Hong Kong remains open, but the city expects about 1.29 million Mainland visitors across its sea, land and air control points. Hong Kong does not observe a seven-day shutdown. October 1 is a Hong Kong public holiday, while October 2 to 7 are not all local holidays. How busy will Hong Kong be during Golden Week 2026?
The Hong Kong Government's September 23 announcement says the Immigration Department expects around 1.29 million Mainland visitors through sea, land and air control points from October 1 to 7. Average daily visitor arrivals are forecast to be more than five percent above the previous National Day Golden Week.
That number does not mean every street will be equally crowded. The government specifically identifies boundary control points, Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront, the Peak, High Island Reservoir East Dam and Sai Kung campsites for extra monitoring or crowd management. Major attractions and ferry approaches can also feel busy because many visitors make similar day plans.
Do not plan around an unsupported claim that one date or hour will be quiet. A border queue can move faster after extra capacity is added, while the Peak or a waterfront area can still be crowded. Use live information for the place you are about to visit.
Should you cancel a Hong Kong trip during Golden Week?
Usually, no. Hong Kong's transport network, restaurants, museums, waterfronts and neighborhood streets still give visitors many ways to change course. The trip becomes difficult when every day depends on a fixed sequence of famous sights, restaurant reservations and cross-boundary connections.
Keep the trip when flights and accommodation are confirmed, especially if you can change the order of your days. Consider changing dates when the sole purpose is a quiet visit to the most popular attractions, or when a same-day border crossing protects an expensive flight, cruise or separately ticketed train.

Use Hong Kong's live border tools before leaving
The most useful holiday tool is the Security Bureau's Easy Boundary dashboard. It brings together current information for land control points and named cross-boundary services, including the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge shuttle bus, the Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang shuttle and MTR connections.
Use HKeMobility for local traffic and public transport information. The government says HKeMobility also provides traffic snapshots for the Hong Kong port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.
Check both shortly before departure. A screenshot saved the night before is a fallback, not live evidence of the next morning's queue.
East Rail to Lo Wu or Lok Ma Chau
East Rail provides a direct city connection to the Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau Spur Line control points. MTR service will be strengthened at different times from September 30 to October 7. The announcement does not promise a short immigration queue or say that every train will run more often all day.
Lo Wu connects with Luohu in Shenzhen. Lok Ma Chau connects with Futian Port. Choose the crossing that fits the Shenzhen destination rather than selecting one only because someone reported a short wait on a different day.
High-speed rail from Hong Kong West Kowloon
High-speed rail can suit a confirmed journey to Futian, Shenzhen North or a farther mainland destination. It requires a train booking and its own departure procedures, so it is not an interchangeable walk-up substitute for East Rail.
Use the exact ticket and operator instructions for arrival time and documents. Do not schedule a timed attraction immediately after the border process.
Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge
The government plans to increase the Gold Bus frequency to about one minute at the busiest periods, subject to demand and operations. More frequent buses do not eliminate immigration, ticketing or road queues at either end.
For Macau, compare the bridge route with the ferry that serves your actual departure area and final destination. Reserve the chosen journey where required, then check the live status again before leaving the hotel.
Lok Ma Chau-Huanggang shuttle
The Yellow Bus is planned to run as often as about every two minutes at peak periods. Special traffic management may still be introduced around Lok Ma Chau and Huanggang. The bus frequency is only one part of the total crossing time.
Is a Shenzhen or Macau day trip worth it that week?
A day trip can work, but it should be the only fixed travel objective that day. Do not pair it with a nonrefundable evening flight or a last ferry home.
For Shenzhen, confirm that every traveler has the correct mainland entry permission before choosing a crossing. A visa-free nationality, an existing visa and a port visa are different situations. This guide does not determine personal eligibility.
For Macau, reserve the cross-boundary transport that matches your route and keep enough time to return through two sets of formalities. If the day is mainly about Hong Kong, another city is not an escape from Golden Week crowds. Macau also receives holiday visitors.
Skip the day trip when:
- a flight or cruise leaves Hong Kong that evening;
- a child, older traveler or mobility-limited companion cannot tolerate an uncertain queue;
- the group lacks the required mainland or Macau documents;
- the plan relies on the last practical return service;
- poor weather removes most of the reason for going.
A Hong Kong itinerary that can absorb crowds
The easiest plan uses one reserved anchor and one nearby fallback. It avoids crossing the harbor repeatedly and does not send the group from Lantau to the Peak to Tsim Sha Tsui in one day.
Hong Kong Island day
Choose one fixed stop such as the Peak, a museum or a booked meal. Pair it with streets and waterfront areas in the same half of the island. If the Peak queue is longer than the group accepts, keep a lower-level neighborhood route rather than spending the day moving between alternatives.
Kowloon day
Combine one museum or market with the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront. The waterfront is a named crowd-management area, so visit with an exit plan. Know which MTR station you will use if the nearest entrance is heavily loaded.
Lantau day
Airport arrivals, Ngong Ping, Disneyland and Tung Chung can put different travelers on the same transport corridors. Choose one principal destination. Do not treat Lantau as a quick add-on before an evening flight unless the luggage and airport transfer are already solved.
Sai Kung and East Dam day
Golden Week includes additional controls at High Island Reservoir East Dam and nearby campsites. The Po Pin Chau section has a separate real-name reservation trial. Read the Po Pin Chau reservation and transport guide before traveling; an East Dam visit does not automatically include access to the reserved trail section.

Restaurants, attractions and tickets
Ordinary restaurants do not all switch to one holiday timetable. Queues depend on the district, meal time and whether the venue accepts reservations. Keep one meal reservation if it matters, but save two nearby alternatives that do not require crossing the city.
Buy timed attraction tickets only through the attraction or its named seller. A screenshot of a confirmation page is useful when the app reloads slowly, but carry the original booking reference and required identity document too.
If a ticket is sold out, do not buy an unofficial transfer without checking whether the ticket is named, dated or nontransferable. Golden Week demand creates a useful market for misleading resale listings.
Weather and outdoor fallbacks
The September 23 government update noted uncertainty around a tropical cyclone near the Luzon Strait and showers later in the following week. That is not a forecast for every Golden Week day. Check the Hong Kong Observatory before each outdoor plan.
For the Peak, coastal walks, ferries and Sai Kung, weather can matter more than the calendar. Save an indoor alternative in the same district. Do not travel to an exposed trail merely because a reservation is difficult to replace.
