Kyivstar Travel SIM starts its four-week clock at payment

Kyivstar launched Travel SIM on August 25, 2026 as a separate travel eSIM for mobile data in 38 countries. It is open to customers of Kyivstar and other Ukrainian mobile operators, with four packages from 5GB to 40GB.

The detail that matters before a trip is not the starting price. Kyivstar's live Travel SIM shop says the four-week package begins immediately after payment. Buying it two weeks early would use half the validity before departure.

The practical answer: buy Kyivstar Travel SIM close enough to departure that its remaining four-week period covers the trip, but leave time to receive and install the QR code on reliable Wi-Fi. Choose another Roaming eSIM when the route falls outside its 38-country list, the trip needs a different validity period, or you want to compare country-specific fixed and daily packages before checkout.

Kyivstar Travel SIM prices and validity

Every current package lasts four weeks. The allowance changes, but the country list and data-only service are the same.

Kyivstar says unused data is cancelled when the four weeks end. If the allowance runs out first, mobile data stops rather than moving to an unplanned per-megabyte charge. The traveler can add another package in the My Kyivstar app.

The shop also says multiple packages can be active at once. Kyivstar does not say that a second purchase extends the first package's clock. Check the balance and expiry shown in the app rather than assuming a new purchase resets every allowance.

Buy close to departure because validity starts at payment

Many travel eSIM products separate purchase, installation and first network connection. Kyivstar Travel SIM currently does not use first arrival as the published start trigger. Its shop states that the package starts as soon as payment is completed.

This creates a planning trade-off. Buying at the airport preserves more usable days but leaves less time to solve payment, email or QR-code problems. Buying weeks in advance gives more setup time but wastes validity.

A practical sequence is:

1. Confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
2. Check that every country on the itinerary appears in Kyivstar's current list.
3. Save a copy of the normal SIM's roaming terms and decide whether it should remain active for calls or texts.
4. Buy the package shortly before departure, allowing enough time to receive the QR code.
5. Open the QR code on a second screen, then install the profile while stable Wi-Fi is available.
6. Confirm the package expiry in My Kyivstar before leaving.

The service covers 38 countries, not every international trip

Kyivstar lists 38 countries across Europe and selected long-haul destinations:

The press release also names Guadeloupe, Martinique and French Guiana, plus selected islands and territories including the Azores, Canary Islands, Corsica, Ibiza, Madeira, San Marino and Vatican City. Those additions make it important to check the live shop for a specific route instead of treating the headline count as a complete geography lesson.

Travel SIM does not provide data inside Ukraine. It is an outbound roaming product, not a replacement for a Ukrainian domestic plan.

A new number does not mean ordinary calls or SMS

Kyivstar says the travel profile has a new number, but it is designed only for mobile internet abroad. It does not include ordinary calls or SMS. Service numbers and emergency numbers are the stated exceptions.

That distinction matters for bank codes, airline alerts and people who expect to receive calls on the new number. Keep the usual SIM available if those services are needed and its roaming terms are acceptable. Select Kyivstar Travel SIM for cellular data and prevent the normal line from using roaming data if that could cause charges.

Device support is narrower than eSIM compatibility

The phone needs an EID, eSIM support and no carrier lock. Kyivstar adds a regional condition: it guarantees operation only on compatible devices certified in Ukraine.

The shop specifically excludes locked or unofficially unlocked phones and iPhones built with two physical SIM slots. It also warns that individual model exceptions can exist even when a product family normally supports eSIM.

Use *#06# to check for an EID, then confirm that the phone settings include an option to add an eSIM. Kyivstar says the QR code must be displayed on another device for scanning. If the email does not arrive, the order may also appear in the shop account.

Kyivstar Travel SIM versus Roaming eSIM

The better choice depends on the route and purchase timing, not the brand name alone.

The public Roaming eSIM catalog was checked on August 30. It returned 15 Poland packages, 16 Portugal packages, 37 United States packages and 33 South Korea packages. Those catalogs included different fixed and daily allowances, validity periods, network fields and top-up status. Availability and prices can change, so the selected card is the final record.
