Facade of Theatre Pitoeff at Maison communale de Plainpalais in Geneva, photographed in 2011

The Geneva International Film Festival, GIFF, runs October 30-November 8, 2026. Its programme combines cinema, series and immersive experiences. Choose the sessions you want before buying a pass, check the screening language, and update your transport app: TPG has announced that the old tpg+ app will be withdrawn on October 28.

A first visit can be one film and dinner, rather than ten days of screenings. If you are curious about virtual reality, compare an individual experience with the immersive-space programme instead of assuming every booking works like a cinema ticket.

The photograph shows the Maison communale de Plainpalais venue in 2011, not the current festival setup or entrance arrangements.

What kind of GIFF visit should you book?

Your planStart withCheck before choosing
One evening in GenevaA single film or series screeningLanguage, runtime and return journey
Several screenings on one daySingle tickets versus the daily passEligible events and realistic gaps
A first immersive experienceA named work and its booking instructionsFormat, duration, age guidance and physical requirements
A visit with young childrenGIFF KidsRecommended age, language and screening length
A longer festival stayFive-entry option or festival passActual bookings, concessions and availability

Browse the 2026 programme for the dates you will be in town. Read the individual listing, not just the title or premiere label. A series screening can show several episodes, and its listed length may be very different from one episode at home.

The festival overview is useful for exploring sections, including immersive work and the tributes to Mira Nair and Fanny Herrero. Choose by subject and format first. A familiar director is a starting point, not a reason to book an inconvenient slot you cannot reach comfortably.

GIFF ticket prices and pass comparison

The 2026 ticketing page lists these prices, checked October 18:

Ticket or passListed price
Cinema, series or immersive-space full-price admissionCHF 16.50
Reduced admissionCHF 13
Youth admissionCHF 10
One immersive experienceCHF 10
Kids, conferences or clipsCHF 10
Daily passCHF 45
Five-entry passCHF 75
Festival passCHF 165
Reduced festival passCHF 120
Under-26 festival passCHF 90

For eligible CHF 16.50 screenings, three singles total CHF 49.50, compared with the CHF 45 daily pass. Five total CHF 82.50, compared with CHF 75 for five entries. Ten singles equal the CHF 165 full festival pass. These are price comparisons, not a guarantee that every event category is included in each product.

Check the selected pass's terms and qualifying concessions before paying. Lower-priced sessions change the calculation. The CHF 110 early-bird offer in the opening announcement ended on October 7; it is not the current general pass price.

Availability also changes the value. Compare a pass with the events you can attend, not a theoretical schedule packed from morning to midnight. Leave time to eat, collect belongings and move between buildings.

Reservations, arrival times and ticket backups

The festival FAQ requires passholders to reserve their sessions. The festival pass is personal and non-transferable. A pass purchase alone does not secure a place in a particular room.

GIFF recommends arriving 30-45 minutes before a screening or event. If you are absent five minutes before it starts, your seat can be reassigned; late admission is not guaranteed. Tickets are not refundable or exchangeable under the stated terms.

Save the emailed QR ticket or digital pass before leaving your accommodation. An individual ticket can also be printed. Keep your phone charged and the correct booking easy to find.

Write down the venue with each reservation. Two screenings that look comfortably separated on a timetable may be in different buildings, and an introduction or discussion can take time beyond the film's own running length. Avoid booking a tight onward train immediately after a session you especially want to enjoy.

Films, premieres and the closing-night date

The opening and closing announcement confirms Tangles, directed by Leah Nelson, for opening night on October 30 at Théâtre Pitoëff. The 103-minute animated film follows a mother-daughter relationship affected by Alzheimer's, adapted from Sarah Leavitt's graphic novel. Animation here does not imply a children's film.

The awards ceremony on November 7 is followed by Arrested Memory, Sabu's 87-minute action comedy. The festival itself continues through November 8. If you are planning a final-weekend visit, check both days rather than treating the awards ceremony as the end of all screenings.

Open the actual event booking for admission and start time. A film runtime is not the total length of a ceremony evening.

Choosing an immersive session

The 2026 highlights selection includes A Long Goodbye, a 25-minute immersive work by Kate Voet and Victor Maes, and Everest: The First Ascent, a 37-minute work by Jean Dellac and Benjamin Auriche. They are examples of different session lengths, not interchangeable products.

Read how the work is presented before buying. Check whether you book one experience, a timed group of works or another format. Ask the festival about headset use, seating, movement, age restrictions and any access needs when the listing does not answer your question. Do not assume an experience is appropriate for a child because it is shorter than a film.

For a first attempt, choose something you want to see and leave time afterwards before the next appointment. You do not need to fill the day with headset sessions to make the visit worthwhile.

The festival's sections and awards guide explains its film, series and immersive strands. It helps distinguish the artistic programme from professional talks and industry activity. Check that your chosen booking is intended for public attendance rather than relying on an industry listing with a similar title.

Family screenings: compare age and runtime

The official GIFF Kids programme lists:

  • Muyi, la légende du village des femmes: ages eight and up, 90 minutes, at Théâtre Pitoëff on October 31 at 11:00 and November 7 at 10:30.
  • À la poursuite de l'Affreunard: ages four and up, 44 minutes, at Cinémas du Grütli on November 1 at 10:30.
  • Le Noël d'Ernest et Célestine: ages four and up, 71 minutes, at Cinémas du Grütli on November 8 at 16:00.

Check the session's spoken language and subtitles before booking. Recommended age is not a promise that every child will enjoy the same length or subject. A shorter film may be a better choice for a first cinema visit, with a meal or a break afterwards instead of another reservation.

For the wider holiday, the Switzerland with kids guide helps compare destinations and travel days beyond Geneva.

Can you attend without speaking French?

Use each film's language and subtitle information. An English-language festival website does not mean every screening or talk is in English. Check the exact session, especially for children's films, dialogue-heavy series and guest discussions.

If your group has different language needs, choose the shared screening first and build the rest of the day around it. Do not buy several tickets on the assumption that a familiar film title implies the same audio version you saw elsewhere.

Geneva venues and accessible arrival

The festival venue guide lists the Maison communale de Plainpalais at 52 Rue de Carouge, with its main access at 7 Rue Henri-Christiné. Théâtre Pitoëff and the immersive space are within this venue complex. Save the entrance address as well as the building name.

Cinérama Empire is at 72 Rue de Carouge. Maison des arts du Grütli is at 16 Rue du Général-Dufour. GIFF lists the Empire ticket desk as cashless on its current ticketing page.

The venue page includes a replacement-service note for the Augustin stop. Check your exact journey close to the day rather than following an old tram instruction. For step-free access, seating or assistance, contact [email protected] with the session and building. This guide does not certify every festival room as accessible.

Update your TPG app before the festival

TPG's September 22 announcement says the old tpg+ app will be withdrawn from October 28. The replacement is the updated tpg app, so check what is installed before traveling to a festival that starts two days later.

The current app guide lists route planning, live departures, disruption information and mobile ticket purchases. Check the route in both directions and select the correct zones. Paying through an app is not the same as tapping a bank card anywhere and automatically having the right ticket.

Save your accommodation address and the final useful departure for your evening. If you are staying across the border in France, include that last part of the journey rather than stopping the plan at Geneva's city centre.

Does your accommodation include local transport?

Geneva Tourism's Transport Card guidance says guests at approved Geneva accommodation can receive a personal digital card for their stay. It covers the Unireso zone 10 network, excluding Céligny, including local buses, trams, trains and shuttle boats.

Ask your accommodation for the link before arrival. Do not assume a hotel in France qualifies or that a zone 10 card covers an onward journey across the border. Check the full itinerary and any additional ticket required. Keep each traveler's valid card available for inspection.

Continuing a series after the screening

The GIFF FAQ explains that eligible series marked ONSITE & ONLINE can continue on Play GIFF after the opening episodes are watched in person. The corresponding ticket, pass or accreditation must be scanned there. The platform runs October 30-November 30, with a 96-hour viewing window per series once started. This is not unrestricted online access to every festival film.

Mobile data between screenings

Data helps with live transport updates, reservation changes and meeting friends between venues. Download tickets and maps anyway; a flat battery or a slow connection should not be the only thing between you and your booking.

OpenSim Switzerland plans are a trip-sized alternative when your home plan does not include suitable Swiss roaming. The public catalog checked October 18 lists 1GB for seven days at US$1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at US$3.00, both with top-up eligibility. Confirm the selected package's current terms and price before purchase.

For light maps and messaging, your needs will differ from someone streaming series over mobile data. Use Wi-Fi where practical for long downloads and estimate your allowance with the travel data calculator. If your existing plan already covers the visit at a suitable cost, another package may be unnecessary.

Check phone compatibility and installation timing before travel. If your accommodation or itinerary crosses into France, choose coverage for both countries rather than assuming a Switzerland-only plan includes the border area.

Sources and updates

Prices, festival details and transport guidance were checked on October 18, 2026, using the current GIFF edition, TPG and Geneva Tourism. Confirm the individual booking's language, availability, venue and access arrangements before paying. This page will be updated for material programme, ticket, reservation or transport changes.
