Christmas tree and market stalls in front of Munich's illuminated New Town Hall in November 2024

Munich's main Christmas market at Marienplatz opens on Friday, November 20, 2026, earlier than its previous opening pattern. It closes on Sunday, November 22, for Totensonntag, then continues through December 24, when stalls close at 14:00. For a market-focused trip, visit before Christmas rather than assuming the stalls remain for Christmas Day or New Year.

That first weekend needs care. Friday and Saturday work for the market, but Sunday does not. Families hoping to join the free Himmelswerkstatt craft sessions need a later date and a separate registration; the workshop does not begin on opening weekend.

Munich Christmas market dates and opening hours

The official Christkindlmarkt website publishes the Marienplatz schedule below. These hours belong to the main city market, not every Christmas event across Munich.

Monday-Saturday10:00-21:00
Sundays, except November 2210:00-20:00
Sunday, November 22Closed
Christmas Eve, December 2410:00-14:00

The city's 2026 programme confirms the first earlier opening on the Friday before Totensonntag. It lists the tree lighting for November 20 at 17:00. Opening day therefore offers a different visit from an ordinary morning browse: choose it if the lighting is your priority, not because you expect a quiet square.

The city also permits stalls to stay open voluntarily until 22:00 on November 27 and December 12. That is not a guarantee that every stall will trade late. Use the normal closing time when making plans that depend on a particular seller.

A visit after ChristmasChoose another confirmed attractionMarienplatz's market has finished

For a short break, one afternoon and evening around the Old Town can be enough for the main market. You do not need to visit every district's stalls or leave the city each day to make the trip worthwhile. Give a day trip its own time rather than squeezing it between a workshop and dinner.

A manageable route around Marienplatz

Start at Marienplatz for the tree and Town Hall setting, then browse toward Rindermarkt and the nativity stalls by St Peter's. The organizer describes the Kripperlmarkt as a specialist market for nativity figures, stables and accessories. It is a better stop for someone interested in those crafts than another generic souvenir circuit.

Keep the route flexible. Browse a few stalls, take an indoor break and return if everyone still wants to. With a pushchair, a wheelchair or someone who tires when standing, avoid making an uninterrupted evening in the square the only plan.

For music, the organizer lists Town Hall balcony performances Sunday-Thursday from 17:15, rather than a concert every evening. Check the programme for the day you choose; market opening hours do not establish a performance timetable.

Treat saved maps with care. The organizer's overview-map link currently leads to a page titled 2025. Use it only as older orientation, not proof of this year's stall locations, toilets or parade arrangements. Follow current signs and the latest organizer notices on arrival.

Himmelswerkstatt: free crafts for schoolchildren, with registration

The Kindermuseum's Himmelswerkstatt page gives the details that matter before promising a place to a child:

  • Dates: November 26-December 13, 2026.
  • Ages: schoolchildren aged 6-12, attending without an accompanying adult. Preschool children are not included.
  • Sessions: 14:30-16:00 and 16:30-18:00.
  • Location: the Ratstrinkstube in the New Town Hall, with the meeting point at the Town Hall entrance by Fischbrunnen 15 minutes beforehand.
  • Booking: free, limited places, with online registration opening ten days before the chosen date. A maximum of two sessions may be booked per child.

Children make small gifts through changing craft activities. This is not a drop-in play area for a toddler, and the event venue is not the Kindermuseum's regular museum address. A six-year-old's school status also matters; check eligibility rather than relying on age alone.

If the workshop is central to the trip, set a reminder for registration and keep an alternative afternoon in mind. A free programme with limited places is not a guaranteed space. Let the organizer know if you can no longer attend so another child can use the booking.

The December 13 Krampus parade is a different kind of visit

The official Krampus programme confirms Sunday, December 13, from 15:00 to 17:00. The route runs through the Old Town, starting around Augustinerstraße and finishing by the Old Town Hall, with costumed groups along the way.

Expect masks, bells and loud performances rather than a quiet Christmas procession. Whether that is enjoyable depends on the child or adult, not simply whether the event is described as family-friendly. Show children what the costumes look like beforehand, choose somewhere you can leave easily and agree a meeting point away from the busiest part of the route.

If you mainly want to shop or dislike dense crowds, another date may suit you better. Do not put the parade, a workshop session and a tightly timed train departure into the same afternoon without allowing for the route and time needed to move around it.

Food, payments, toilets and access

Choose food by the displayed portion and total, and ask about ingredients if you have an allergy or dietary requirement. The presence of a vegan or gluten-free option somewhere in the market does not establish a particular stall's preparation or cross-contact practices.

The organizer's visitor questions say many traders take cards, sometimes with a minimum spend. Carry a payment backup and ask before ordering rather than assuming every stall accepts the same cards. If a drink includes a cup deposit, ask how to return it and whether you can keep the cup instead.

The official access guide lists an accessible toilet in the Town Hall's Prunkhof with a Euro-key lock, and a Toilette für Alle at Marienplatz station, to the right of exit D on the barrier level. Check your key and assistance needs before relying on a particular facility. The existence of accessible facilities does not remove queues or guarantee an unobstructed route through a busy square.

For Christmas Eve dinner or meals on December 25, contact the restaurant directly and reserve where required. The market's 14:00 finish is not a restaurant timetable. Do not assume either that the whole city closes or that a normal online opening-hours listing is enough for a holiday booking.

Airport travel, useful apps and mobile tickets

For the market, Marienplatz is served by the U3, U6 and S-Bahn. Check the journey for your actual travel date rather than assuming there are no engineering changes because it is Christmas-market season.

Munich Airport's transport guide lists S1 and S8 connections into the city, with approximately 40 minutes to the main railway station. That is not a guaranteed terminal-to-market transfer time. Add immigration, baggage collection, walking and any service changes before deciding whether an arrival-day booking is sensible.

Use the MVV app for local journeys and ticket choices. The current mobile-ticket guidance requires tickets to be bought and fully downloaded before boarding or passing platform barriers. A stored HandyTicket can be shown without mobile reception; keep your phone charged and carry the required photo ID.

MVV's account guidance also describes a planned November transition to the MVV ID. Check your login and follow the app's current notice before travelling instead of discovering an account problem at the platform. Have another ticket-purchase option if the app does not work. A screenshot of a route is not a travel ticket.

Other markets and the wider family trip

Tollwood is a separate festival on the Theresienwiese, not an extension of Marienplatz. The Tollwood winter guide explains its free market, ticketed shows and separate New Year's Eve event. Use that page for its booking and transport rules rather than assuming a Marienplatz visit includes them.

For a longer route, the Nuremberg Christmas market guide and Salzburg Christmas market guide help compare dates. Pick one extra destination you want to spend time in, then check return trains. Three rushed markets are not automatically better than one evening with time to sit down.

The Germany with kids guide covers broader family planning. On a cold or wet day, bring forward the indoor part of your itinerary. Snow is not a booking condition the market can promise.

Mobile data for a Munich market break

Mobile data is useful for checking a changed train, completing a ticket purchase or messaging family after splitting up. Download maps and travel documents beforehand, then use live information where freshness matters.

On November 6, OpenSim's public Germany plans included 1GB for 7 days at USD 1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD 3.00, both listed as eligible for top-up. For an overseas visitor facing a separate roaming charge, those are defined short-stay allowances to compare with the home carrier's terms. If your existing plan already includes enough Germany data, another purchase may be unnecessary.

Use the travel data calculator for your likely use, and check phone compatibility and installation timing before buying. An eSIM does not validate a transport ticket or guarantee reception at every crowded stall.

Sources and updates

The city and Christkindlmarkt pages above carry the market programme; Kindermuseum carries workshop registration, and the airport and MVV carry transport guidance. Recheck your visit date, workshop place and journey before travelling, especially around November 22 and Christmas Eve.
