Locarno Film Festival 2026 guide: tickets, Piazza Grande and trains

The 79th Locarno Film Festival runs from Wednesday, August 5 through Saturday, August 15, 2026. The programme is spread across Piazza Grande and 12 other cinemas in Locarno, so a first visit works best when you choose one or two films, check their language and subtitle line, then build the train plan around the last screening.

Piazza Grande is the experience that makes Locarno different. Thousands of people watch together in an open-air square, but it also creates the main practical problems: August weather, late finishes, seat choice and a dense crowd trying to move at once. Do not buy a film because a headline names its stars and assume the rest will sort itself out.

This guide was checked on the festival's opening day, August 5. The programme can still change during the event. Use the official festival site for the current screening page and ticket checkout, and check the live SBB timetable before any late return.

Opening-day coverage is accelerating around the films and guests. Le Monde's August 5 report names Isabella Rossellini, Monica Bellucci, Isabelle Huppert, Sandrine Kiberlain and other guests, alongside the 17-film international competition and the Red & Black retrospective.

That coverage helps with the cultural choice. It does not answer the questions a visitor has after choosing a film. Current public discussions ask whether a full pass is necessary, how late trains work, whether Bellinzona or Lugano is a sensible base, what can be done without accreditation and how to navigate Locarno between screenings.

Search results split those answers across the festival, Ticino Tourism, TILO, accommodation pages, Italian-language ticket explainers and general Locarno guides. The useful gap is one English visitor plan that keeps live programme decisions with the organizer and explains how the day fits together.

Choose films by time, venue and language

The longest programme is not the best itinerary. Each film listing should answer four questions before it reaches your shortlist:

1. Which venue shows it?
2. What is the original language?
3. Which subtitle languages are listed for that screening?
4. When can you realistically reach the next venue or train?

Original-language films do not all carry the same subtitle combination. Check the individual screening, not only the film title. A film may have another showing at a different time or venue, and that second slot may fit the trip better.

For a first day, leave at least 45 minutes between screenings in different buildings. The walk may be short on a normal map, but the exit, toilet queue and next admission line consume time. A rushed four-film plan tends to fail at the handoffs.

Piazza Grande and the indoor cinemas also solve different needs. The square gives you the communal festival night. An indoor cinema gives you a more controlled seat, temperature and sound environment. If heat, rain or late travel is a concern, make the indoor screening the fixed part of the day and treat the square as the weather-dependent choice.

Public ticket or pass?

You do not need professional accreditation to attend ordinary public screenings. The official festival route sells tickets and passes for the public, while professional accreditation covers a different use case.

Choose a single-screening ticket when one film or one Piazza Grande evening is the reason for the trip. A day pass makes more sense when two or more compatible screenings fit the same date. A festival pass is for someone who will attend repeatedly, not a shortcut around checking venue capacity or screening conditions.

Do not take a Reddit comment about walk-up availability as inventory. A current Locarno travel discussion says single evening tickets can be bought without committing to a pass, but the official checkout is the source for what remains available tonight. Buy through the festival route and keep the confirmation available offline.

Before payment, check whether the product covers a specific screening, a day or a longer period. Also check reservation requirements, admission cutoffs and the transport-validity wording shown with that exact title. An old price table from a previous edition is not a 2026 source.

How Piazza Grande changes the plan

Piazza Grande is an outdoor cinema in the centre of Locarno. Filmitalia describes capacity of up to 8,000 spectators, while current news coverage simply calls it a venue for several thousand. Either description leads to the same visitor decision: arrive with time to enter, locate the correct area and settle before the presentation starts.

The yellow chairs are set over cobbles. Wear shoes that handle uneven stone and standing in a queue. Take a light layer even after a hot afternoon because an outdoor screening can feel cooler once the sun drops. Use a compact rain layer instead of an umbrella that blocks the view or becomes awkward between seats.

Check the organizer's notice if rain is forecast. Do not assume an outdoor screening will be cancelled, moved or refunded in a particular way because a previous edition handled rain differently. Save the screening page before setting out, then refresh it on mobile data or Wi-Fi close to departure.

Agree on a meeting point outside the densest seating area. "At the yellow chairs" is not precise enough when thousands of people are leaving. Use a named street corner, station entrance or public building that everyone has saved.

Getting to Locarno by train

The railway station is the practical arrival point for most visitors. TILO serves Locarno from Bellinzona and the wider Ticino network, while the RE80 corridor connects through Lugano and Mendrisio. Use SBB Mobile or the SBB website for the current door-to-door journey.

TILO's 2026 festival notice confirms that a valid festival admission title includes travel across all Arcobaleno fare zones for the duration stated on that title. Do not assume this includes a flight, an international train or travel outside the Arcobaleno network. Keep both the admission title and any separate ticket needed for the rest of the journey.

Driving usually creates more work than it removes. Locarno is busy during the festival, parking can be expensive and the central square is not a destination for a car. If accommodation has parking, leave the car there and use the train or local transport for the screenings.

The 02:00 festival train matters

TILO has added a 02:00 RE80 departure from Locarno during the festival, except on Sunday, August 9. It reaches Lugano at 02:31 and Mendrisio at 02:53. On the night of August 9 into August 10, a replacement bus leaves at the same time and continues to Chiasso.

This makes Lugano a possible base for late screenings, but only when the final connection from Lugano to the accommodation still works. The 02:00 service is not a blanket promise that every town, hotel or cross-border destination has a connection after it.

Save the exact journey on the day. Check whether engineering work, a platform change or the August 9 bus affects it. If the selected film finishes close to departure, decide before the screening whether you will leave promptly or use a taxi. Do not start that calculation while the closing credits are already running.

Where to stay if Locarno is full

Pick accommodation by the last journey, not by the map distance alone.

Locarno and Muralto

These are the simplest bases for walking to central venues and reaching the station. They reduce late-night risk, but festival demand can make availability and prices difficult.

Bellinzona

Bellinzona is on the S20 rail corridor to Locarno. It can work well when the stay is near the station and the chosen screenings finish before the saved return. It is also useful for a visitor who wants a quieter morning away from the festival centre.

Lugano

Lugano has the clearest current late-night evidence because the extra RE80 reaches it at 02:31. A hotel far from Lugano station may still need a local bus or taxi after arrival, so check the final leg.

Ascona

Ascona is close geographically but not on the rail line. It can be a good holiday base, yet the late return depends on buses, taxis or accommodation transport. Confirm that handoff before choosing an evening programme.

Do not book across the Italian border merely because the straight-line distance looks short. The last cross-border connection follows its own timetable, and a festival admission title does not automatically cover it.

Weather, heat and the space between films

Locarno can be hot in August, then receive rain or thunderstorms. Check the local MeteoSwiss forecast rather than a generic Switzerland forecast. The mountain and lake setting can make a national summary too broad for an outdoor evening.

Leave an indoor break in the afternoon. Carry water, sun protection and the medication you need, but check the current venue rules before packing a large bag. Piazza Grande is not the place to discover that the item you carried all day cannot enter.

If the forecast looks uncertain, avoid building the entire day around one outdoor slot. Choose an indoor screening you genuinely want to see and keep a second option available in the official programme. A weather backup should still be a film, not two hours spent searching for a plan after the rain begins.

Accessibility needs a venue-level check

The festival uses Piazza Grande and 12 other cinemas. Access cannot be inferred from a general statement about Locarno. Check the official accessibility information for the exact venue and screening, then contact the organizer if you need wheelchair space, step-free entry, hearing support, audio description, relaxed conditions or assistance between sites.

Piazza Grande has cobbles and temporary seating. The indoor cinemas differ in layout and equipment. A companion should save the accessible entrance rather than only the venue address, because those points may not be the same.

Language access also belongs in the screening check. The programme line for the individual showing should confirm original language and subtitles. Do not assume English subtitles because an English synopsis appears online.

Build a Locarno screen-day toolkit

Install and sign in before a full festival day. Store the ticket as a local file or wallet pass if the official route supports it. A screenshot is useful only when it preserves the working admission information, so do not crop out a code, date or seat detail.

Is public transport included with a festival ticket?

Should I rent a car for the festival?
