Salzburg Christmas market 2026: dates, holidays and travel

Salzburg's main Christkindlmarkt runs from November 19, 2026 to January 1, 2027, on Domplatz and Residenzplatz, with parts of Kapitelplatz also included. Entry is free. It opens on December 25 and 26 from 11am to 6pm, so a Christmas Day visit is possible. Christmas Eve is shorter: 9am-3pm.
Those hours apply to the main market, not every Christmas attraction in Salzburg. Mirabellplatz finishes on December 31, Hellbrunn finishes on December 24, and the Mozartplatz ice rink continues later into January. Choose your dates and your dinner reservation before building a list of places to visit.
Salzburg Christmas market dates and holiday hours
The organizer's opening information and Salzburg Tourism's market listing give the following season and hours. Times are local.
| Day or date | Main Christkindlmarkt hours |
|---|---|
| Season | November 19, 2026-January 1, 2027 |
| Monday-Thursday | 10am-8:30pm |
| Friday | 10am-9pm |
| Saturday | 9am-9pm |
| Sunday and public holidays | 9am-8:30pm |
| December 7 | 10am-9pm |
| December 24 | 9am-3pm |
| December 25 and 26 | 11am-6pm |
| December 31 | Merchandise stalls until at least 6pm; selected food and drink stalls until 1am |
| January 1 | 11am-6pm |
On opening day, November 19, the official November programme lists market opening at 10am and a separate festive opening at 6pm by the tree on Residenzplatz. Arriving in the morning does not mean you have missed the evening ceremony.
Do not read the New Year's Eve 1am finish as a promise that every craft stall remains open until then. Likewise, an open Christmas market does not establish the hours of nearby shops, museums or restaurants.
Is Salzburg worth visiting on Christmas Day?
Yes, if you want a slower day centered on a market visit, a walk and a meal you have arranged. The main market's published December 25 hours give you an afternoon option. They do not make Christmas Day equivalent to an ordinary sightseeing weekday.
Book lunch or dinner directly with a restaurant or your accommodation. Confirm the date, serving time, menu and cancellation conditions rather than relying on a recommendation from a previous Christmas. For a child, allergy or dietary requirement, ask about the actual holiday menu before booking.
On December 24, visit the market in the morning or early afternoon and leave room to return to your accommodation before your evening plans. On December 25-26, do not schedule the main market before its 11am opening or leave your only visit until after 6pm.
For a December 27-January 1 trip, the main market remains within its published season. If you arrive after January 1, choose activities with their own later dates rather than expecting these stalls to continue.
Plan a short Old Town market route
Domplatz and Residenzplatz make a compact main outing. Start around the cathedral squares, browse the stalls, then take a warm break before deciding whether to add Mozartplatz or another area. A slower afternoon is more useful than a route that spends the whole evening moving between markets.
Use a named meeting point outside a busy stall lane if your group separates. Agree on it before anyone leaves to shop; a live location pin can still be confusing when people approach the same square from different sides.
| Part of your day | Suggested plan | Keep flexible |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Leave luggage at your accommodation, then head toward the Old Town | Delays, check-in and a meal |
| First outing | Domplatz and Residenzplatz | Time to browse rather than just photograph the square |
| Evening | One dated choir or brass-music performance, if it fits | Dinner and your return service |
| Another outing | Mirabellplatz, or a separately planned Hellbrunn visit | Weather, walking pace and the correct opening day |
The programme lists traditional tower brass music on November 21 and 26 at 6:30pm, among other dates. Choose a specific listing rather than assuming the same performance runs every night. Cathedral concerts, guided visits and other indoor events may have separate admission conditions.
Families can use the Austria with kids guide for the wider trip. Keep the Christmas market as one outing within that itinerary, with time away from standing outdoors.
Mirabellplatz, Hellbrunn and the rink are different visits
Mirabellplatz: useful near the station, with its own closing date
The Mirabellplatz market's own information gives a November 19-December 31, 2026 season. Its ordinary hours are 10am-8pm Sunday-Thursday and 10am-9pm Friday-Saturday. December 24 closes at 3pm; December 25-26 runs 11am-6pm; December 27-31 has a listed 10am-7pm schedule, with food and drink stalls trading later on New Year's Eve.
It can be a convenient first or last market stop if you are using Salzburg Hauptbahnhof. The organizer describes a roughly 10-15-minute walk from the station, with trolleybus stops at Mirabellplatz. Allow more time with luggage or if you need a slower route.
Do not use the main Christkindlmarkt's January 1 finish as Mirabellplatz's closing date. They are separately organized markets.
Hellbrunn: plan the day before making the journey
Hellbrunner Adventzauber runs November 19-December 24. It normally closes on Mondays, with December 21 the stated exception. Tuesday-Friday hours are 1pm-8pm; weekends and public holidays start at 10am. Christmas Eve is 10am-2pm.
It is a separate outing, not the next square in an Old Town walk. Check your outward and return connections before leaving. In particular, a Monday city break or a post-Christmas arrival does not automatically include a Hellbrunn market visit.
Its admission page lists an EUR 8 charge before 7pm on its ordinary operating days, including a hot-drink voucher. Check the organizer for child eligibility and holiday exceptions rather than applying the main market's free entry to Hellbrunn.
Mozartplatz: skating starts earlier and finishes later
The organizer's Eiszauber information gives a November 12, 2026-January 31, 2027 rink season. That does not mean the Christmas market opens on November 12 or stays open through January.
Skating has separate charges, equipment hire and weather conditions. Families and individual visitors do not normally need advance reservations, but groups do. Check the current rink notice before making it the only activity in your day; poor weather can change operation at short notice.
For another Austrian city on the same trip, compare the separate dates in the Vienna Christmas markets guide rather than carrying Salzburg's schedule across to Vienna.
Getting from Salzburg Airport or the main station
Salzburg Airport's public transport page lists bus 2 between the airport and Hauptbahnhof, with a quoted ride of about 23 minutes. It also lists bus 10 toward the center at about 15 minutes, but its English and German pages differ on operating days. Use the dated operator timetable for bus 10, especially on Sundays and public holidays.
These are bus journey times, not landing-to-market estimates. Add baggage collection, waiting and the walk from your stop. Plan to your accommodation first if you have cases or arrive close to a holiday closing time.
From Hauptbahnhof, the market organizer's arrival guidance identifies trolleybus routes toward Rathaus, followed by a short walk. Choose the connection for your actual departure time. The Old Town market is not somewhere to drive up to a stall; use an appropriate public car park or park-and-ride and check the onward journey.
For your return, save the stop name as well as the departure time. A different boarding stop on the other side of the river can matter more than the straight-line distance on a map.
Cash, facilities and a manageable winter visit
The organizer's visitor FAQ says payment methods vary by stall, so carry some cash. Its information stand is number 95 by the large tree on Residenzplatz. Public toilets include locations on Kapitelplatz behind the cathedral arches and in Wiener-Philharmoniker-Gasse.
If you need an accessible route, use the organizer's detailed access information and ask about the particular approach you plan to take. Crowds, paving and the distance from your stop can still affect the visit; a general accessibility label is not a promise about every part of your journey.
Dress for time spent standing outside, not just for the walk from the bus. Bring layers and footwear suited to wet ground, and check the forecast close to departure. Snow is not guaranteed. With children, choose a warm break before they become tired and cold, rather than making one more stall the condition for going indoors.
Useful apps and mobile data around Salzburg
The official Salzburg Verkehr app provides journey planning, route information and ticket options. Save your accommodation and return stop as favorites. Download an offline street map and keep booking confirmations available before leaving Wi-Fi; a screenshot of a route is not a substitute for a valid transport ticket.
The market provides Wi-Fi, but the organizer does not guarantee uninterrupted availability. If your home allowance already covers Austria, that may be all you need. For an overseas visitor who needs bus updates and messages between the airport, hotel and markets, OpenSim Austria plans include fixed-data options of 1GB for seven days at USD 1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD 3.00. Both support eligible top-ups, so a short stay can start with a smaller allowance. The selected plan and checkout confirm current terms and totals.
Mobile data does not guarantee reception in a crowded square or open a market outside its hours. Keep an offline meeting point and return plan even when everyone has a connection.
Use the travel data calculator to estimate your allowance, check phone compatibility, and follow the installation timing guide before departure.
Sources and updates
The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt organizer publishes the main season, holiday hours, dated programme, facilities and rink information. Mirabellplatz and Hellbrunn publish their own schedules and conditions. Salzburg Tourism supplies the city listing; Salzburg Airport and Salzburg Verkehr provide arrival and journey-planning information.
This guide will be updated for material changes to market dates, holiday hours, performances, access or transport. Check the organizer's calendar before a visit built around one performance, and confirm Christmas meals directly with the restaurant.
