Kyushu travel discount 2026: eligibility and booking rules
Kyushu's recovery travel discounts began applying to eligible overnight stays on October 1, 2026, but you need a qualifying booking and an available subsidy allocation. A room being available does not mean its discounted allocation is available. Before changing an autumn trip, check the prefecture, seller, stay dates and final price.
The Japan Tourism Agency describes support for tourism following the 2026 Kumamoto earthquake. The national framework discounts eligible travel by 50%, or 60% in Kumamoto and Kagoshima, subject to caps. However, Kagoshima's national scheme was still being arranged when we checked on October 5. Its separate local offer has different dates.

Which Kyushu dates and booking channels qualify?
The Kyushu Tourism Organization's programme hub separates booking channels. These are published eligibility windows, not a promise of rooms or discount stock:
| Prefecture | Published stay window | Booking detail to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fukuoka | October 1 to December 15 | Selected bookings from September 24; allocation can end early |
| Saga | October 1 to December 25 | Agency sales began October 2; direct hotel sales planned for October 13 at 13:00 Japan time |
| Nagasaki | October 1 to December 25 for some channels | Some online-booking channels have a November 30 stay cutoff |
| Kumamoto | October 1 to December 25 | Selected sales began September 15 |
| Oita | Depends on channel | Online bookings: October 1; agencies: October 9; direct hotels: October 16, through December 25 |
| Miyazaki | October 1 to December 25 | Online sales began September 25; selected direct and agency sales from September 28 |
| Kagoshima | National dates unconfirmed | Separate local scheme covers September 14 to October 13 |
For Oita, choosing a channel changes more than the sale date. The official Oita portal gives direct-hotel stays a start date of October 16. Do not assume an October 10 stay qualifies through every seller because an online offer starts earlier.
The Saga portal includes inbound visitors, but its listed online-booking allocations were already marked exhausted when checked. Its later direct-hotel launch is planned, not guaranteed inventory. Recheck before rearranging a trip around it.
Is the discount cap per night or per trip?
The national caps are per traveler, per trip, not a nightly allowance:
| Eligible product | Maximum reduction per person per trip |
|---|---|
| Accommodation only, or a transport-inclusive one-night package | JPY20,000 |
| Transport-inclusive package with two or more nights | JPY30,000 |
| Eligible touring product with stays in two or more prefectures | JPY35,000 |
Two nights booked as accommodation alone do not automatically earn the higher transport-package cap. Likewise, independently buying a train ticket and two hotel stays does not automatically turn them into an eligible touring product. Ask the seller which supported product you are buying.
Here is a calculation example, not a hotel quote: an eligible accommodation-only booking costing JPY60,000 per person at a 50% rate would hit the JPY20,000 cap. The supported portion would therefore cost JPY40,000, before excluded charges. It would not become JPY30,000 simply because the headline says half price.
Compare the same room, meals, dates and cancellation terms. A higher-priced eligible package can still cost more than a suitable undiscounted room.
Can overseas visitors use the hotel discounts?
Yes, at least some prefectures explicitly include visitors from abroad. Saga confirms inbound eligibility, and Fukuoka's official FAQ includes overseas travelers. That does not make every hotel, booking website or rate eligible.
Fukuoka excludes bookings made before its September 24 sales start. Its cap is per trip rather than per night, accommodation and bathing taxes are generally outside the supported amount, and cancellation fees are not subsidized. Business trips and day-use stays are excluded.
Read your chosen prefecture's instructions and ask the seller about required identification and forms. Carry the documents specified for your booking. A passport proving who you are does not establish that your room rate has an attached subsidy.
For families, compare the actual priced occupants rather than multiplying the maximum cap by everyone in the room. Children's eligibility and the price allocated to them need to match the seller's booking.
Miyazaki: secure the STAYNAVI coupon as well as the room
For eligible direct bookings, the Miyazaki programme requires a separate STAYNAVI discount coupon. Reserving through the hotel does not finish the subsidy process. Coupon issuance can become unavailable even after you have secured a room.
Follow the programme's order of steps, check that the guest name matches, and keep the required coupon ready for check-in. The portal allows the coupon to be displayed on a phone or brought with you. Ask the property what it needs before arriving.
Bookings made before the relevant sales start are excluded. Avoid making a speculative nonrefundable reservation and assuming a coupon will follow. Get the property's confirmation of the process and understand your cancellation exposure first.
Check the subsidy before canceling an existing booking
Start with the reservation you already hold. Record its refund deadline and cancellation charge, then compare a confirmed eligible replacement.
Net benefit = reduction on the replacement - its extra cost - cancellation charges - extra travel costs.
If canceling costs JPY8,000 and the replacement saves JPY10,000, the remaining benefit is only JPY2,000 before other differences. An extra transfer or a less useful location can outweigh that saving. These figures illustrate the comparison; they are not quoted fees.
Early allocation exhaustion is already visible in ICONIA's participating-hotel list, which marks several selected properties closed for the campaign. That does not mean all hotel rooms are sold out, or that every operator in the prefecture has stopped selling supported stays.
Ask for a final price showing the actual reduction. Check what happens if your dates change or a coupon cannot be issued. Do not cancel a useful confirmed booking merely because another page advertises a maximum percentage.
Keep Kagoshima's local offer and train campaign separate
Kagoshima's local accommodation scheme covers September 14 to October 13, with a 60% reduction capped at JPY20,000 per traveler per trip. It is separate from the national scheme still being arranged. An October 20 hotel stay does not qualify for this local window.
The Kagoshima free Shinkansen campaign is another offer with its own market, hotel and transport conditions. Do not assume the benefits can be combined. Ask both sellers before counting two discounts in your budget.
Plan the route before chasing a discounted hotel
Keep accommodation near the journeys and activities you intended to take. Moving a base solely for a subsidy can add luggage handling, transport costs and lost sightseeing time. A cheaper room across the region is not a like-for-like replacement.
Our Kyushu Shinkansen reopening guide covers the rail recovery separately. Check JR Kyushu's current operating notices for your actual route; older forum discussions about summer closures are not an October timetable. A tourism promotion does not certify every local road or service as open.
For a family itinerary, use Japan with kids rather than adding overnight stops just to reach a higher discount cap. Leave room for meals and transfers, and confirm luggage arrangements directly with each hotel.
Save the property address, confirmation and seller contact before leaving Wi-Fi. A translation app can help read programme instructions, but confirm unclear eligibility with the operator rather than treating an automatic translation as approval.
Mobile data for booking checks and hotel arrivals
The subsidy reduces eligible travel costs; it does not supply mobile data. OpenSim serves the separate need to open booking confirmations, check train changes and message a hotel while moving between cities.
Our Japan plans currently include 10GB for 30 days at USD9.40, with top-up eligibility, checked October 5. A defined allowance can suit a multi-stop trip better than relying solely on hotel Wi-Fi. It does not secure a subsidy, replace required identification or guarantee reception everywhere.
Compare that price with roaming already included in your existing plan. Check phone compatibility, installation timing and the travel data calculator before buying. Our Japan eSIM guide compares providers and plan choices.
Sources and updates
Programme rules, booking dates and the public product price were checked October 5, 2026 against the linked official national and prefecture pages, tourism-board hub and participating operator. Availability changes as sellers use their allocations.
We will update this guide when Saga's planned direct launch, Oita's channel dates, Kagoshima's national programme or the booking and coupon rules change. Before paying, use the selected seller's current terms and final discounted total.
