Glasgow Winter Wonderland 2026: dates, tickets and Subway closures

Glasgow's Winter Wonderland opens at St Enoch Square on Friday, November 6, 2026, and at Glasgow Green on November 20. Entry is free, but rides, skating and bookable experiences cost extra. Before choosing a Sunday, check your transport: the Subway will not operate on November 15 or 22.
The two sites suit different outings. St Enoch works as a stop during a city-centre shopping day. Glasgow Green is the choice for the ice rink, Santa's Grotto or the Very Merry Circus. You do not need to visit both to have a worthwhile afternoon, especially with young children.
Glasgow Winter Wonderland dates and opening hours
The St Enoch organizer page and Glasgow Green page describe separate sites, not one event with interchangeable tickets. All times here are local Glasgow time.
| Site | Season | Normal hours before December 21 |
|---|---|---|
| St Enoch Square | November 6-December 27, 2026 | Sunday-Wednesday 12:00-21:00; Thursday-Friday 12:00-22:00; Saturday 10:00-22:00 |
| Glasgow Green | November 20, 2026-January 3, 2027 | Monday-Friday 15:00-22:00; Saturday-Sunday 12:00-22:00 |
These are site hours from the organizer FAQ, not a guarantee that every attraction has a session throughout them. In particular, a weekday lunchtime visit to Glasgow Green before December 21 is too early.
Christmas and New Year hours differ
Both sites close on December 25 and at 20:00 on December 24. St Enoch opens 10:00-22:00 on December 21-23, 10:00-20:00 on December 24, and 12:00-20:00 on December 26-27.
Glasgow Green normally opens 12:00-22:00 from December 21, except the holiday changes above and 14:00-22:00 on January 1. Do not assume a market visit is available on Christmas Day, or that nearby restaurants and transport follow the event timetable.
November 15 and 22: do not plan a Subway return
SPT's November 5 closure announcement confirms that the Subway will not run on either Sunday while modernization testing takes place. November 22 is the first Sunday after Glasgow Green opens, so this is relevant even if a route planner usually sends you through St Enoch station.
A Subway park-and-ride plan will not provide a train into town on those dates. Choose a different route before leaving home, and check the return as carefully as the outward journey. SPT also warns of planned M8 closures until 13:00 on both Sundays, with possible additional road traffic. That is a reason to allow time, not evidence that every road or airport transfer is closed.
On other Sundays, the normal Subway timetable is 10:00-18:12, much earlier than the markets close. Those are system operating hours, not a promise of an 18:12 departure at every station. Check your particular last train rather than finishing dinner and expecting the late-evening service available Monday-Saturday.
ScotRail services and the Subway are different systems. Use the ScotRail planner and engineering notices for your actual date; a Subway closure does not establish that your mainline train is cancelled or running normally.
St Enoch or Glasgow Green: which should you choose?
Choose St Enoch for a shorter city-centre visit. Its organizer lists an observation wheel, food and gift stalls, festive rides and bar entertainment. Browse first, then decide which paid activity is worth it for your group. You can enjoy looking around without committing to a full afternoon of purchases.
Choose Glasgow Green for a booked activity. The organizer lists the open-air ice rink, Santa visits, circus, observation wheel and rides. Build the outing around one confirmed booking rather than promising children several experiences before checking their times, conditions and total cost.
The signed St Enoch entrance is on Argyle Street. For Glasgow Green, head for McLennan Arch, beside the observation wheel. Save the entrance rather than only the name of the park. The two sites are separate walks; an attraction booking is not a reason to rush across town with a tired child.
This guide covers these two Winter Wonderland sites. Other Glasgow Christmas events have their own venues, dates and booking arrangements. Do not use a photograph or programme from a previous Christmas to decide where this year's event entrance is.
Book skating, Santa and the circus separately
For skating, choose a session through the organizer's booking route and read the current age and accompanying-adult rules before paying. Allow time beforehand to collect skates and get ready, and leave a gap before dinner or the next booking. An outdoor rink is not a weather-proof activity simply because you have a ticket.
The Santa's Grotto booking page describes a child ticket including a gift and photograph, with up to two accompanying adults aged 16 or over. Select the actual date and slot before making travel plans; a site's season does not establish grotto availability every day. Keep the confirmation somewhere you can retrieve without searching through your inbox at the entrance.
The Very Merry Circus ticket page describes a one-hour performance in a heated Big Top. Under-twos may sit on a knee without an allocated seat. Check the performance calendar, full checkout total and terms rather than assuming the circus starts whenever the park opens.
Do not buy multiple timed experiences back-to-back. Arrival, a queue, toilets and a snack can easily consume the space between bookings. Check change and cancellation terms for each experience before paying; do not assume deciding against a visit because of rain produces a refund.
Visiting with children, a pushchair or access needs
For a first visit with toddlers, one ride or a short browse may be enough. Choose a meal stop and a way home before setting out, and keep a change of clothes available if you plan to skate. Older children can help choose one paid activity within an agreed budget instead of negotiating at every attraction.
The organizer lists toilets and accessible toilets at both sites. Specific boarding needs still deserve a direct question: confirm the route, queue arrangements and assistance for the attraction you want, not just whether the wider site is described as accessible. For quieter or adapted sessions, confirm the date and conditions with the organizer before booking.
SPT asks for pushchairs to be folded and says large prams cannot be accommodated on the Subway. If folding yours requires unloading bags or carrying a sleeping child, plan for that constraint. Check station access separately rather than assuming every platform has the same facilities.
The United Kingdom with kids guide can help with the wider trip. For another Scottish Christmas outing, compare the Edinburgh Christmas guide, but give each city its own travel time rather than stacking booked activities on a transfer day.
Airport arrival, useful apps and wet-weather plans
For Glasgow Airport, the First Glasgow Airport Express 500 operates around the clock between airport Stance 1 and Buchanan Bus Station. Use its current timetable for your flight arrival; a headline journey time is not a reliable allowance for baggage collection, road traffic and the final walk.
Keep the First Bus app or operator planner for bus travel, ScotRail for rail journeys and SPT's notices for the Subway. Save both event entrances in your map app and keep booking confirmations available offline. A live route check is useful before leaving the hotel and again before heading home.
Wear shoes you can walk in when paths are wet, and take layers and a waterproof outer layer. Choose an indoor break nearby before everyone is cold. If the weather deteriorates, check organizer messages before travelling. A heated circus booking does not make the whole park visit indoors.
Mobile data for tickets and route changes
An international visitor may need data to retrieve an email, check a disrupted route or message family after splitting up. Offline maps and saved confirmations reduce that dependence, but they cannot show a fresh service cancellation.
On November 6, OpenSim's public United Kingdom plans included 1GB for 7 days at USD 1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD 3.00, both listed as eligible for top-up. That gives a short-break visitor a defined allowance and validity to compare with a home carrier's roaming charge. It is not a claim that OpenSim beats every UK or roaming plan; an included UK allowance may already cover the trip.
Use the travel data calculator if you expect more than maps and messages. Check phone compatibility and installation timing before buying. Mobile data does not replace a ticket, improve an attraction's availability or guarantee reception in a crowd.
Sources and updates
The organizer pages and ticket calendars above carry the event arrangements; SPT, ScotRail and First Bus carry transport information. Dates and services can change. Recheck your chosen activity and return route before travelling, particularly on November 15 or 22 and during Christmas week.
