DEF CON 34 guide: badges, schedule, transport and phone security

DEF CON 34 runs from Thursday, August 6 through Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall. The official date announcement confirms the venue and four-day window. Preregistration closed on July 31. People who already preregistered must collect their Human badge in Las Vegas, while everyone else can still buy entry at the door for USD 520 in cash.

The first decision is simple. If you preregistered, your electronic Human badge is set aside, so there is no need to join the overnight LineCon only to protect it. If you did not preregister, bring exact cash and understand that an electronic badge is not guaranteed. Thursday is mainly the day to solve registration, merchandise, the venue layout and your plan for Friday.

DEF CON 34 at a glance

Pick the correct badge line

Three arrival paths are being mixed together in current search results. Use the one that matches how the badge was bought.

The current DEF CON registration notice says a preregistered badge is reserved. A recent badge-pickup discussion confirms that pickup can happen after Thursday morning. Save the ticket QR code to the phone and also keep an offline screenshot or printed copy. Turn screen brightness up before the scanner rather than searching through an inbox at the front of the line.

Cash buyers should not rely on an ATM inside or beside the venue. The published rule is cash only, and the current LineCon guidance asks for exact change. Withdraw the money at a bank or a trusted machine before reaching LineCon. Keep it secure and separate from the rest of the trip budget.

One current commercial guide says there was no online preregistration for 2026. That is wrong. Preregistration existed, closed on July 31 and reserved a Human badge for the buyer. The distinction matters because a preregistered visitor does not need to copy the arrival strategy of a cash buyer.

What to do on Thursday

Thursday is useful even if you skip LineCon. Collect the badge, learn the West Hall layout, open HackerTracker and find the villages that matter. Main stage, village, contest and social schedules are too large to understand for the first time while walking between rooms.

Official merchandise opens at 8am under the current organizer notice. A badge is not required to enter the merchandise line on Thursday. If one specific size or item matters, go to merchandise first. If it does not, do not spend most of the day in that queue because a stranger said it is part of the experience.

Preregistered visitors can arrive later, collect the reserved badge and use the remaining time to do four things:

1. Mark registration, the information desk and two priority villages on the venue map.
2. Check Friday's first session and the room it uses.
3. Test the route between the hotel and West Hall before the morning rush.
4. Set one meeting place with friends that still works when messages arrive late.

Do not assume Thursday is empty. Communities, meetups, merchandise and informal activity begin before the main Friday schedule. HackerTracker is the practical source for what is actually running.

Build a schedule that survives DEF CON

DEF CON 34 has five main talk tracks plus workshops, Demo Labs, contests, communities, music and dozens of topic-specific villages. The One consolidates many of these sources, but HackerTracker is the official schedule app and now contains the 2026 talks.

Choose one anchor and one fallback for each half-day. An anchor is the session you would be disappointed to miss. A fallback is a nearby village, contest or talk that does not require crossing the building when the first room fills.

For a first visit, the villages are often easier to use than a list of famous speakers. Current 2026 listings include hands-on work in areas such as hardware, industrial control systems, radio, social engineering, telecom, car security and packet analysis. Some activities need a laptop or prior registration. Many do not. Check the prerequisite field before carrying equipment all day.

Workshops are a separate case. The published workshop registration opened July 14 and places were expected to fill quickly. A workshop name appearing in the schedule does not mean there is an open walk-in seat. Keep the confirmation available offline if you already registered.

Leave gaps. The West Hall is large, rooms fill and conversations become part of the day. A plan with twelve consecutive sessions usually turns into a plan spent looking at the time.

Do you need a laptop or a burner phone?

You do not need a laptop to attend talks, explore many villages or meet people. Bring one only when a workshop, contest or lab you chose requires it. The current village and contest listings name the prerequisites, including the Linux tools or adapters needed for some hands-on activities.

A burner phone is also not an automatic requirement. Current first-timer discussions range from leaving every personal device at home to using a normal updated phone with sensible settings. The useful answer depends on your threat model, the data on the device and what you intend to connect to.

For a normal attendee phone:

• Install operating-system and app updates before travel.
• Remove saved networks that the phone should not rejoin automatically.
• Turn off automatic Wi-Fi joining and Bluetooth discovery when they are not needed.
• Use a strong device passcode and current account recovery details.
• Do not install profiles, certificates or apps from an unofficial QR code or stranger.
• Confirm any DEF CON network name and setup instructions through the official information source at the event.
• Back up important data before flying and keep work secrets off a personal device when company policy requires it.

This is more useful than treating every radio signal as an attack. It also does not promise that an updated phone is invulnerable. People with a higher-risk role, sensitive client data or employer rules should follow their organization's travel-security process.

Mobile data is useful, not a security shield

A mobile data line gives you another way to reach HackerTracker, maps, rides and messages without joining hotel or public Wi-Fi. That is a practical choice at a cybersecurity conference. It does not make a phone anonymous, stop malicious apps, fix an unpatched operating system or guarantee cellular capacity inside a crowded hall.

Use cellular data for ordinary travel tasks when you prefer not to join an unfamiliar network. If you use conference Wi-Fi, get its exact network and certificate instructions from DEF CON's current information channel. Do not use a lookalike network name from a screenshot, old blog post or social reply.

Save the essential information locally even with two data options:

• badge QR code and order details
• hotel name, address and room-booking confirmation
• venue map and two schedule priorities per half-day
• monorail or bus route back to the hotel
• group meeting point and one contact number
• travel insurance and emergency contact details

The offline copy solves a dead battery, weak signal and overloaded app as well as a network-security concern.

Getting from the airport to the convention center

Harry Reid International Airport lists taxis, authorized rideshare, public buses and shuttles. Uber and Lyft use signed pickup areas in the parking garages. Check the terminal before following an app pin because Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 use different paths.

RTC Route 108 is the direct public-bus option from Terminal 1 Zero Level along Paradise Road. The current route map includes the Las Vegas Convention Center area. Terminal 3 passengers can use the airport's inter-terminal shuttle to the Terminal 1 bus stop. Check the live RTC schedule on arrival because a PDF timetable does not report a delay.

The Las Vegas Monorail does not serve the airport. It becomes useful after check-in when the hotel is near MGM Grand, Horseshoe/Paris, Flamingo/Caesars Palace, Harrah's/The LINQ, Westgate or SAHARA. Ride to Boingo Station at Las Vegas Convention Center.

Boingo Station is not the West Hall door. The monorail's current directions send West Hall visitors through North Hall and the Paradise Bridge, or through Central Hall to the complimentary LVCC Loop. Allow time for that indoor transfer. The station has ticket machines but no customer service counter, so solve a mobile-ticket problem before arriving there when possible.

Current monorail hours are 7am to 2am on Thursday and 7am to 3am Friday through Sunday. A late party can still outlast the route or leave you far from the chosen station. Check the last useful journey as well as the system closing time.

Heat outside, cold rooms inside

The consolidated DEF CON FAQ warns that a short-looking Las Vegas walk can take 20 minutes, daytime heat can be extreme and conference rooms can feel cold. Bring comfortable shoes, a refillable water bottle and one light layer.

Check the National Weather Service Las Vegas forecast before each day. Avoid a long outdoor route at the hottest time because a map says two venues are adjacent. The monorail, a short authorized ride or an indoor campus transfer can be worth using even when the distance looks walkable.

Attendees who need mobility support should contact the current DEF CON accessibility team and verify the 2026 process rather than relying on an older HDA packet. The convention center route can involve long corridors, bridges and station elevators. A practical access plan includes the exact entrance, equipment arrangement and a backup if an elevator or route changes.

What to carry each day

DEF CON had not published a simple 2026 bag-dimension rule on the current pages reviewed for this guide. A clear-bag restriction from another Las Vegas event is not a DEF CON rule. Check HackerTracker, the information page and onsite signs before travel if the size of a backpack is critical.

A restrained day bag can hold:

• badge and an offline copy of the pickup QR code
• refillable water bottle
• light layer for cold rooms
• phone, charging cable and a modest power bank
• medication and accessibility items
• laptop and adapters only for a chosen activity
• exact cash stored securely if buying at the door

Do not attach stickers to convention-center property. Put trades and giveaways on your own notebook, badge board or another surface you own. Keep the event badge attached because a lost badge may require another full-price purchase.

Apps to install before reaching Las Vegas

Install apps from their official store listings. DEF CON's iPhone HackerTracker listing was updated again on August 4, 2026, and the Android listing is available from Google Play. Open the app before the flight, select DEF CON 34 and allow the current schedule to load. An old cached schedule is not a useful offline backup.

Why Roaming eSIM fits this trip

Can I still buy a DEF CON 34 badge?

Yes. Preregistration is closed, but current organizer guidance lists USD 520 cash entry at the door. Bring exact cash. An electronic badge is not guaranteed for cash buyers if stock runs out.

Is my preregistered electronic badge reserved?

Yes. The current 2026 organizer notice says it is set aside and will not be sold. You still have to redeem the ticket in Las Vegas, but you do not need to arrive at opening time to protect it.

Can I collect a preregistered badge on Friday?

Current organizer replies say registration remains available and a reserved badge can be collected after Thursday morning. Check the current hours in HackerTracker or with the information desk before making a late-arrival plan.

What happens at DEF CON on Thursday?

Registration and merchandise are the obvious jobs, with community activity and meetups around them. Use Thursday to learn West Hall and finalize Friday. Do not assume it is a normal full talk day or an empty setup day.

Do I need a laptop at DEF CON?

Only for activities that require one. Talks and many villages do not. Read the prerequisite field for the chosen workshop, contest or lab before carrying a laptop and adapters all day.

Do I need a burner phone?

Not automatically. Use the threat model and employer policy that fit the data on the device. A normal updated phone with automatic network joining disabled can suit many attendees, while high-risk work may justify a separate device.

Is it safe to use Wi-Fi at DEF CON?

Use only current setup details confirmed through DEF CON's official information channel. Do not trust a lookalike name or an old guide. Cellular data is another option for ordinary travel apps, but it does not make the phone immune to every attack.

What is the easiest transport to West Hall?

It depends on the hotel. Nearby properties may be walkable. Hotels along the monorail can use Boingo Station, then the indoor route or LVCC Loop to West Hall. RTC Route 108 is useful from Terminal 1 and along Paradise Road.

What should I bring for a first DEF CON?

The night-before check

1. Save the badge QR code and hotel address offline.
2. Load DEF CON 34 in HackerTracker and choose Friday's first anchor and fallback.
3. Confirm whether the arrival line is preregistered pickup, cash registration, Black Hat or training.
4. Download the Las Vegas map and mark West Hall, the hotel and the meeting point.
5. Update the phone, remove unwanted saved networks and turn off automatic joining.
6. Check the route from the hotel and the last useful return service.
7. Charge the phone and power bank, then pack water and a light layer.
8. Follow the selected Roaming eSIM package's activation instructions rather than assuming every plan starts the same way.

DEF CON rewards curiosity more than a perfect calendar. Solve the badge and transport first, choose a few activities that justify the trip, and leave enough room to follow something you did not know existed when the day started.
