Kyushu Shinkansen will reopen its full route on September 18
JR Kyushu plans to reopen the closed Kumamoto to Shin-Minamata section with the first trains on Friday, September 18, 2026. Through Shinkansen service between Shin-Osaka and Kagoshima-Chuo is also scheduled to return that day.
The reopening reconnects the full high-speed route, but it does not restore the old timetable in full. Trains will slow near Shin-Yatsushiro, some services will not run, and a separate conventional railway closure between Uto and Yatsushiro is expected to continue until around mid-October.
The traveler decision: keep a Kyushu itinerary dated September 18 or later if the revised train times work, but recheck the exact service before departure. For travel through September 17, the Kumamoto to Shin-Minamata gap remains and needs a different route.
What changes on September 18
JR Kyushu's August 27 restoration notice confirms four practical changes:
- the Kumamoto to Shin-Minamata Shinkansen section is scheduled to reopen from the first train;
- Hakata to Kumamoto keeps the timetable used before the earthquake;
- through trains between Kagoshima-Chuo and Honshu return at about 90% of their pre-earthquake frequency; and
- trains slow near Shin-Yatsushiro while temporary repairs remain in place.
Southbound trains can reach Kagoshima-Chuo up to about eight minutes later than before. Northbound trains can leave Kagoshima-Chuo up to about nine minutes earlier. A traveler using an old screenshot or printed timetable could therefore miss a train even though the route has reopened.
JR West says Mizuho, Sakura and Tsubame services from the Sanyo Shinkansen continue to terminate at Kumamoto through September 17. From September 18, through services between Shin-Osaka and Kagoshima-Chuo are scheduled to resume.
The reopening timetable is modified, not normal
The phrase "full route" describes physical connectivity from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo. It does not mean every train, departure time and connection returns to its former pattern.

Smart EX warns of timetable changes and some train cancellations because of reduced-speed operation. It also says a one-year advance reservation may be confirmed on a different train or at a different departure time. Check the final reservation, not only the journey originally requested.
Allow a larger connection margin at Hakata, Kumamoto and Kagoshima-Chuo during the first days of operation. Separate tickets, flights and activities do not automatically move when a revised train arrives later.
Tickets for September 18 onward go on sale September 1
Sales for the Kumamoto to Kagoshima-Chuo section for travel from September 18 are due to reopen at 12:00 Japan time on Tuesday, September 1.
That time matters if the route is part of a fixed September itinerary. Availability before noon does not prove that a train is sold out because sales for the affected section have been suspended. Search again after the sales window opens.
Travelers with an existing one-year advance request should check the confirmed train and departure time after JR processes it. Smart EX says confirmations for September 27 to October 1 travel will begin in sequence after noon on September 1.
Use the booking account or sales channel that holds the reservation. Do not make a second booking until you know whether the first request was confirmed, changed or cancelled.
What to do if the trip is before September 18
JR Kyushu's English restoration sheet shows an alternative all-rail route between Hakata and Kagoshima while the gap remains. It uses the Sonic from Hakata to Oita, the Nichirin from Oita to Miyazaki, and the Kirishima from Miyazaki to Kagoshima-Chuo. The listed section times add up to roughly seven and a half hours before connection waits.
That is a long detour, not a like-for-like Shinkansen replacement. Compare it with a domestic flight, intercity bus or moving the affected overnight stay. Availability, road conditions and baggage rules must be checked for the actual date.
Do not assume a local replacement bus bridges the Shinkansen gap for every visitor. The buses listed on JR Kyushu's emergency page serve parts of the conventional Uto to Yatsushiro corridor and give priority to school travel. They are not presented as a direct substitute for a Hakata to Kagoshima Shinkansen journey.
The Kagoshima Main Line remains a separate closure
The conventional Kagoshima Main Line between Uto and Yatsushiro is aiming to reopen around mid-October. JR Kyushu has not announced a precise date, and aftershocks could change the outlook.
This matters for local stops south of Kumamoto, not just long-distance travel. A route planner may show the Shinkansen working from September 18 while a local connection that uses the conventional line is still unavailable or reduced.
New-Yatsushiro and Yatsushiro are also different stations. Check the exact station name, the transfer needed, and whether each leg uses the Shinkansen, the conventional railway or a road service.
A reopened Shinkansen does not mean every railway around Kumamoto is back to normal. Build the itinerary one leg at a time and confirm the operator for each leg.
Refunds depend on the ticket and where it was bought
JR Kyushu says eligible tickets can be refunded without a handling fee when a passenger cancels because of the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake. The general notice covers tickets whose validity includes a date through September 18 and that arrive, depart or pass through JR Kyushu lines, the Kyushu Shinkansen or Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen.
Bring a paper ticket to a JR station and make the request within one year of the travel date. For an internet reservation, follow the notice inside Smart EX, Express, e5489 or JR Kyushu's booking service. For a package bought from a travel agency, contact that agency.
The separate JR Kyushu Rail Pass refund notice says unused All Kyushu, Northern Kyushu and Southern Kyushu passes can qualify when a traveler cancels because of the earthquake. A pass or ticket that has already been used does not qualify under that notice.
Ask the seller about the exact booking before cancelling accommodation or buying a replacement route. Hotel, airline and attraction terms are separate from JR's rail refund policy.
