United has expanded its Economy meal preorder to more flights across North America and the Caribbean. From October 19, 2026, the distance test is over 900 miles, down from over 1,190 miles.

The change adds about 420 flights a day and gives up to 65,000 more passengers daily access to the feature, according to United. Examples include Chicago to Houston, Denver to San Francisco and Houston to Washington Dulles.

The practical answer: open the trip in the United app or the Trips section of united.com between five days and 24 hours before departure. If eligible food appears, choose it before the window closes and save the confirmation. A route over 900 miles can qualify, but distance alone does not promise a menu or that the selected item will be served.

This guide was checked on October 21, 2026, two days after the expansion began.

What changed on October 19

United's official announcement sets out four useful rules:

QuestionUnited's published answer
CabinUnited Economy
Flight lengthOver 900 miles, reduced from over 1,190 miles
GeographyFlights across North America and the Caribbean
Ordering periodFrom five days until 24 hours before departure
Where to orderUnited app or the Trips section of united.com
What can appearFresh Bistro on Board food and other eligible retail items

The phrase "over 900 miles" matters. United did not say 900 miles or more, and it did not publish a complete route list. A map estimate is not an eligibility check. The menu inside the actual reservation is the better test.

How to preorder in the app or on the website

The ordering path is tied to the booking:

  1. Open the reservation in the United app, or sign in and open Trips on united.com.
  2. Look for the food preorder option once the flight is inside the five-day window.
  3. Review the items shown for that flight and traveler.
  4. Complete the selection before the 24-hour cutoff.
  5. Save the confirmation and any receipt where it can be opened offline.

United says app users receive a notification when preordering opens. Do not make the notification the only plan. Phone settings, a stale app session or a late itinerary change can leave little time to act. Put a calendar reminder at five days before departure and check the reservation directly.

If no food option appears, confirm that the flight is United-operated, within the published region, over 900 miles and currently inside the order window. The announcement does not say that every flight meeting those broad conditions carries every item.

The menu changes, and selection is flight-specific

United says fresh sandwiches, burgers, pasta and breakfast choices rotate monthly. At launch, it named a pork mojo burrito, a Chicago patty melt, a hot honey chicken and waffle sandwich and a cinnamon apple waffle. Signature snackboxes and snacks can also appear among eligible retail items.

Those examples are not a permanent menu. The choice can depend on departure time, catering and the flight shown in the reservation. Read the item description and price before ordering instead of choosing from an old menu screenshot.

The October announcement does not publish an allergen table, a guaranteed vegan choice or a process for handling a severe food allergy. If a dietary need is safety-critical, contact United for the specific flight and carry suitable food where airport and security rules allow. A preorder is not the same as a medically controlled special meal.

A preorder improves choice, not certainty

United adds a footnote to its announcement: preordered meals may be unavailable in some circumstances. Catering errors, an aircraft swap, a disruption or a changed flight can still separate a traveler from the selected item.

Keep the confirmation, but speak with the crew if the item is not offered. Do not treat the preorder screen as proof that a meal is physically onboard. For a long travel day, pack an appropriate backup snack or buy food in the terminal when practical.

United's current refund form accepts requests for food and drinks and says a customer may qualify when a paid service was not received. Eligibility is decided from the actual purchase and trip. Keep the receipt and submit the food item rather than assuming a refund happens automatically.

Flight changes can close the useful window

The 24-hour cutoff creates a clear limit for late bookings, same-day changes, standby travel and disrupted connections. If a replacement flight leaves within 24 hours, there may be no opportunity to place a new preorder.

United's announcement does not promise that a selection moves to another flight. After any schedule or aircraft change, open the new segment and check its food status. If the old charge remains but the service does not, retain both itineraries and the receipt for a refund request.

This feature is for a specific eligible flight, not the whole journey. On a connection, check each United segment separately. A long total itinerary does not make a short individual leg eligible.

Economy preorder is separate from premium-cabin meals

The October 19 change concerns fresh-food preorder in United Economy. It does not rewrite the meal-selection rules for United First, Polaris or Premium Plus, and it does not promise that a premium-cabin passenger can order from the Economy Bistro on Board menu.

Use the choices displayed for the booked cabin and flight. If an upgrade, downgrade or aircraft change alters the cabin after a selection, recheck the reservation rather than assuming the original order remains attached.

Data for managing the preorder before departure

An OpenSim United States eSIM can support the United app, email and browser on a US trip. An OpenSim North America eSIM may suit an itinerary that also includes supported parts of Canada or Mexico. Check the exact destinations and network details on the live card before buying.

Install on reliable Wi-Fi and read the selected package's allowance, validity, activation, hotspot, reduced-speed and top-up terms. Not every package is reloadable.

An eSIM provides mobile data on supported ground networks. It does not make a flight eligible for food, carry the preorder to a replacement flight or provide onboard Wi-Fi. Save the meal confirmation before boarding in case connectivity is poor.

Ten questions about United's Economy meal preorder

Which United flights now qualify for Economy meal preorder?

United says the expanded program covers Economy customers on flights over 900 miles across North America and the Caribbean. The airline did not publish a complete route list, so use the food option in the actual reservation as the final eligibility check.

Does a flight exactly 900 miles qualify?

The announcement says over 900 miles, not 900 miles or more. Do not rely on a rounded public distance. Check the trip in United's app or website during the order window.

When does United food preorder open and close?

It opens five days before departure and closes 24 hours before departure. United says its app sends a notification when ordering opens, but checking the reservation directly is safer than relying only on an alert.

Where is the food preorder option?

Use the United app or open the Trips section on united.com. The option is linked to an eligible reservation and traveler rather than a public menu that can be ordered without a booking.

What food can I preorder in United Economy?

United lists rotating fresh Bistro on Board choices such as sandwiches, burgers, pasta and breakfast items, plus eligible retail food. The exact menu and price shown for the flight control; launch examples are not permanent promises.

Is the selected meal guaranteed to be onboard?

No. United explicitly warns that preordered meals may not be available in some circumstances. Keep the confirmation and a backup snack, especially when food is important to the travel day.

What happens to a preorder after a flight change?

United's announcement does not promise an automatic transfer. Open the replacement segment and check. A new flight inside 24 hours may already be beyond the published ordering cutoff.

Can I get a refund if I paid but did not receive the food?

United's refund form includes food and drinks and says an unreceived paid service may qualify. Save the receipt and trip details, then submit the specific purchase for review.

Are vegan, allergy-safe or special meals guaranteed?

The expansion announcement does not guarantee those options or publish an allergen process. Review the live description, contact United for the flight when needed and carry suitable food if the dietary requirement is critical.

Does an OpenSim eSIM work as onboard Wi-Fi?

No. It provides mobile data on supported terrestrial networks before departure and after landing. It can help open the app and save the confirmation, but it does not replace the aircraft's Wi-Fi service.

Before the order window closes

  • Confirm that the individual United flight is over 900 miles and shows the food option.
  • Set a reminder for five days before departure.
  • Order in the app or the Trips section of united.com before the 24-hour cutoff.
  • Read the current description and price, not an old menu.
  • Save the confirmation and receipt offline.
  • Recheck after an aircraft, schedule, cabin or flight change.
  • Carry a practical backup when a meal is important.
  • Keep the receipt if a paid item is not delivered.

Checks after United changes the program

United's October 19 release supports the threshold, geographic scope, daily flight and passenger estimates, order window, channels, example routes, rotating menu and availability warning. United's refund form supports the route for requesting review of an unreceived food or drink purchase.

Public traveler discussions were used to identify questions about missing menu options, the 24-hour cutoff, flight changes, onboard availability, payment, refunds, food quality and the difference between Economy and premium-cabin selection. They were not used as proof of United policy.

We will update this page if United changes the distance threshold, region, order window, menu access, payment handling, refund route or flight-change behavior.
