Macao Golden Week 2026: borders, fireworks and getting around
Mainland China's National Day Golden Week runs October 1 to 7, 2026. Macao is preparing for heavier visitor flows, but it is not closing to travelers. Choose one part of the city per day, check your border before setting out, and avoid putting a timed return trip immediately after a fireworks show. The tourism office has live tools for attraction crowds and border conditions.

The fireworks are subject to weather. Police may activate crowd controls only where numbers require them. These are published plans, not a promise that every show or service will run unchanged.
Is a Macao visit during Golden Week worth keeping?
Yes, if your hotel and cross-border travel are arranged and you can trade a rigid checklist for a flexible day. The National Day celebrations and international fireworks contest give the week a particular character. It is a poor week to expect empty heritage lanes or make a tight same-day connection across a border.

Check the border before leaving your hotel
The Macao Public Security Police Force's border-port platform shows current camera images at entry and exit areas. Open the port you intend to use, check both directions when relevant, and leave time for immigration on each side. The images help you see congestion; they are not a guaranteed numerical wait time. Check again before your return, especially if you have a ferry, flight or separately booked onward ticket.
If you are coming from Hong Kong, choose your ferry or bridge ticket for the port you can reach. The Hong Kong government expects increased cross-boundary traffic during the mainland holiday and advises travelers to avoid peaks where possible. Treat a Hong Kong to Macao day trip as a full travel day, not a spare afternoon between timed reservations. From Zhuhai or Hengqin, inspect the relevant Macao-side port and follow the official immigration requirements for your nationality and route.
Where will Macao feel busiest?
Police say they are monitoring the Ruins of St. Paul's, Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, Senado Square and Taipa Village. They may direct pedestrians along one-way routes or restrict entry when crowds build. The police notice describes possible staged controls, not an all-day closure. Follow staff and signs rather than a saved walking route through a temporarily one-way street.
Before choosing a sightseeing stop, use the tourism office's visitor-flow forecast, which covers 113 attractions. It is a forecast, so keep a second choice nearby. Pair a peninsula walk with a museum rather than committing to a cross-city transfer whenever one square looks busy. Fireworks on October 1 and 4
The Macao Government Tourism Office schedules two displays each evening, at 9 p.m. and 9:40 p.m., over the water across from Macau Tower. A drone finale is planned after the October 4 displays. The Fireworks Carnival at the Macao Science Center waterfront is scheduled from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. on both nights, with food, performances and games. It is one base if you want more than a brief viewing stop, but it will also draw people.
Choose a meeting point away from the tightest waterfront exit before your group separates. If you have a child or someone who needs a less crowded route, do not assume a clear view is worth the slowest walk out. Check the official fireworks site on the day for weather changes. Last year's October dates are not a reliable substitute for the current notice.
The government's National Day programme also lists free admission on October 1 to the Macao Grand Prix Museum, Macao Museum and the Macao Science Center exhibition centre. Check each venue's current entry and capacity rules; free admission does not mean a short queue.
Buses, light rail and the pedestrian streets
Macao's Transport Bureau notice says seasonal bus routes 3BX, 17T, 21AT, 26AT and 101XS will operate October 1 to 7, while route 25AX has extended holiday service. It also says the light rail will run more frequent trains, with the final departure extended to 11:59 p.m. during those dates. A temporary stop move may matter more than a route number when you are standing near a controlled street. Check the bureau's app or live site before leaving.
The October 1 to 6 pedestrian zones are planned from noon to 7 p.m. in Taipa Village and the old-street area near Rua de Nossa Senhora do Amparo. Police may adjust vehicle access and bus stops. Walk the final segment where possible and agree on a fallback pickup point outside the restrictions. On fireworks nights, leave a generous margin for the return; the last light-rail departure does not guarantee that every shuttle, ferry or connection will still be available.
Keep the useful tools available offline too
Save your hotel address, return ticket, port name and group meeting point before entering a dense area. Download a map of Macao and note a second route back. The tourism office's Experience Macao app and visitor-flow site are useful for changing a sightseeing plan; the border cameras and live transport updates need a connection. Weather can also alter the fireworks schedule.
If you are out for several hours with children, look for the public-toilet navigation QR signs. The Municipal Affairs Bureau says it has installed more than 200 of them across the city and is increasing cleaning in busy areas for the holiday. A saved offline map still helps when your phone has no signal.
OpenSim's Macao eSIM page owns plan selection. Its public catalog listed a 1 GB, seven-day plan at US$1.40 on September 30, 2026, with top-up supported for that specific plan; final prices can change. If your trip includes Hong Kong, Macao and mainland China, compare the three-area OpenSim plan page against Macao-only coverage. That route match is the advantage, not a claim that data can bypass border queues or guarantee signal in a crowd. A working home roaming plan or local SIM may be better for some visitors.
