EVA Air baggage fees rise on September 29, 2026

EVA Air will change its international baggage fees for travel on or after September 29, 2026. The change covers extra bags, overweight and oversized luggage, pets and sports equipment. If you already have a ticket, check its baggage allowance and weigh each bag before deciding whether to buy an extra piece.

An eligible prepaid standard bag still gets a 10% discount when purchased at least four hours before scheduled departure. That discount does not cover overweight bags, oversized bags, pets or sports equipment. The difference matters: adding a separate bag can cost less than taking one heavy suitcase to the airport.

Which dates determine the charge

EVA's September 3 announcement bases the new fee schedule on the travel date. Buying your flight before September 29 does not, by itself, preserve the old baggage prices for later travel. Check outward and return journeys separately when they fall on opposite sides of that date.

There is a separate transition for pet and sports-equipment calculations. Tickets issued or reissued by September 28 retain the previous counting and acceptance rules for travel through March 31, 2027. The new fee amounts still apply when that travel takes place from September 29. Tickets issued or reissued from September 29 use the updated rules; the old-ticket transition also ends after March 31.

For a pet, bicycle or other bulky item, give EVA both your ticket issue or reissue date and travel date when requesting a quote. Its pet policy also has aircraft, route and advance-notice restrictions. A fee table alone does not confirm that an animal or item will be accepted.

Extra-bag prices from September 29

These examples are for one extra standard checked bag, beyond the allowance already on your ticket, where EVA's baggage tariff applies. They do not include overweight or oversized charges. Prices for other route combinations differ.

The US west-coast examples are in EVA's zone 3; Europe is in zone 4. Do not treat all North American airports as the same price zone. Canada has a separate Canadian-dollar chart. For prepaid baggage, EVA says the original ticket's initial departure determines whether the Canadian-dollar chart applies. Confirm the currency shown for your actual itinerary before paying.

For economy and premium economy, a standard piece is up to 23kg. Business-class checked bags have a 32kg limit. The ordinary size limit is 158cm in total length, width and height, including wheels and handles.

EVA's baggage calculator warns that fee results use a departure on the day you make the inquiry. Before September 29, use the dated announcement's future fee tables when budgeting for later travel. An old calculator result or forum price is not a quote for your September 29 flight.

Ten questions to settle before packing

1. Does “2 pieces, 23kg each” include my carry-on?

That checked-baggage entry means two checked pieces, each within 23kg. It is separate from the cabin allowance. It also does not create one pooled 46kg limit: a 25kg bag and a 20kg bag can still leave you with an overweight bag. Moving 2kg between those two bags would bring both within 23kg, provided their sizes and contents comply.

Read your own ticket. EVA's checked-baggage rules vary by fare family and route; some economy fares include one piece rather than two.

2. Does Star Alliance Gold give me another bag?

EVA lists one additional checked piece for eligible Star Alliance Gold members from partner airlines. It applies to international flights operated by EVA and booked under an EVA or Star Alliance partner flight number. The extra piece follows the cabin's weight limit.

Add the relevant membership number and check the benefit against your itinerary before buying baggage. Do not assume that status gives the same allowance on a connecting flight operated by another carrier.

3. What will a third checked bag cost?

First establish whether the third bag is extra. A qualifying status benefit may already cover it. If it is outside your allowance, the route's extra-piece rate applies, with separate charges possible for size or weight.

For example, one additional standard economy bag from Taiwan to Los Angeles costs US$240 under the new table, or US$216 through eligible prepayment. Those figures are for that journey, not for every trip connecting through Taipei to another destination.

4. Is an extra bag cheaper than an overweight bag?

It can be. From September 29, an economy bag weighing more than 23kg and up to 32kg attracts one full extra-piece charge as its overweight fee. Prepayment does not discount that fee.

On the Taiwan to Hong Kong example, one such overweight bag costs US$160 in overweight charges. An eligible prepaid extra standard bag costs US$144. If you can redistribute your belongings into compliant bags, compare those totals and the cost of obtaining another suitcase. If your existing allowance has room, repacking may avoid either charge.

5. What if my suitcase measures more than 158cm?

For ordinary baggage, more than 158cm and up to 203cm attracts one extra-piece charge for oversize. A suitcase measuring 171.6cm falls within that band, even if it is under the weight limit. A bag that is extra, overweight and oversized can attract more than one charge.

Measure the outside, including handles and wheels. Sports equipment has separate rules, so use the relevant item policy and the ticket-date transition above rather than applying the ordinary suitcase limit to every item.

6. Can I prepay to increase a bag from 23kg to 32kg?

No. EVA's prepaid service buys additional standard pieces; it does not buy a higher weight limit for an economy bag. Overweight charges are handled at the airport.

The service requires an eligible EVA-issued electronic ticket beginning with 695 and EVA-operated flights. Its prepaid baggage FAQ also excludes infant tickets, codeshares, separate tickets in one itinerary and certain US or Canada round trips with a Taipei stopover before a third destination. Availability per flight is limited. Complete an eligible purchase at least four hours before scheduled departure and retain the confirmation.

7. Why does a partner app show fewer bags than my EVA ticket?

An app display alone cannot settle which allowance or fee applies. Check the issued ticket and ask the ticketing airline to resolve the discrepancy for every operating carrier. Keep the written allowance available at check-in.

EVA says another carrier's baggage policy may apply on itineraries involving several airlines. Separate tickets have their own allowances. Do not buy an extra bag solely to make a conflicting app display disappear, or assume an EVA fee quote covers a separate domestic ticket.

8. Will my bags transfer automatically at a connection?

On a single ticket involving EVA, UNI Air or an interline partner, EVA says bags can be checked through when the connection is within 12 hours. Government or airport operating restrictions can still require collection and rechecking. With separate tickets, EVA says it tags bags only to the destination on the EVA ticket.

9. Can I move the extra weight into my personal item?

Do not assume that a personal item is an unlimited-weight substitute for checked luggage. EVA's cabin baggage page allows economy and premium economy passengers one carry-on up to 7kg, plus a qualifying personal item. It lists personal-item dimensions of 40 × 30 × 10cm, or 80cm in total, but does not give a separate weight allowance there.

Ask EVA if your intended item is unusually heavy. Cabin bags remain subject to acceptance checks, and an oversized personal item can count against the main carry-on allowance.

10. Can I change my flight after prepaying for baggage?

Contact EVA reservations to arrange the baggage change. Its FAQ says itinerary or date changes after prepayment may need reservations assistance; leaving the allowance unchanged until the airport can lose the prepaid discount.

The allowance is tied to the passenger and booked flight, and cannot be transferred to someone else. EVA's current terms allow a refund of unused prepaid allowance through the original purchase channel within two years of purchase. If online refund processing is unavailable, contact reservations. Keep the baggage receipt as well as the flight confirmation.

Ground data for a Taipei stopover or onward trip

If you are already abroad before the return flight, mobile data can help you open EVA's baggage pages, check a confirmation and arrange eligible prepayment before the four-hour cutoff. Download the allowance and receipt while connected; you should not have to rely on finding airport Wi-Fi at check-in.

Choose the allowance and validity for the days you need, and check installation timing before travel. These are ground mobile-data options. They do not supply EVA's inflight Wi-Fi, change its baggage rules or guarantee that a payment will be approved. If your existing plan already covers the journey, you may not need another eSIM.
