Expovina 2026: wine boats, tickets and Zurich travel

Expovina runs at Bürkliplatz in Zurich from October 29 to November 12, 2026. The wine exhibition, restaurant boats and guided masterclasses have different hours and booking arrangements. Choose the experience first: a late dinner reservation does not give you extra time at the exhibition stands, and ordinary admission does not reserve a masterclass.
The boats are moored venues, not a sightseeing cruise. You move between exhibitors and ships beside the city centre, talking to wine merchants and producers as you taste. Zurich Tourism's event page confirms the dates and lakeside location. It is a manageable addition to a Zurich break if you plan one focused visit rather than trying to sample everything.
Exhibition hours are shorter than restaurant hours
The organizer's opening-hours table separates the wine exhibition from dining. All times below are local Zurich time.
| Part of your visit | Published hours |
|---|---|
| Wine exhibition, Monday-Saturday | 14:00-21:00 |
| Wine exhibition, Sunday | 12:00-19:00 |
| Final exhibition day, November 12 | Closes at 20:00 |
| Restaurant boats, Monday-Saturday | 12:00-midnight |
| Restaurant boats, Sunday | 12:00-22:00 |
For an after-work visit, put the tasting first and dinner afterwards. If your main reason for going is a particular exhibitor, do not arrive near closing and expect the restaurant timetable to apply to that stand.
An afternoon visit leaves more room to ask questions and take a food break before your journey home. That is a pacing choice, not a promise of smaller crowds. Check your selected day's programme before choosing a fixed dinner or train time.
Choose the right admission before paying
Use the official Expovina ticket shop, select your date and read the category's current price and conditions. Keep fair admission, a restaurant reservation and a masterclass booking separate in your planning. Check what each confirmation includes rather than assuming one purchase covers all three.
The organizer describes early-bird admission as entry before 15:00, with no requirement to leave at 15:00. This is an arrival condition, not simply a discount for buying weeks ahead. Check whether that category is offered for your chosen date and leave enough travel margin to meet its cutoff.
A masterclass has limited places and needs its own booking. The ticket shop describes options involving complimentary or regular fair admission; read your selected session's inclusion carefully before buying another entry ticket. A voucher is not a reserved seminar place until you have completed the relevant booking.
For a group, nominate one person to check everyone's date and booking category before paying. Agree how each person will access their admission confirmation if you arrive separately. It is easier to fix a mismatched date at home than with the group waiting at the entrance.
What to taste at the 2026 wine boats
Portugal is the 2026 guest country, with Portuguese wines represented across the event and a Vinhos & Petiscos offering at the Krabbenbar. That gives a first visit a useful theme: compare a few wines from one country instead of moving between stands without a plan.
Another approach is to choose a grape or style you already enjoy and ask exhibitors for a comparison. Tell them what you like and your approximate bottle budget. You do not need to pretend you know a region to ask why two wines taste different.
Use the My.Expovina web guide to shortlist exhibitors, search wines and find the current programme. Save the names of a few stands before arriving. Ship positions and hospitality locations should come from the current guide, not a previous edition's photograph or a generic article about the fleet.
If you find something you want to buy, ask the exhibitor about minimum quantities, collection, delivery and the full cost before ordering. Travelling with hand luggage makes a bottle purchase a different decision from ordering wine for delivery to a Swiss address. Check your airline and destination's rules before committing.
Take brief notes or photograph a label with permission. A note about the producer, grape, price and what you liked is more useful the following morning than a long camera roll of unidentified glasses.
English masterclasses worth planning around
The dated 2026 masterclass programme lists language, time and location for each session. These examples are advertised in English:
| Date | Time | Subject |
|---|---|---|
| October 30 | 17:00-18:00 | Cabernet Franc from Villány, Hungary |
| November 1 | 13:30-14:30 | Zarova Estate and Slovenia's new winemaking generation |
| November 1 | 15:15-16:15 | Muskat grape varieties and styles |
These sessions are listed in Captain's Lounge on FS Schwan's upper deck. Check the booking confirmation for any relocation. The programme is aimed at interested beginners as well as experienced drinkers, but the language and subject still matter more than selecting whichever time is convenient.
Choose one class that genuinely interests you, then leave time on either side to find the boat and settle in. A tightly packed sequence of seminars, tasting stands and dinner leaves little room for questions or delays. A programme listing is not confirmation that seats remain available.
Food, bags and whether to bring children
For dining, open the current gastronomy guide and follow the restaurant's own reservation instructions. Check the named ship and booking conditions. Do not substitute a regular Lake Zurich dinner-cruise reservation for an Expovina restaurant booking.
The event's food options include pier food and onboard dining, so decide whether you want a quick meal or a seated evening. If anyone has an allergy or a specific dietary requirement, contact the chosen operator rather than assuming every stand has an equivalent alternative. Ask about drinking-water arrangements as well; do not assume a restaurant's policy applies across the fair.
The ticket shop prohibits bags and backpacks larger than A4, pushchairs and dogs other than assistance dogs. Arrive with a small bag rather than luggage for the rest of your Swiss trip. Confirm storage arrangements before bringing anything that cannot go aboard.
This is a wine-focused visit with restricted space, not an all-purpose family attraction. Check the admission rules directly if bringing a child. If the main purpose of your holiday is family sightseeing, our Switzerland with kids guide is a better starting point for choosing the day's activities.
Step-free entry does not mean every deck is accessible
The current access page says the Seepavillon on General-Guisan-Quai has level entry. It lists step-free main-deck access for Schwan, MS Wädenswil, eMS Uetliberg and MS Helvetia. The steamships Stadt Zürich and Stadt Rapperswil require steps.
Those are specific access points, not a guarantee that every cabin, upper deck or seminar room is accessible. If attending a masterclass, ask about its actual room and route before paying. Being able to enter Schwan's main deck does not establish access to its upper-deck Captain's Lounge.
The service guide identifies public toilets at Bürkliplatz and facilities aboard larger ships. Ask which facilities meet your needs and how to reach them from your planned tasting route. Water levels and temporary boarding arrangements can affect the practical route, so contact the organizer and follow staff advice on the day.
Getting to Bürkliplatz and returning after dinner
Search Bürkliplatz, Zürich in the ZVV app for your actual arrival time. If coming through Zurich HB or Zurich Airport, enter that starting point rather than copying a tram number from an old itinerary. Check the return connection too, especially if dining after the exhibition closes.
The organizer says scheduled lake services use Bellevue during Expovina. If combining a boat trip with the fair, check the cruise's departure pier separately. The nearest moored exhibition boat is not necessarily where your public lake service boards.
ZVV's ticket instructions require an internet connection to buy through the app and completion before departure. Set up payment before you reach the stop. A payment attempt that is still processing when the vehicle leaves is not the same as a completed purchase.
App tickets are personal, and companions covered by a ticket must remain with the ticket holder. Keep your phone charged and know where the valid ticket appears. A purchase receipt is not automatically a travel ticket; use the format the operator requires.
If considering a Zürich Card, compare its listed zones and duration with your whole city itinerary. Do not assume a local transport product includes Expovina entry or every intercity journey.
Offline preparation and OpenSim data in Zurich
Before leaving Wi-Fi, save your admission confirmation, restaurant details and a map back to your accommodation. Bookmark My.Expovina and ZVV, and agree a meeting point if your group splits between boats. A waterproof outer layer is useful for the lakeside approach; check the forecast rather than judging conditions from an indoor tasting room.
Mobile data helps with the current ship guide, a changed connection and group messages. It cannot reserve a sold-out class, extend an app's service area or guarantee reception inside a busy venue. Keep the important confirmations available without relying on a fresh download at the entrance.
OpenSim's Switzerland catalog listed 1GB for seven days at US$1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at US$3.00 on October 18, with top-up supported on both. A small fixed allowance is a practical choice for a short Zurich visit when you mainly need transport and event information. If Switzerland is already included in your home plan, you may not need another plan.
Compare current Switzerland eSIM plans, estimate your allowance with the travel data calculator, and check phone compatibility and installation timing before departure.
