Nagoya Festival 2026: no parade, free entry and what to see
Nagoya Festival takes place on October 17-18, 2026, but the usual street parade is not being held. Hisaya-odori Park remains the main venue for performances, displays and cultural activities. Choose a park programme and, if it fits your day, a separately timed castle visit rather than waiting along an old parade route.
The organizer's 2026 announcement explains that the parade overlaps with the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Para Games torch relay and opening ceremony. The public selection of the Three Heroes and the Oasis 21 venue event are also not taking place. This is a changed festival format, not a cancellation of the entire weekend.

What replaces the Nagoya Festival parade?
The confirmed festival outline brings elements normally associated with the procession into the park. It includes warrior-troupe performances, flower-car and Three Heroes float displays, festival music, karakuri mechanical-puppet performances and cultural booths.
That makes a different kind of visit. You can choose a performance and move between nearby displays instead of keeping a roadside position for a procession. If the moving parade was your main reason for travelling, reconsider the trip before buying transport just for that experience.
The festival website still contains previous posters, photographs and leaflets. A file mentioning the parade may be correct for its own year and wrong for this visit. Use the 72nd edition, 2026, and read the date printed inside a downloaded document, not just the year in a search result.
Hisaya-odori Park: choose your performance first
The current park venue listings give 11am-8pm on Saturday, October 17, and 10am-8pm on Sunday, October 18. These are venue hours, not a promise that every activity runs continuously.
Angel Plaza is the useful starting point for the puppet and festival-music programme. Nagoya's official visitor listing publishes these karakuri performance windows:
| Day | Published puppet-performance windows |
|---|---|
| Saturday, October 17 | 12pm-1pm and 2pm-3pm |
| Sunday, October 18 | 11:30am-1pm and 2:30pm-3:30pm |
The same listing marks these performances as subject to rain cancellation. Check the latest notice before setting off. You can also look for the Three Heroes float display and evening Bon Odori, rather than assuming they are part of a travelling parade.
EDION Hisaya Plaza has the main stage programme. Sakae Hirobasu has booths, food trucks and stage activity. Pick one performance you most want to see, then leave time for browsing and a meal. Trying to watch every stage is likely to turn the visit into a series of hurried walks.
Admission to the festival is listed as free, but food and some games or cultural experiences cost extra. Check a booth's charge before joining its queue. Free entry does not mean a day with no spending.
Which attractions are free on the festival weekend?
Nagoya City's 2026 notice distinguishes the two days:
| Facility or offer | Confirmed date boundary |
|---|---|
| Nagoya Castle admission | Free on October 17 and 18 |
| Toyotomi Brothers Nagoya Nakamura drama museum | Free on October 17 and 18 |
| Twelve participating facilities, including Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens | Free opening on Sunday, October 18 |
Use the organizer's facility list for the full participating places and their conditions. Do not assume every Nagoya attraction is free on both days, or that an included facility also waives every extra charge. Check the particular exhibition, observatory, reservation or parking arrangement with the operator.
Can you enter Nagoya Castle's main keep?
No. The castle's official building guide says the main keep is currently closed because of ageing and earthquake-resistance concerns. The free-admission weekend does not reverse that closure.
Visit for the grounds, exterior and the areas the castle actually opens, not a promised climb inside the tower. If interior access to a castle keep is essential to your itinerary, check another attraction's current arrangements rather than booking this one on the strength of a photograph.
Is the Three Heroes puzzle activity suitable for your visit?
The city notice describes a free puzzle activity covering Nagoya Station, Fushimi and Sakae. Reception points include Nana-chan Street near Meitetsu Nagoya Station, the area near Fushimi Station Exit 5, and Angel Plaza. Registration closes at 6pm on both days.
Collect the booklet from a reception point and choose an area rather than assuming you must complete the entire route. The organizer's puzzle announcement has the activity details.
An English-language version is not confirmed on the pages checked. Ask about language before building your day around solving the booklet. A translation app may help with signs, but a word-based puzzle can be much harder than ordinary directions. Children who enjoy looking at the displays may not enjoy several hours of language-heavy clues.
Getting from Nagoya Station to the festival
Use the subway rather than assuming the festival park is beside the main railway station. JNTO's Sakae guide identifies Sakae as two stops from Nagoya on the Higashiyama Line.
The official visitor listing identifies Sakae, Hisaya-odori and Yabacho subway stations for the park area. Save the exact plaza you want to reach before choosing an exit. Hisaya-odori Park is long; arriving somewhere along it is not the same as reaching Angel Plaza or the correct stage.
For the castle, use the station named Nagoya Castle, rather than mistaking Nagoya Station for the castle stop. Follow the operator's current access instructions if you need an elevator or step-free approach. An underground station connection does not prove that every exit meets your access needs.
Nagoya's transport guide explains the municipal subway, city buses, IC cards and day passes. Compare a pass with the journeys you will actually make. An unlimited city bus-and-subway offer should not be treated as an all-rail pass for airport, intercity or other operators' trains.
Arriving through Chubu Centrair
Centrair's rail guidance says the fastest μ-SKY train reaches Nagoya in 28 minutes. Its first-class ticket, the μticket, is required in addition to the regular fare. That is train time, not the total time from landing to a festival performance.
Allow for immigration, bags, reaching the airport station and the onward city journey. If you are continuing to a hotel, drop your luggage first when possible. Do not plan a same-day arrival around a stage slot with no room for a flight delay.
A realistic Saturday or Sunday plan
Saturday: if you want to visit the castle, make it a separate morning stop after checking that day's opening arrangements. Have lunch, then reach Angel Plaza for a chosen afternoon programme. Browse the displays afterwards. Add an evening activity only if everyone still has the energy and your return journey works.
Sunday: choose either a participating free-admission attraction or the festival as your main daytime commitment. If you choose the park, the earlier opening gives you time to find the right area before a performance. Trying to combine the zoo, castle and several festival stages in one day means spending much of it in transit or queues.
For families, arrange a meeting point away from a busy stage entrance and keep a meal break in the plan. Carry some cash as a backup, without assuming every stall accepts the same payment method. Ask about dietary ingredients rather than judging a snack only by its appearance.
If you are choosing where Nagoya fits in a longer holiday, use our Japan with kids guide for broader planning. Keep regional day trips on another day instead of adding distant places to a festival afternoon.
Weather, maps and phone preparation
The organizer's current information says the park programme can proceed in rain but may be cancelled in severe weather, with individual events also subject to changes. Check the event notice and current forecast nearer the weekend. The absence of parade-related road restrictions does not mean there can be no other traffic changes during the Asian Para Games.
Save the current programme, the plaza names and your accommodation address offline. Keep an offline map for the city area and use your journey-planning app for live train checks. A translation app can help with notices; save essential language material ahead of time where the app supports it.
Bring a charged phone and a power bank. Agree how to regroup if someone loses data or their battery, rather than relying entirely on live location sharing in a crowd.
Mobile data for Nagoya and the rest of Japan
OpenSim is a practical option if you need a defined allowance for maps, train checks and family messages across your Japan route, rather than relying on finding venue Wi-Fi. The Japan catalogue checked October 12 lists a 5GB, 30-day plan at US$5.40 with eligible top-up support. Review the current selected package on the Japan product page.
This is a connectivity choice, not a way to reserve a viewing position or guarantee fast service in a crowd. If your existing plan already provides enough Japan roaming data, it may be simpler to use that. Check the allowance, validity and compatibility before buying another connection.
Estimate your needs with the travel data calculator, check whether your phone supports eSIM, and read the installation timing guide. Keep tickets, directions and the programme available offline whichever plan you use.
Nagoya Festival programme sources and changes
Festival, city, tourism, castle and transport details were checked against the linked official pages on October 12, 2026. Recheck the 2026 programme before October 17 and again for weather changes on your chosen day. After October 18, treat this edition as past coverage rather than applying its parade, free-admission or performance arrangements to a later year.
