Glasgow Airport M8 closures: November dates and bus changes

M8 closures affect Glasgow Airport journeys from 18:00 on November 7 to 13:00 on November 8, and again from 18:00 on November 14 to 13:00 on November 15, 2026. The 500 airport bus is diverted rather than withdrawn. The second weekend has wider restrictions, so do not assume a route that works this Sunday will work next Sunday.
All times are local UK time. The airport's November 3 notice warns of significant delays. Plan from the time you need to reach your airline's desk or gate, not from the motorway's normal journey time.
When is the M8 closed near Glasgow?
The bridge-work programme published by Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and the airport warning distinguish the two weekends:
| Window | Main restrictions relevant to the airport journey |
|---|---|
| November 7, 18:00 to November 8, 13:00 | M8 eastbound J24-J22 and westbound J22-J24, including specified slip roads; M77 remains unaffected by this work |
| November 14, 18:00 to November 15, 13:00 | M8 eastbound J24-J22 and westbound J20-J24; M77 northbound from J1 also closes, with additional M74 and slip-road restrictions |
| November 21, 18:00 to November 22, 13:00 | A provisional contingency weekend if the work needs to be rescheduled, not a confirmed third closure |
The programme depends on suitable weather. Check the Traffic Scotland incidents map and list before departure and again before your return. A scheduled 13:00 finish is not proof that traffic will be flowing normally at that moment.
These are road restrictions, not an announcement that the airport or its flights are closed. Check flight status separately with your airline.
Is the Glasgow Airport 500 bus still running?
Yes, with a diversion. First Bus's current M8 service notice gives the closure windows and these city-centre instructions:
| Direction on service 500 | Published diversion |
|---|---|
| Towards Glasgow Airport | Normal city-centre route to Waterloo Street, where only the first stop is served; board before West Campbell Street or on St Vincent Street |
| Towards Buchanan Bus Station | Arrives through Argyle Street and drops off on Hope Street at Central Station, then resumes its normal city-centre route |
The operator asks passengers to allow extra time. Its ordinary advertised airport journey time does not include a dependable allowance for these diversions. Check the next departure and the whole journey rather than adding a guessed number of minutes to a familiar timetable.
A diverted bus also does not automatically serve every bus stop along the temporary streets. Confirm the boarding point and direction in the current service notice or with staff. Do not follow a bus on the map and assume it will pick you up wherever it passes.
Check the city-centre stop before walking there
There is also separate city-centre roadwork. The airport's bus-access page says airport-bound stops on North Hanover Street and St Vincent Place are not served. It directs passengers to Bath Street opposite Sainsbury's and St Vincent Street opposite Lloyds Banking Group.
It also replaces the Waterloo Street stop opposite Morgan Stanley with the stop before West Campbell Street. For the inward journey, the airport notice identifies West George Street as an alternative for Queen Street Station.
Those are different issues from the motorway closure. Before leaving your hotel, check the latest First Bus instructions for the particular journey. If a general route map, an older screenshot and a temporary stop notice disagree, ask the operator rather than assuming the nearest marked stop is active.
The historical photograph above is not a current boarding map. Use today's stop signs at the airport and in the city.
The 903 has a separate Renfrew Bridge diversion
The airport's notice quotes Citylink saying the M8 work itself does not divert its 903 service. However, the Renfrew Bridge closure does: the service cannot call at Victoria Park, Scotstoun and Yoker during that diversion.
That distinction matters if someone suggests the 903 as an unaffected alternative. Check whether it serves your actual boarding stop, not simply whether it reaches the airport. The same airport notice says Citylink routes serving Campbeltown, Oban and Skye divert during the M8 work, with their stops retained but longer journeys expected.
Confirm the current route and booking with Citylink before changing plans. A ticket for one operator is not automatically valid on another, and an airport arrival on the timetable is not a guaranteed connection to a flight.
How much does the 500 cost, and can you pay onboard?
On November 8, First Bus's Airport Express page lists a GBP2 single. It allows purchase through the First Bus app, online or from the driver using cash or contactless. Check the current fare before buying an older return product quoted elsewhere.
The page describes a 24-hour service, with airport departures from Stance 1 and Buchanan Bus Station departures from Stance 46. That does not mean departures are equally frequent throughout the night or protected from road delays.
Keep an app ticket and your payment method accessible before boarding. If an existing return ticket is missing or appears used, contact the operator with the order confirmation; do not assume an expired single shown in the app proves you have a valid second journey.
Early flights, luggage and assistance
Work backward from your airline's check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines. Add time for the bus wait or car pickup, the amended road journey and the walk inside the airport. A 06:00 flight does not give you until 06:00 to reach the terminal door.
If that leaves an uncomfortable margin, compare an earlier departure or an airport-area overnight stay before travel day. Check availability and cancellation terms. Switching from a bus to a taxi may change the pickup arrangement, but it does not remove congestion on the surrounding roads.
Tell the operator about a wheelchair, mobility scooter, bulky bag or other requirement before relying on a particular service. The normal bus's facilities do not establish access at a temporary stop. Confirm where you can board, how luggage will be handled and whether your group can travel together.
For an airport pickup, agree on the permitted meeting point and recheck the return route too. Avoid arranging a tight onward rail connection based only on the ordinary airport-to-city estimate. Ask the relevant operator about options if a delay makes the booked connection impractical; keep receipts without assuming reimbursement.
Transport updates and mobile data
Use First Bus for the 500's service notices, live bus information and tickets. Traffic Scotland is useful for the road leg. Save the stop name, accommodation address, booking and an alternative meeting point offline before leaving Wi-Fi. A live tracker is useful context, not a reserved place or an arrival guarantee.
International visitors who need a separate allowance can compare OpenSim United Kingdom plans. The November 8 catalog includes 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3, both with top-up support. A smaller allowance can suit checking diversions and messaging during a short visit without purchasing a large monthly plan. Confirm the selected package's current terms.
If your existing plan includes enough UK data, another purchase may be unnecessary. An eSIM provides data; it does not keep a road open or make an unrelated bus ticket valid.
For the rest of the visit, see the Glasgow Winter Wonderland guide and United Kingdom with kids. Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing before travelling.
Sources and updates
Glasgow Airport supplies the two-weekend road warning, contingency date and Citylink statement. First Bus supplies the 500 diversion, current fare and payment methods. The airport's bus page lists separate city-centre stop changes; Traffic Scotland provides current road incidents.
Update this guide if the works are postponed, road access resumes differently from the programme, or an operator changes its diversion or stops. Check whether the provisional November 21-22 window is activated before treating it as a closure.
