OpenSim is joining David Martín's RideToAfrica expedition as his connectivity partner. On 12 October 2026, he plans to leave Humanes de Madrid on a 2005 BMW F650GS and ride along Africa's western side toward Cape Town.
More than 20,000 kilometres lie ahead. David is riding alone, with roughly three and a half months to reach South Africa and a plan to share what happens along the way: the roads, the border crossings, the good days and the difficult ones.

The goal
Cape Town
David Martín and his BMW F650GS, before departure.
David is 37, from Ávila and based in Madrid. His earlier solo motorcycle trips took him through the Alps, Scotland, Turkey, Morocco and up to the North Cape. This time, the route keeps going south.
His BMW F650GS dates from 2005. David chose it for its relatively simple electronics and the way it handles. There will be long stretches of riding, rain, mud, dust, maintenance and decisions about where to sleep or cross the next border. He wants to document the journey each day, or at least try when the road allows it.

The ride heads from Spain to Morocco, down through West Africa and along the central coast, then through Angola and Namibia toward South Africa. David's map shows Gabon, the Republic of the Congo and DR Congo in the central section; his written list simply says "Congo". Exact crossings may change on the road.
Search for a destination below, then choose your data allowance and validity on its product page. The Africa regional eSIM covers several stops. Country plans give you another option for individual destinations.
No OpenSim plan is currently listed for Mauritania, Togo, Namibia. Arrange connectivity separately for those stops.
Check the selected package's country list before each border. No single plan shown here covers the whole expedition, and the Africa regional plan does not include every route country.
Connected on the road
A connection can help David check a route, message a host, translate a conversation or let people at home know he has stopped for the night. It also gives him a way to upload photographs and send shorter updates between longer travel videos.
That is where OpenSim joins the ride. David plans to show how he uses mobile data during real travel days and border crossings, with the local conditions he encounters. An eSIM uses local networks, so remote tracks can still be out of signal. Offline maps and a separate emergency communication plan remain part of preparing for a ride like this.
