Journey Japan launches True Unlimited eSIM plans with no phone-data throttle

Journey Japan eSIM has launched 7, 15 and 30-day plans that it describes as truly unlimited. The company says ordinary mobile data has no daily allowance, no fair-use throttle and no speed reduction triggered by a usage threshold.

That is a meaningful difference from plans that provide a daily amount of high-speed data and continue at a reduced speed. It is not the whole purchase decision. Journey Japan gives hotspot use a separate allowance, lists KDDI on the individual unlimited-plan pages, and applies a 180-day activation deadline.

The short answer: Journey Japan's unlimited claim applies to data used on the phone. Hotspot is limited to 7GB, 15GB or 30GB across the corresponding plan, according to the current FAQ. Roaming eSIM is the clearer choice when a traveler wants a lower-cost fixed allowance with the price, validity, operator list and top-up status visible before checkout.

What Journey Japan's unlimited launch includes

The launch announcement appeared on August 6, 2026. Journey Japan's live plan pages still carry the core promise: no daily cap and no throttling on the unlimited plan's ordinary phone data.

The prices are a snapshot, not a permanent tariff. The original launch offer was due to end on August 31 Japan time, while the site now promotes a separate September code for fixed-data plans. Check the final total rather than assuming a launch discount still applies.

The unlimited plans are intended for travelers who stream, upload large files, use video calls or do not want to monitor phone-data consumption. Someone using maps, messages, tickets and occasional social media may spend less with a fixed allowance.

Unlimited phone data does not mean unlimited hotspot

Journey Japan's current FAQ is more specific than the headline. It says each True Unlimited plan has a dedicated hotspot allowance matching the plan length: 7GB for seven days, 15GB for 15 days and 30GB for 30 days.

That allowance appears to be one total pool for the plan. The FAQ does not describe a daily reset. A traveler who uses 5GB on a laptop during the first two days of a seven-day plan may therefore have only 2GB of hotspot allowance left.

This distinction matters for remote work and group travel:

• streaming directly on the phone falls under the unlimited phone-data claim;
• sharing data with a laptop or tablet uses the hotspot allowance;
• a family should not assume that one phone can supply unlimited data to every device; and
• large laptop updates or cloud backups can consume the hotspot pool quickly.

The provider's broader comparison page also uses expansive hotspot language, including "unlimited supported." The numeric FAQ is the more useful purchase rule because it states an actual allowance. Save that term and confirm it again at checkout.

Which Japanese network does the plan use?

Journey Japan's general plan page names NTT Docomo and KDDI. The individual 30-day unlimited plan, as well as the reviewed 7 and 15-day pages, identifies the network as KDDI.

That does not establish automatic switching between KDDI and NTT Docomo. Treat the network shown on the selected product page or order as the plan-specific answer.

Journey Japan also advertises 99% data coverage across Japan. That is the provider's coverage claim, not a promise of service in every tunnel, mountain area, basement or crowded venue. Check the named network's coverage around places where the connection matters, especially rural accommodation, ski areas, islands and long road routes.

One public Japan travel discussion includes both a positive Journey Japan experience and a report of slow or dropped service while connected through IIJ. Those accounts show why the plan identifier matters, but a small discussion cannot establish typical performance for the new unlimited product.

The 180-day activation deadline can start service automatically

Each reviewed unlimited product page gives the plan a 180-day activation period. Journey Japan says that if the traveler has not activated it by the end of that period, the plan activates automatically.

The FAQ also says the usage period begins after installation and activation. Use the order instructions to distinguish purchase, installation and activation for the exact profile.

A practical setup sequence is:

1. Confirm the exact phone model supports eSIM and is carrier unlocked.
2. Buy the duration that matches the Japan dates.
3. Save the QR code and support details somewhere other than the phone.
4. Install over reliable internet, following the timing in the order email.
5. Select the Journey Japan line for mobile data after arrival.
6. Turn on data roaming for that travel line if the instructions require it.
7. Turn off mobile-data switching so the home line cannot take over unexpectedly.

Calls, SMS and a Japanese phone number are not included

The reviewed Journey Japan pages describe mobile data. They do not promise a Japanese phone number, ordinary calls or SMS.

The phrase "keep your number" means the travel profile can coexist with the usual line on a compatible dual-SIM phone. It does not mean the Journey Japan plan carries the home number or supplies a local number.

WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal and other internet services can use the data connection. Bank verification texts and ordinary calls still depend on the home line, its roaming support and its charges. Disable data roaming on the home line if you do not intend to use it for data abroad, and ask the home carrier how incoming texts, voicemail and Wi-Fi Calling behave in Japan.

Refund protection is narrow

Journey Japan's terms say all sales are final and refunds are issued at the company's discretion. A refund may be considered for a verified technical failure or system error that prevents activation or normal use.

The same terms exclude several common purchase mistakes:

• a carrier-locked phone;
• an incompatible device;
• user setup error;
• accidental deletion of the profile; and
• network-performance problems beyond the provider's control.

Compatibility and installation checks are therefore part of the financial decision, not only technical preparation. Do not delete a profile while troubleshooting unless support tells you to do so.

Journey Japan unlimited versus Roaming eSIM

The two options suit different data patterns. Journey Japan sells a premium high-use plan with no stated phone-data threshold. Roaming eSIM offers fixed and daily high-speed allowances that show the threshold and any reduced-speed continuation before purchase.

Journey Japan can be the better fit for a creator, heavy streamer or traveler doing frequent large phone uploads who accepts the higher price and separate hotspot limit. Choose it when high phone-data use justifies USD 29 to USD 79 and the finite hotspot pool is enough. Choose Roaming eSIM when a transparent fixed allowance, lower upfront price or broader route choice matters more than unlimited phone use.

Whichever plan you buy, verify the device lock, save the setup details offline, prevent the home SIM from using unintended roaming data and test the connection before leaving the airport.
