Ryanair Sicily winter 2026: 17 routes by airport

Ryanair has listed 17 routes in its Sicily winter 2026 announcement: nine from Catania, six from Palermo and two from Trapani-Marsala. Most join the winter programme from late October, but Dublin and Wroclaw from Catania are marked for March 2027.

The airline's release does not give a start date or weekly frequency for every route. Treat the list as an announcement, then confirm both directions in the live booking calendar before arranging accommodation or an onward journey.

The practical answer: Catania has the largest group of additions, Palermo has six and Trapani-Marsala gains two domestic links. Dublin and Wroclaw from Catania are March 2027 routes, not October launches. Search the exact airport pair and return date because the announcement does not publish a complete timetable.

The 17 routes, sorted by Sicily airport

Ryanair's October 21 announcement describes an 88-route Sicily winter programme supported by 11 based aircraft. The passenger-useful part is the airport breakdown:

Sicily airportRoutes named in the announcementTiming stated by Ryanair
Catania, CTAAlicante, Dublin, Gdansk, Memmingen, Porto, Rimini, Valencia, Warsaw and WroclawDublin and Wroclaw from March 2027. No route-level date is stated for the other seven.
Palermo, PMODublin, Gdansk, Parma, Prague, Sofia and TiranaNo route-level dates or frequencies stated in the release.
Trapani-Marsala, TPSMilan Malpensa and VeronaNo route-level dates or frequencies stated in the release.

Ryanair calls all 17 routes new. That label describes the airline's winter programme and should not be read as proof that every city pair has never operated before. The booking calendar, issued itinerary and airport code are the useful sources for an individual trip.

What is already visible in booking evidence

Selected live Ryanair pages checked on October 21 showed winter inventory for Catania to Alicante, Palermo to Tirana and Trapani to Milan Malpensa. Ryanair's separate Alicante winter announcement lists Catania at five flights per week.

Those examples confirm that parts of the programme are on sale. They do not establish one common start date or frequency for all 17 routes. Ryanair can also change operating days, times and seasonal end dates after an announcement.

Do not use a search result's sample fare as a budget. Check the final price after the bag, seat and priority options needed by each traveler have been selected.

Choose the airport for the itinerary, not the headline

Catania, Palermo and Trapani serve different parts of Sicily. A cheaper flight can become the slower choice when it requires crossing the island before an early departure.

  • Catania, code CTA, is the practical gateway for Catania, Mount Etna trips, Taormina and much of eastern Sicily.
  • Palermo, code PMO, works for Palermo and the northwestern coast. The airport's official guidance says its railway station is beneath the terminal and trains operate daily.
  • Trapani-Marsala, code TPS, is useful for Trapani, Marsala, the Egadi Islands and western itineraries. The airport publishes bus and shuttle links, but travelers should check the operating day and arrival time.

Public traveler questions repeatedly ask whether it is sensible to stay in Palermo and fly from Catania, or travel from Trapani to an early Catania departure. It can be done, but a same-day cross-island transfer creates more failure points. For an early flight, staying near the departure side of the island the night before is usually the calmer plan.

Airport names need a second look

The Trapani routes include Milan Malpensa, code MXP. Ryanair also serves Milan Bergamo from Trapani, so searching only for β€œMilan” can put the wrong airport into a ground-transport plan.

The Sicily announcement says Warsaw without naming an airport. Ryanair sells Warsaw-area services under more than one airport name elsewhere in its network. Use the airport code on the live result and issued itinerary instead of inferring it from the city label.

The same check matters for Dublin and Wroclaw. They carry an asterisk in the announcement because their Catania service is due from March 2027. A winter trip before then needs another route or date.

Separate tickets need recovery room

The 17 links create useful one-way and open-jaw options, but a self-built connection remains separate unless the booking explicitly says otherwise. Ryanair does not promise to protect an onward flight bought under another reservation.

Leave enough time to collect a checked bag, cross any passport control, reach the next check-in or bag-drop point and pass security again. An overnight stop is safer than a short same-day connection when the first flight has only a few weekly alternatives.

If a flight is cancelled or diverted, use the airline's official disruption flow before choosing refund or rerouting. Do not assume a social-media report about transport during a past Etna event applies to a new disruption.

Bags and check-in are separate decisions

Ryanair's current bag policy includes one small personal bag with every fare, with a published maximum of 40 by 30 by 20 cm. A larger cabin bag or checked bag depends on the purchased option.

Online check-in does not drop a checked bag. From November 10, 2026, Ryanair says airport check-in and bag drop close 60 minutes before scheduled departure. That is a cutoff, not a sensible arrival target. Allow time for the terminal, queues, security and the walk to the gate.

Save the boarding pass and booking reference offline. Mobile data is helpful for live changes and ground transport, but it cannot reopen a closed bag-drop desk or replace a required travel document.

Build a disruption plan for Catania

Mount Etna activity can affect Catania operations through ash restrictions, diversions or temporary capacity limits. It does not make every Catania flight unreliable, and it does not justify predicting a disruption for a particular date.

The useful preparation is simpler:

  1. Check the airline and airport status before leaving for CTA.
  2. Keep the booking contact details current and notifications enabled.
  3. Know whether the airline has changed the operating airport before starting an overland trip.
  4. Keep essential medication, documents and a charger in the personal bag.
  5. Avoid a tight separate onward ticket after arrival.

Palermo and Trapani are not automatic substitutes for Catania. A diversion instruction can include airline-arranged transport, while independently changing airport can affect the options attached to the original booking.

Mobile data for a Sicily winter trip

For a trip based on the island, compare the Italy OpenSim eSIM. The live Italy catalog had six packages when checked on October 21, with the lowest listed price at $1.14. Use the current product card at checkout because price, allowance and availability can change.

The Europe eSIM covers Italy and the named EU route countries in this programme, including Spain, Ireland, Poland, Germany, Portugal, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. Albania is not in that regional plan's returned country list, so a Palermo-Tirana trip needs the Albania eSIM or another live package that explicitly includes both countries.

Check the selected package's data allowance, validity, speed policy, hotspot terms and top-up eligibility. Not every package should be assumed reloadable. An OpenSim plan uses supported ground networks and does not provide inflight connectivity.

Ten questions about Ryanair's Sicily winter routes

Which airport has the most announced routes?

Catania has nine, Palermo has six and Trapani-Marsala has two. The count describes the 17 routes named in Ryanair's winter announcement, not every service available from each airport.

Do all 17 routes begin in October 2026?

No. Ryanair marks Catania-Dublin and Catania-Wroclaw as starting in March 2027. Its Sicily release does not state a route-level date for each of the other 15.

Are all 17 routes bookable now?

Selected routes were visible in Ryanair's booking pages when checked, but the release is not a live inventory list. Search the exact outbound and return dates before committing to another purchase.

Which Sicily airport should I choose?

Choose by the first or final overnight stop. Catania suits eastern Sicily, Palermo suits the northwest and Trapani suits much of the west. Then compare the full ground journey, not only the airfare.

Is Trapani to Catania practical before an early flight?

It is a long cross-island transfer and public services vary by day. For a very early CTA departure, travel across the island earlier and stay near Catania rather than relying on an overnight or first-morning connection.

Does the Trapani to Milan route use Malpensa?

Yes. The newly named Trapani route is Milan Malpensa, code MXP. Do not confuse it with Ryanair's separate Trapani-Bergamo service.

Which Warsaw airport will the Catania route use?

The announcement says Warsaw but does not specify an airport code. Confirm the code shown in the live booking and itinerary before arranging transport.

What bag comes with the basic Ryanair fare?

Ryanair currently includes one small personal bag up to 40 by 30 by 20 cm. Larger cabin and checked bags depend on the option bought for that booking.

What should I do if a Catania flight is diverted?

Read the airline's message and use its disruption process first. Confirm the new operating airport and any arranged ground transfer before buying independent transport.

Can one OpenSim Europe plan cover every route?

No. The current Europe plan covers Italy and the EU countries named here, but not Albania. Palermo-Tirana needs an Albania plan or another package whose live country list includes both markets.

Before booking

  • Confirm CTA, PMO or TPS for the Sicily airport.
  • Treat Dublin and Wroclaw from Catania as March 2027 additions.
  • Search the complete return trip and note the operating days.
  • Verify MXP for the new Trapani-Milan route.
  • Check the live airport code for Catania-Warsaw.
  • Price the fare again with the required bags and seats.
  • Add recovery time around separate tickets.
  • Save the itinerary, boarding pass and airport transport details offline.
  • Recheck the airline and airport on the travel day.
  • Match the eSIM country list to every country in the trip.

Evidence and route review trigger

Ryanair's English and Italian releases support the 88-route programme, 17-route list, airport split, based-aircraft count and March 2027 note. Ryanair's Alicante release and selected live route pages provide limited booking corroboration. Official Catania, Palermo and Trapani airport pages support the airport and transport planning, while Ryanair help pages support bag and check-in guidance.

Public discussions were used to identify questions about choosing among Sicily's airports, cross-island transfers, early flights, checked bags, schedule visibility and volcanic diversions. They were not used as evidence for schedules, airline policy or passenger rights.

OpenSim will review this guide when the winter season begins, when the March 2027 routes approach launch, or if Ryanair materially changes an airport, date, frequency, baggage rule or check-in instruction.

*Airline, airport, search, public-question, Google policy and OpenSim catalog sources were reviewed on October 21, 2026.*
