Stone arcade and keep inside Chateau de Vincennes in January 2018, before the light festival

Nuits de Lumiere runs at Chateau de Vincennes from October 15 to November 8, 2026, on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. It is a ticketed light-art walk near Paris, lasting about 90 minutes. Choose a dated entry slot: the first admission moves from 19:30 to 18:30 on October 25.

The organizer's practical information gives the operating nights and entrance details. The date range does not mean the festival opens every night. A Monday evening in Vincennes will not give you the same visit as a booked Saturday slot.

Which evening and entry time should you choose?

Visit datesOperating nightsPublished evening hours
October 15 to 24Thursday to Sunday19:30 to 23:00
October 25 to November 8Thursday to Sunday18:30 to 23:00

Admissions are spaced every 30 minutes. Last entry is 21:30, and the final mapping projection is at 22:30. The castle's event page confirms the change in opening time.

For a family, the earlier opening in the second part of the run may be easier to fit around bedtime. It is not a reason to expect an empty site. Choose the available slot that leaves your group enough time to walk, pause and get home without rushing.

For adults coming after work or another Paris visit, eat before the booked time or leave room in the plan for a food stop inside. Do not book the last entry simply because the closing time looks generous: entry, walking time and the last projection are different deadlines.

Family tickets: when does EUR48 save money?

The organizer lists EUR18 full price, EUR14 reduced, EUR12 for young visitors and students, and EUR48 for an eligible family group. Check the ticket conditions in the official FAQ: the family group is two adults with two or three children under 25, not any group of five friends. Everyone needs a ticket, including children under six using free admission.

These examples use the listed EUR18 adult and EUR12 youth prices:

Example groupSeparate listed ticketsFamily totalDifference
Two adults and children aged 10 and 14EUR60EUR48EUR12 less
Two adults and children aged 10, 14 and 17EUR72EUR48EUR24 less

Those are our calculations before any seller-specific charges, not a promise about a checkout total. Compare the same date and party on the booking screen. A per-person family price can look much lower than a group total while describing the same purchase.

Use the booking link on the castle's official event page. Check age rules and bring any required proof for a concession. Keep the confirmation and the individual tickets, rather than relying on a screenshot of the price page.

Three artworks to look for inside the castle

The route combines light installations with projections fitted to the architecture. These examples offer different reasons to stop rather than treating the evening as a series of photo backgrounds.

De d'Artagnan a Josephine Baker, by HAASKR, uses material from the Service historique de la Defense, which is based at the castle. Letters, maps and other archives feed a projection telling eight centuries of French history. Look for how documents become moving images on the building, rather than expecting a conventional guided tour.

Le Grand Mix, by Inook, takes a different approach: historical figures appear to sing popular songs. That change of tone is useful to know if your group would enjoy something playful alongside the historical material.

The Great Indecision Council, by Romain Tardy, is described by the organizer as a 25-metre light circle responding to live Google and Google News search language. Its subject is contemporary public attention, not simply the castle's past.

Leave time to watch a work develop. A quick photograph does not necessarily show what changes during its sequence. Equally, you do not have to give every installation identical attention; let the people in your group choose where to linger.

This is an evening art route, not a full castle tour

The official visitor FAQ says the keep's rooms and wall walk are not accessible during the event. Do not buy this ticket expecting the same interior visit as daytime admission. Exiting the route is final, so settle any plans outside before entering.

If seeing historic rooms is your main interest, compare the castle's ordinary daytime offer separately. If your reason for coming is projected art on the architecture, the evening route is the relevant booking. Combining both means checking two sets of hours and inclusions, not assuming one ticket covers the whole day.

Children, uneven ground and an autumn evening

The organizer recommends the route from age six and permits strollers. Free admission for younger children is not the same as a recommendation that every toddler will enjoy a late outdoor walk.

The local tourist office's event listing describes wheelchair access across the route but flags cobbles and uneven surfaces. Ask about your particular chair or assistance needs before booking. Plan footwear for the surface as well as the temperature.

The same listing says the event normally continues in bad weather, except in force majeure, and tickets are not exchangeable or refundable unless the organizer cancels. Check the conditions when purchasing; a rainy forecast does not automatically create a refund right.

Bring a suitable layer and check the evening forecast before leaving. If someone in the group is already tired after a long sightseeing day, choose a shorter daytime plan rather than relying on enthusiasm to carry them through another late activity.

Bags, food and what to save on your phone

The tourist office lists free storage near ticketing, a 40 x 20 x 50 cm maximum luggage size, light food on site, and a ban on bringing your own food and drink. Leave large travel bags at your accommodation rather than treating the event as a stop on the way to the airport.

The organizer accepts printed or digital tickets. Download them before travelling, check that each person is covered, and keep enough battery for the return journey. With a group, agree a meeting point before people stop at different works.

Decide whether to eat outside first or use the on-site food area. Leaving for a restaurant and returning later is not part of a single visit. If someone has a dietary requirement, check food arrangements before relying on an event foodcourt.

Getting there from Paris and planning the return

The entrance is Tour du Village on avenue de Paris. The organizer lists Metro line 1 to Chateau de Vincennes and RER A to Vincennes. These are different stations; check the walk from the one you choose to the actual event entrance.

Use the official Ile-de-France Mobilites app for a route from your accommodation, current departures and disruption alerts. It also supports transport-ticket purchases on compatible phones. Set up the relevant ticket function before the evening rather than discovering a device issue at a gate.

Plan the trip home as well as the outbound journey. Enter your intended departure time in the planner and allow for walking out of the event. A route that works when you arrive may not be the most useful one after a late finish.

You do not need to move hotels solely for this visit if your existing base has a workable route. Compare the whole itinerary before trading a central Paris stay for proximity to one evening event.

Two realistic ways to fit it into a Paris trip

A family evening after October 25: keep the afternoon light, eat before arrival if that suits your group, and select an available early slot. Leave the rest of the evening open for the route and return. Avoid adding another timed attraction immediately afterwards.

An adults' evening after a Paris day: finish the day's last museum or appointment with enough time for a meal and the journey east. Choose the entry slot only after checking that connection. Save the ticket before departure, then decide inside which installations deserve more time.

For a wider family holiday, our France with kids guide covers broader itinerary choices. This event is one possible evening, not a substitute for deciding how many places your group can comfortably visit in a day.

Mobile data for tickets and the journey home

Offline tickets and a saved address reduce the tasks that depend on a connection. Live route changes and group messages still need data. OpenSim's France plans give a separate travel allowance; on October 16, the public catalog listed France 5GB for 30 days at USD5.40, with top-up support for that particular plan.

A fixed allowance can make the data budget clearer than an unknown home-network roaming charge. If your current plan already includes enough France data, another plan may be unnecessary. Mobile data does not guarantee admission, transport availability or reception in a crowd.

Use the travel data calculator to estimate your wider trip, and check when to install before travel. Keep the ticket available offline even after setting up a data plan.

Details were checked October 16, 2026, against the linked organizer, castle, tourism and transport pages. Recheck the selected date and seller's conditions before paying. This guide will be updated for material changes to the 2026 operating nights, prices, entry, programme, access or transport advice.
