36th Streets.

DateExpo hoursBib pickup closes
Thursday, October 2910:00 to 20:0019:30
Friday, October 3010:00 to 20:0019:30
Saturday, October 3109:00 to 17:0016:30

You must collect in person with photo ID and your runner confirmation form. Proxy collection is not allowed. The dashboard's expo-slot selection and change deadline is October 31 at 16:00 ET.

The nearest subway stop listed is 34th Street-Hudson Yards on the 7 line. Check actual service before setting out.

For a Saturday arrival, work backward from 16:30 bib closure, not 17:00 exhibition closure. Airport arrival procedures, luggage and the journey to Javits still have to fit. A friend already in New York cannot solve a late-flight problem by collecting your bib for you.

Bag pre-check is not a race-morning luggage service

Bag pre-check required a selection by September 8. Registered users of that option receive the official bag at the expo and hand it over on October 30 or 31, from 09:00 to 17:00, on Central Park West. There is no general start-to-finish bag transport on race morning.

NYRR's bag page currently gives inconsistent cross streets: West 74th-75th in its introduction and West 73rd-74th in a later note. Confirm the final map and handover point at the expo rather than use an older finish map. The location discrepancy does not change the published 17:00 Saturday deadline.

Keep this trip separate from the Javits appointment. On Saturday, a final bib slot followed by a rushed journey to bag pre-check leaves little margin. An earlier collection slot makes those two tasks easier to combine.

The start-area instructions allow the official clear start-village bag into Fort Wadsworth. That is not a promise that its contents will be returned to you in Central Park. Pack only permitted items you can carry, use or dispose of as instructed.

Your corral time is different from your transport time

NYRR's start page currently lists five mass-wave starts: 09:10, 09:45, 10:20, 10:55 and 11:30, subject to change. Corrals close before those starts. Read the wave, color and corral on your own bib rather than infer your assignment from another runner's pace chart.

The page permits moving to a later, slower wave or corral to start with someone, but not an earlier one. That permission does not rewrite your transport assignment. If the two arrangements conflict, ask NYRR for guidance.

Only registered entrants and guides may enter the start area. Supporters need their own day plan; the village is not a place for the whole travel group to wait together.

New York's clocks go back that morning. NIST's 2026 daylight-saving dates put the change at 02:00 on November 1. Keep your phone on the correct local time zone and check any manually set watch or alarm. Avoid converting a departure using your home country's summer-time offset.

A realistic spectator and reunion plan

NYRR's spectator guidance excludes viewing at the start and on the course's bridges. It recommends subway travel between viewing areas. Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn is one listed option; First Avenue and Fifth Avenue provide later Manhattan opportunities.

Pick a main viewing point and a fallback, then tell the runner which side you will use. Trying to reach several boroughs between sightings can turn spectating into a sequence of missed connections. Stay behind barriers and avoid a plan that requires crossing the race stream.

Agree a meeting point beyond controlled finish areas and save its pin on everyone's phone. Reaching the finish line and reaching a companion are different moments. Leave the post-race meal flexible rather than book a table against a predicted finish to the minute.

For step-free travel, check the exact station and current elevator status. Event access arrangements and a normal-day map can differ. Contact NYRR in advance when a support person or adapted transport is essential.

Apps, saved documents and mobile data

The NYRR app supplies runner tracking and race communications. The MTA app covers subway and bus arrivals, service updates, maps and support; TrainTime is the separate tool for Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North journeys.

Set them up before departure. Save your transport assignment, bib confirmation, accommodation details and reunion pin locally. Online tracking helps supporters time a move, but neither a moving dot nor an estimated finish should be your only meeting plan.

For visitors needing US data, OpenSim United States plans provide a defined allowance for transport updates and messaging between venues. On October 16, the catalog listed the United States 5GB 30Days plan at USD6.80, with top-up available for that specific plan. A known allowance and price can suit a short New York stay without depending entirely on public Wi-Fi.

Check your existing roaming allowance first. Another purchase may be unnecessary, and no plan guarantees reception in a packed start village. Use the data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation-timing guide for preparation. The separate United States family guide helps with a longer trip.

Sources and updates

Checked October 16, 2026 against the linked NYRR, NYC DOT, MTA and NIST information. This page will be reviewed for final transport instructions, resolved bag locations, changed expo deadlines, start times and race-week transit notices. Your current NYRR assignment and event staff instructions take priority.
